Chapter 413 We Are Getting Engaged
Dione was getting on in years, and Samuel was her only child. When she heard the news, she fainted, her vision going black. Dane quickly caught her, pinching her philtrum and pulling out the blood pressure medication he always carried. It took a lot of effort to wake her up.
"Samuel, my son..."
Dione, unable to accept such devastating news, turned to lean on Dane's shoulder, suppressing her sobs.
Seeing the couple like this, Juniper felt a pang of guilt. Margaret pressed her lips together, supporting Juniper's arm and guiding her to sit down nearby, her eyes filled with worry as she looked towards the operating room.
Before long, Samuel was wheeled out and taken to the ICU. His face was deathly pale, and he had an oxygen mask on.
Juniper wanted to follow, but Dione stopped her in her tracks.
Right now, neither of them wanted to see Juniper, the person they blamed for distracting Samuel and causing the accident.
Juniper's eyes were red, and she was at a loss. She couldn't leave Samuel, but she didn't know what to do.
Margaret stepped forward, gently patting Juniper's back. "Don't be too upset. I'll go check on him in a bit. Mr. and Mrs. Hall are just having a hard time accepting this right now."
Juniper turned and leaned on Margaret's shoulder, crying out loud. "Margaret, I didn't mean for this to happen. I just couldn't handle the news about the baby. I didn't know what to do. If Samuel doesn't wake up, I... I..."
"He will, he will. You have to believe that he'll be okay," Margaret reassured her, patting her back gently.
After nearly an hour, Margaret and Juniper went to Samuel's room. Margaret managed to persuade Dane and Dione to leave and then asked a nurse for some acupuncture needles. After sterilizing them, she carefully inserted the needles into Samuel's body.
Samuel, who had been unconscious since the surgery, finally showed some signs of response after twenty minutes of acupuncture.
Juniper sat by the bedside, watching Samuel anxiously. She was terrified that he wouldn't make it, as if he were her last hope.
When she saw Samuel's left index finger twitch, Margaret finally breathed a sigh of relief and smiled at Juniper. "Samuel still has some willpower left. Although he's seriously injured, his will to live seems strong. I was stimulating his pain response and testing his consciousness. If he can make it through tonight, he should be okay. He can probably hear us now."
Margaret placed a hand on Juniper's shoulder and spoke softly, "I think the person Samuel wants to see most right now is you. Encourage him; it might help him wake up faster."
Juniper, with tears in her eyes, nodded. After Margaret left, she took Samuel's hand in hers, holding it tightly. Her voice was hoarse as she spoke, "Samuel, please wake up."
"I've always known you liked me. You're a good person, but I've always had feelings for Alden, and after what happened between us, I didn't know how to accept your feelings. I never expected you to get into an accident. I'm sorry."
"If you wake up, I'll be with you. I can marry you. Please wake up."
Juniper stayed by Samuel's side all night, unable to bring herself to leave.
Time flew by, and soon it was the 18th, the day of Angel and William's engagement party.
Lately, William had been coming back more frequently, sometimes even joking and chatting with Angel. Angel was completely absorbed in the fantasy of becoming William's wife, oblivious to any underlying issues.
"William, do you think there will be a lot of people at our engagement party?"
Angel nestled against William's shoulder, her voice filled with genuine happiness, unlike her usual affected tone.
She had wanted to marry William for years, and now that her only rival, Margaret, was out of the picture, she believed she would be the only one by William's side.
William gently stroked Angel's hair, looking down at her with a smile. "Isn't that a given? Our engagement party will be the most lively event. You've been handling everything while I've been busy. Everyone will be amazed by your efforts."
"Really?" Angel's eyes lit up with joy, sparkling like stars.
She couldn't help but imagine her life with William after the wedding.
Angel had been tirelessly preparing for the engagement party, from the venue decorations to the champagne, snacks, and various ornaments, including a couple of dolls. She had planned everything herself, and even Jack had surprisingly not "bothered" her lately.
Seeing William nod, Angel's happiness grew.
She hesitated for a moment before tentatively asking, "William, since our engagement party is tomorrow, could you take me to your family's house? I know your mother and Abigail don't like me, but wouldn't it be nice to get their blessing for such an important event?"
William frowned but remained silent. Angel grew nervous, about to press further, when he nodded.
"Alright, I'll take you there now."
They drove to the Fisher Manor, and from the moment they got out of the car, Angel clung to William's arm, her smile gentle but her eyes brimming with confidence.
Abigail and Daisy were having afternoon tea when they saw Angel and William walk in. Daisy's expression immediately darkened.
Abigail couldn't contain her anger, her face changing as she pointed at Angel, her voice rising. "Who let you into our house? Get out!"
Angel took a step back, her voice soft and gentle. "I wanted to come back with William. We're getting engaged tomorrow."
She looked at William as she spoke. William tightened his grip on Angel's hand, his gaze at Abigail stern and unyielding. "Show some respect. Angel and I are getting engaged tomorrow."
