Chapter 438 Clumsy
"Margaret, I heard about that whole Angel situation," Bradley said as he settled onto the couch, stroking his white beard. "Good thing you saw through Angel's true colors, or William would still be in the dark. William's always been sentimental, remembering Marjorie's kindness from back in the day."
"Grandpa, what are you talking about?" William's mouth twitched slightly.
Could Bradley stop bringing this up?
After a pause, he added, "Actually, I knew Angel was a fake from the start. That's why I teamed up with Margaret to pull off that act. Right, Margaret?"
Margaret shot William a glare. "Just stop talking!"
"Now that Angel's out of the picture, when are you two planning to get married? I can't wait to have grandkids," Bradley said with a broad smile.
"We're planning to get engaged next month," Margaret said calmly, sitting down next to Bradley.
"Grandpa, could you pick a good date for us?" William quickly sat next to Margaret, eagerly asking Bradley.
He had been waiting for the day he could marry Margaret for a long time.
Seeing the two of them so happy, Bradley felt content. He had always seen Margaret as his future granddaughter-in-law, and now that Angel had gotten what she deserved, he could finally relax and look forward to having grandkids.
As for the date, he had already chosen it.
Bradley chuckled and said, "Do you even need to ask? I've already picked the date—next month on the 5th. There's plenty of time for you to get everything you need."
"Next month on the 5th..."
Margaret felt a bit dazed. She remembered she had to attend a fashion design competition in a few days. If the engagement ceremony was next month, she wasn't sure if she'd be back in time.
Bradley noticed her hesitation and asked, "What's wrong, Margaret? Do you have something else going on?"
Margaret thought about the competition schedule. If everything went smoothly, it shouldn't interfere with the engagement.
She relaxed and smiled at Bradley. "Grandpa, it's nothing. I just have to go to Parislia for a fashion design competition in a few days. I was wondering if I'd make it back in time. But it should be fine, so let's go with your plan."
Bradley's smile grew brighter, and he nodded repeatedly. "Good, good. It's settled then. I'll start looking for a venue for the engagement ceremony. Margaret, make sure to take care of yourself while you're working. Don't overwork yourself."
"Don't worry, Grandpa. I'll be fine," Margaret said with a warm smile.
Maybe God was making up for something she lacked by giving her William and Bradley's care.
She felt truly lucky.
William patted the couch and said to Bradley, a bit defiantly, "Grandpa, I'm going with Margaret. You don't need to worry about her. I'll make sure she comes back safe and sound."
Bradley pointed a finger at William, half-joking and half-warning, "You better take good care of her. If she comes back looking thinner, I'll have to deal with you."
William shook his head and laughed helplessly. "Alright, alright. I got it, Grandpa. Don't worry."
Bradley finally felt completely at ease. Watching the young couple, he grew more fond of them. A servant reminded him it was time to rest, and Bradley got up with his cane.
"You two rarely come back. Stay here tonight. Theo, prepare a room for them so they can spend some time together."
Theo understood Bradley's intentions and agreed with a smile, heading upstairs to prepare the room.
Margaret and William exchanged a glance. Margaret shrugged helplessly. She understood the old man's sentiment, and it had been a while since they last visited.
After dinner, Bradley found an excuse to retire to his room, giving them a meaningful look before leaving. Margaret knew what he meant and smiled at William.
"My grandpa's always like this. Don't let it bother you. You know him well enough," William said, worried that Margaret might feel uncomfortable. He squeezed her hand gently to reassure her.
Margaret replied softly, "He's our grandpa. Why would I mind? I'm not that petty."
They chatted and laughed as they headed to their room. Once inside, Margaret let out a long breath, walked to the window, and stretched out the bedding, sitting on the bed and relaxing completely.
"Have I been inactive for too long? Why am I so tired today?"
"If you're tired, get some sleep. The old house is quite far from home," William said, sitting next to Margaret and subtly trying to wrap his arm around her waist.
Margaret noticed and gently swatted his hand away, scolding, "What are you doing? Hands off. You're sleeping on the couch tonight."
William was reluctant. They were about to get engaged, and he had waited so long to be close to her. It felt unfair.
"Margaret, Margaret, we haven't had a proper conversation in so long."
William's voice softened, almost pleading.
Margaret knew what he wanted. She missed him, too, but some things were non-negotiable.
"No means no. You're sleeping on the couch tonight," she said, half-jokingly but firmly.
William sighed and finally let go, conceding, "Alright."
It was late. After washing up, Margaret quickly fell asleep, but William, lying on the couch, couldn't sleep at all.
From the bed, he could hear her steady breathing. William opened his eyes and looked at Margaret, who was lying on her side, facing away from him, looking peaceful.
Unable to resist, he quietly got up from the couch, walked to the bed, and leaned in to plant a gentle kiss on her cheek.
Margaret stirred, feeling something on her face. She rubbed her eyes and saw William.
"Why aren't you asleep yet?"
