Chapter 8: Who Gave You Permission to Leave Alone?

Margaret chose the same piece as Lucy, a decision that seemed to challenge Lucy’s intentions. What Lucy didn’t know was that Margaret had studied piano under some of the most renowned teachers since she was ten.

No one had ever seen Margaret embarrassed in her life!

Margaret's fingers glided over the keys with practiced ease, transforming the piece into a melodious flow of music. The guests on the dance floor responded, their movements synchronized with the music, creating an enchanting atmosphere.

Everyone was mesmerized by Margaret's superior piano skills. Even William, who was greeting guests, was stunned. He looked at Margaret, dressed in a light blue evening gown with her wavy hair casually draped behind her neck, eyes closed, hands caressing the keys—she looked stunningly beautiful.

It wasn’t just William who was captivated; many of the guests were equally entranced by Margaret's skillful performance.

Below the stage, Lucy stood fuming. The realization that Margaret could play the piano— and play it better than she had—stung deeply. Her face burned with a mixture of humiliation and anger, feeling as if it had been slapped in front of the entire gathering.

When the piece ended, Margaret stepped down.

"Miss Scott, you are truly talented. I am ashamed of my skills," Lucy said graciously.

But inside, she was already consumed by jealousy and anger!

How could she, Lucy, be outdone by a country bumpkin?

At that moment, a middle-aged man in a black suit walked towards them.

Margaret was momentarily stunned. Wasn't this Jason Foster, the butler from her estate? Why was he here?

Was her identity about to be exposed?

Jason walked straight towards them. He glanced at Margaret but said nothing, instead addressing William and Daisy, "Hello, I am Jason Foster, the Scott family's butler. I am sorry. Mr. Scott is unwell and could not attend the banquet, so I am here on his behalf."

Daisy quickly stepped forward and said, "No need to be so formal. Is he alright?"

They exchanged pleasantries. Everyone knew that the Xavier and Bradley families had been closely connected for generations and once dominated the business market together.

However, Xavier had sold his company and retired from the business world many years ago. It was said that he had taken his granddaughter to travel the world.

But the Scott family's status remained unparalleled.

Jason presented the gifts prepared by Xavier: a world-famous painting, a piece of land in the southern part of the city worth billions of dollars, and several more exquisite items.

The Scott family was always generous with their gifts.

Margaret couldn't help but feel a bit distressed. She would rather have squandered the money herself than see it given to the opportunistic Fisher family.

But fortunately, Jason didn't reveal her identity or the little bit of fun she had left would have vanished.

Margaret was pondering this when Lucy spoke up, "The Scott family is indeed generous. By the way, their little granddaughter has always been a mystery to the outside world. Few know her name, and even fewer have seen her in person."

Hearing this, Margaret raised an eyebrow and looked at Lucy.

Noticing the gaze, Lucy looked back.

"What's the matter? Despite sharing the same last name, you have vastly different fates. Are you feeling a bit resentful?" Lucy taunted.

Hearing Lucy's words, Margaret immediately smiled and remained silent.

Lucy was annoyed. A country bumpkin acting so high and mighty, with no real standing to back it up—how audacious! As a malicious plan began to form in her mind, she watched Margaret’s retreating figure with a malicious smile.

Margaret took a glass of sweet wine and sat in a quiet corner. She felt someone watching her. Following her intuition, Margaret looked out, her gaze cutting through the crowd, and met William's eyes.

Since her piano performance, William's gaze had remained fixed on her.

The more he observed Margaret—her piano skills, her effortless grace—the more he was puzzled by her poise, which seemed at odds with her supposed background.

When their eyes met, William's heart skipped a beat, but Margaret’s look was brief and indifferent. She quickly turned away, leaving William with an unsettling feeling.

For no reason, William felt very angry.

With his privileged background, he was never short of women. William was used to women flattering and pleasing him. Margaret's indifference to his presence stirred an unfamiliar irritation within him.

Margaret took a sip of the sweet wine, lowering her head to sneer in a way that no one else could see.

She was well aware of William's scrutiny and knew that his arrogance likely meant he expected her to make a fool of herself. Seeing his surprise at her composed demeanor was, in her mind, a small victory.

Let William keep wondering!

She would never fall in love with such an arrogant man!

After sitting alone for a long time, Margaret saw that it was about time and decided to leave.

Just as she was about to call a cab, William's voice sliced through the ambient noise, laden with authority, "Who gave you permission to leave without a word?"
