Chapter 79 Margaret is the Murderer?
"Steven, what are you just standing there for? Get your butt moving and catch that murderer! Don't let her slip away!" Abigail scrambled up from the ground, shooting daggers at Steven.
Steven was head over heels for Abigail. She dragged him along today just to handle Margaret better. And now, it looked like he was up.
Steven had always put Abigail on a pedestal. Hearing her shout, he nodded like a bobblehead and hustled towards Margaret, blocking her way. "Margaret, right? You think you can just bounce after killing someone?"
Margaret was stunned. She glanced at the lake and said in a deep voice, "Go save Ella now; she can still be saved. If you keep blocking me, she'll really drown. Then tell me, who’s the real murderer?"
Margaret's voice wasn't loud, but it had this vibe that made Steven hesitate and almost step aside.
But Abigail snorted and stopped him. "Steven, don't listen to her. We saw Margaret push Ella into the lake. If anything happens to Ella, it's on Margaret, not us! Block her so she can't escape. I'll call the cops right now."
Hearing Abigail's words, Steven puffed up. "Don't worry, Abigail. With me here, she ain't going nowhere!"
Abigail then grabbed her phone and dialed 911. "Hello, officer? Someone got pushed into the water at Lover's Lake. Yeah, Lover's Lake. Get here quick!"
Margaret's face turned icy. Ella was drowning, and Abigail was stopping her from saving her, now calling 911. What was Abigail really up to?
"Margaret, I called the cops. You can't run!" Abigail's eyes gleamed with malice. As long as she could nail Margaret, who cared if Ella drowned?
If Ella survived, Margaret would only face assault charges. But if Ella died, Margaret would be up for murder. Without Ella as a witness, the cops would rely on her story. If she swore Margaret pushed Ella, and with Steven backing her up, Margaret would be toast.
Thinking about getting rid of Margaret soon, Abigail's eyes sparkled with excitement. "Margaret, you murderer! You're gonna rot in prison!"
Margaret rubbed her forehead. Abigail was seriously nuts.
Just as Margaret was about to shove Steven aside, a tall figure strode over and said coldly, "What's going on here?"
Following the voice, Margaret saw Lyle. He'd been worried when Margaret didn't come back for so long, so he ditched the photoshoot and came looking for her. He hadn't expected to see Abigail and Steven hassling Margaret and caught bits about a "murderer."
"Lyle, perfect timing. Ella fell into the water." Margaret pointed to the lake, her voice calm and steady. "I'm going to save her. You call for an ambulance."
"I'll go!" Before Margaret could finish, Lyle took a quick step forward and dove into the freezing lake without even taking off his clothes.
Margaret watched Lyle dive in with some concern. If she remembered right, Lyle wasn't exactly Michael Phelps. Luckily, a few minutes later, Lyle managed to find Ella struggling in the water.
Margaret quickly called the nearest hospital. "Hey, someone’s drowning at Lover's Lake. We need an ambulance, like, now!"
Lyle, struggling a bit, swam towards the shore with Ella. Margaret jumped into the water to help out.
"Lyle, you good?" Seeing Lyle looking wiped, Margaret swam over to help pull Ella.
Lyle shook his head and flashed a tired smile. "I'm good."
Together, they got Ella onto the shore and laid her on the grass.
"Ella, can you hear me?" Margaret patted Ella's face. But Ella's eyes stayed shut, her face pale, lips purple, and she wasn’t responding.
Margaret checked Ella's pulse; there was none.
"Margaret, Ella's dead!" Abigail stepped forward, pointing at Margaret and yelling, "You pushed her into the water and killed her! You're a murderer!"
Abigail's voice buzzed in Margaret's ears like an annoying fly, making her snap. She turned and glared at Abigail. "Shut up!"
Abigail had never seen Margaret so fierce before. The intense vibe made Abigail hesitate and step back.
Margaret knelt and started CPR on Ella, pressing her chest over and over. Ella was in bad shape, and waiting for the paramedics would be too late.
Margaret wasn't sure she could bring her back, as Ella had been underwater too long. She had timed it perfectly, but Abigail and Steven's interference made her miss the best rescue window. Now, Margaret could only do her best.
CPR was exhausting. Even with Margaret's good physical condition, she was getting tired after ten minutes.
"Margaret, need a hand?" Lyle squatted beside her, seeing the sweat on her forehead, feeling a bit worried.
Margaret shook her head. "No. Go check on the ambulance."
Lyle stood up to make a call, while Abigail sneered. "Margaret, stop the act. Ella's dead. Who are you trying to fool? Pretending now won't change the fact that you're a murderer!"
Margaret ignored her, focusing entirely on performing CPR.
Just as Abigail was about to run her mouth again, the sound of police sirens came from a distance. A police car was heading towards Lover's Lake.
Abigail couldn't hide her excitement, coldly looking at Margaret. "Margaret, the cops are here! You, the murderer, can't escape!"
Lyle hung up the phone and heard Abigail's words, frowning. "I’m warning you, don’t falsely accuse Margaret!"
"Falsely accuse her? I saw it with my own eyes!" Abigail's eyes shifted to Lyle. "What's your deal with Margaret? Why do you care so much about her?"
"None of your business," Lyle replied coldly, ignoring Abigail, and walked to Margaret's side, wiping the sweat from her forehead. "Margaret, you okay? The ambulance is almost here."
"Yeah." Margaret nodded slightly. Right now, she could only focus on giving Ella CPR.
But Ella still showed no signs of improvement.
