Chapter 193 Are You Sure She's Marjorie?
The sudden kiss threw Margaret for a loop. It took her a hot second to even process what was happening.
What the hell was William doing? They'd already called off their engagement. She and William were done. What gave him the right to pull this crap?
With a steely resolve, Margaret chomped down hard on William's lip. The taste of blood and the sharp sting made William back off real quick.
Margaret's chest was heaving with a mix of shame and fury as she spat out, "William, cut it out!"
William's face was all serious, and the cold vibe he was giving off was downright chilling. The air felt like it froze right then and there.
With his brows knitted together, William's handsome face was all tense, his eyes narrowed, and he stared at Margaret with this unreadable look. Did she really hate his touch that much? Back in the day, she used to love it when he kissed her like that.
Who knows how long it took before he finally spoke in a deep voice, "Margaret, are you really with Lyle?"
Margaret's brows furrowed.
"Did you call off the engagement because of Lyle?" Seeing Margaret stay silent, William's face got even colder.
Margaret was at a loss for words. Because of Lyle? William'd been messing around with another woman and now he was blaming her?
Margaret suddenly looked up, meeting his icy gaze. "William, don't drag me and Lyle into this. Don't you get why I called off the engagement?"
"I don't get it!" William's eyes were dark and filled with hidden anger. "Tell me, why exactly."
Today, he wanted to hear it straight from Margaret.
Margaret sneered. "Since you're playing dumb, fine, I'll spell it out for you."
Taking a deep breath, Margaret stared into William's eyes and continued, "A long time ago, I told you that I wouldn't allow a third person in my relationship. My future husband has to love me and only me. And you, clearly, have always loved Marjorie."
"So, you called off the engagement because of Marjorie?" William raised an eyebrow, his mood suddenly lifting. Not because of Lyle, but because of Marjorie? Did that mean Margaret still cared about him? She called off the engagement out of jealousy.
"Yes." Margaret nodded.
William's eyes grew darker, and he spoke in a low voice, "Then if I say that my relationship with Marjorie isn't what you think, that there's nothing between us, would you come back to me?"
"Do you think I would believe that?" Margaret smiled sarcastically.
William looked at her deeply. "Why wouldn't you believe it?"
Margaret added, "On the day of our engagement ceremony, you completely disregarded my feelings and vanished. I thought something terrible had happened to you and went crazy looking for you, but where were you? You were with Marjorie. Clearly, in your heart, Marjorie is way more important than me. Or rather, from the start, the person you truly loved was Marjorie. Given that, this engagement, which shouldn't have existed in the first place, has no reason to continue."
William squinted. "I didn't blow off your feelings. Didn't I text you that day, saying I'd pick you up later?"
Margaret was floored. She scoffed, "I never saw any text."
William's brows knitted together. His phone had died that day, and it was Marjorie who sent the text.
Seeing William stay silent, Margaret coldly asked, "William, can you honestly say you haven't loved Marjorie all these years? That she isn't the one you've always cared about?"
"Margaret, I won't lie. I do have a special feeling for Marjorie, but it's not what you think." William chose his words carefully, unsure how to explain to Margaret.
Yeah, Marjorie had a big place in his heart. He once thought Marjorie was the one he was searching for, the one he loved. But after meeting Margaret, he started falling for her, and his feelings shifted.
When he saw Angel, he realized he didn't have the same feelings for her. The person he wanted to spend his life with was still Margaret.
But Marjorie had saved his life, and he wasn't an ungrateful jerk. So, when Marjorie asked for stuff, he agreed without a second thought.
Margaret bit her lip, staying silent. Her heart, though, was slightly moved. How much of William's words could she believe?
"I've explained Marjorie's situation to you. Now, shouldn't you explain your relationship with Lyle?" William's heart was still troubled by the scene he had witnessed downstairs.
Margaret, however, shot back with another question, "William, are you sure Angel is Marjorie?"
"Of course." William answered without hesitation.
"Why are you so sure?" Margaret pressed.
William's eyes took on a probing look. "Margaret, what are you doubting?"
Margaret pursed her lips, about to speak when William's phone suddenly rang. He took his phone out of his pocket and looked down. It was Angel calling. Seeing Marjorie's name flashing on the screen, Margaret's face darkened.
William's slender fingers pressed the answer button. "Marjorie?"
On the other end of the line, Angel's panicked voice came through. "William, help me! Please help me!"
"Marjorie, what's wrong?" William's tone involuntarily carried concern.
"Don't come any closer, ah! William, help!" Angel's voice on the phone was tearful, like she was facing something terrifying.
"Marjorie? Marjorie? What's happening?" William asked anxiously.
But the call was cut off. William tried calling back, but no one answered.
"Margaret, Marjorie might be in danger. I need to check on her." William gave Margaret a serious look.
Before Margaret could respond, he bolted towards the door and left.
Watching William's hurried departure, Margaret's heart sank into despair. He had just said his feelings for Angel weren't what she thought. But as soon as he got Angel's call, he rushed over like a madman.
The truth was clear. In William's heart, Angel was way more important than she was.
