Chapter 78 What Goes Around Comes Around
Margaret shifted her weight just enough to dodge the attack, smooth as butter.
"Ella, what the hell are you doing?" Margaret shot a look at Ella, who was seething with rage.
Ella was a real pain in the ass. Last time, she tried to stab her, and now she wanted to dunk her in the lake. Seriously, what was Ella's deal? They didn't have any major beef. Why was she so hell-bent on taking her out?
Ella missed her mark and glared daggers at Margaret. "You bitch! You got me canned by William and blacklisted. Now I can't even get a job. I'm not letting you off the hook. Soon, you'll be six feet under!"
Margaret smirked. "Ella, give it a rest! No one's out to get you. If you hadn't been shady and messed with the company, you wouldn't have been booted."
Margaret couldn't help but find it funny. Why did people always blame her instead of owning up to their crap?
"I did nothing wrong!" Ella's face twisted in anger. "If it weren't for you, why wouldn't William even look at me? I busted my ass for years. Before you showed up, he cared about me. But ever since you came along, everything changed! He's all about you now, always helping you out. You're just some nobody. What makes you so special? Why would he risk his neck for you? It's all your fault! You turned him against me, framed me, and got me fired. If it weren't for you, William would be mine!"
Margaret couldn't help but laugh. William, in love with Ella? Where did she get that idea?
Margaret sneered. "Get real. This is all on you. Maybe you should take a good look in the mirror."
Ella's rage hit a boiling point seeing Margaret so calm.
"Margaret, I'm not letting you off! You should've been dead a long time ago! You're a curse! Today, you're done for!" Ella screamed, losing it. Today was her shot to get rid of Margaret once and for all.
Ella's face contorted as she charged at Margaret with everything she had.
Margaret just smirked. Ella? Kill her? What a joke!
Margaret sidestepped, letting Ella's momentum carry her. With the ground still slick from last night's rain, Ella slipped and went flying into Lover's Lake.
With a huge splash, Ella hit the water.
"Help, help!" The June air was still chilly. Soaked to the bone, Ella turned pale, flailing and screaming. She couldn't swim!
She'd planned to push Margaret in, but now she was the one in the drink. Her body started to sink, and panic set in as she struggled to breathe.
There was no one else around, just Margaret.
"Margaret, help me!" Ella screamed, her voice cracking with desperation.
Margaret stood on the shore, arms crossed, looking down at Ella thrashing in the water. "Ella, you brought this on yourself. Karma's a bitch, ain't it?"
"I know I messed up. Please, save me." Fear of death had Ella begging, her pride long gone.
"Only now you see the light?" Margaret's face was stone-cold, showing no signs of jumping in to save her.
The lake wasn't that deep; Ella wouldn't drown right away. Since Ella wanted her dead, let her get a taste of her own medicine.
Ella gulped down water, coughing and choking, panic setting in. Seeing Margaret just standing there, she spat out, "You bitch! Watching me die? I'll haunt you forever!"
She choked on more water, fear swallowing her whole. She started sinking.
"Margaret, I won't forget this." Ella's face was ghostly pale, trembling as death loomed.
"Save your breath." Margaret's face was unreadable, but she sighed, ready to wade in and pull Ella out. She didn't want a death on her conscience.
Margaret took a step towards the water when a sharp voice cut through the air. "Margaret, you pushed Ella into the lake!"
Margaret thought, 'What the hell? I didn't push her!'
She spun around to see Abigail storming over.
Next to Abigail was Steven Rogers, her classmate and wannabe boyfriend. After getting a text from Lucy yesterday, Abigail had dragged Steven to Lover's Lake early in the morning.
At first, Abigail didn't get why Lucy texted her. But seeing Ella and Margaret, it clicked: Lucy wanted to use Ella to get rid of Margaret.
But Ella screwed up, not only failing to push Margaret but falling in herself. Not wanting to waste the opportunity, Abigail had a brainwave and marched over with Steven.
Margaret ignored her, but Abigail grabbed her arm.
"What the hell are you doing?" Margaret frowned.
"Margaret, you murderer!" Abigail shouted.
"What crap are you spewing?" Margaret shoved Abigail away.
Abigail hit the ground. "I saw you push Ella into the lake! Now you're trying to shut me up?"
Margaret was stunned. When did she push Ella? It was Ella who had tried to push her! Abigail was clearly setting her up.
Margaret felt a surge of annoyance, looking at Abigail like she was nuts. "Abigail, are you blind?"
Ignoring her, Margaret turned back to the lake.
Ella had stopped struggling.
