Chapter 162 There Will Be No Engagement Ceremony Tonight
Margaret's eyes flickered with a mix of pain and determination. She shot William a look that could cut glass before turning on her heel. Her steps felt like she was dragging lead weights, each one harder than the last.
Margaret stumbled out the door, her mind in a fog. Juniper rushed up, out of breath, and blurted, "Margaret, I checked everywhere and couldn't find William."
"Don't bother," Margaret replied, her voice icy, her nails digging into her palms. The pain in her fingers was nothing compared to the storm raging in her heart.
Seeing Margaret's ghostly pale face, Juniper asked, worried, "Margaret, what's going on?"
"Juniper, let's bounce!" Margaret snapped back to reality, yanking Juniper towards the street. The taxi from earlier was still there; the driver had just come back from a bathroom break.
Just as he was about to start the car, Margaret yanked open the door, jumped in, and told the driver, "Take us to Sunset Haven Retreat."
Sunset Haven Retreat was a Fisher Group property and the spot for tonight's engagement bash.
"Margaret, what happened? Did you find William?" Juniper asked, sensing something was seriously off.
Margaret's face was stone cold, and she bit her lip, nodding.
"Where is he? Why isn't he with you? Did he head to Sunset Haven Retreat first?" Juniper asked, her worry growing. Margaret had never looked like this before, and Juniper knew something big had gone down.
Margaret closed her eyes and let out a bitter laugh. "There won't be an engagement party tonight."
"What?" Juniper was floored.
Margaret took a deep breath and said calmly, "I'm calling off the engagement with William. Tonight's shindig is off."
Juniper was stunned. "Calling it off? Margaret, you can't be serious!"
"Do I look like I'm joking?" Margaret laughed bitterly.
"Why?" Juniper pressed.
Margaret's heart twisted painfully. "Because the girl William's been hung up on is back. He was MIA all day 'cause he was with her."
"The girl he's been hung up on? You mean Marjorie's back? No way!" Juniper's voice was full of disbelief. She'd heard Margaret talk about Marjorie before, knowing William had once been head over heels for a girl named Marjorie. But Marjorie had fallen off a cliff years ago, and everyone thought she was dead. Now, on the day of William and Margaret's engagement, how could Marjorie just show up out of the blue?
Juniper didn't know how to comfort Margaret, "Even if Marjorie's back, William might not choose her. Margaret, don't do this. Talk to him."
"William's actions speak louder than words. Why should I make a fool of myself?" Margaret squinted her beautiful eyes, her tone bitter.
"But..." Juniper knew Margaret's personality. Margaret was decisive, proud, and had a lot of self-respect. Once she made up her mind, no one could change it.
Juniper wanted to say more, but Margaret cut her off, "Juniper, just let me be for a moment."
Margaret leaned back in her seat, the image of William and Marjorie hugging replaying in her mind, impossible to shake.
It was freezing and hurt like hell. Margaret had never felt anything like this before. It was unbearable, like she was being suffocated. But no matter how much it hurt, she had to tough it out. Right now, she had to be strong.
Since Marjorie was back and William had picked her, there was no point in tonight's engagement party. Instead of letting William call it off, she’d beat him to the punch. She wanted everyone to know it was her, Margaret, who didn’t want William!
At Sunset Haven Retreat, in the swankiest banquet hall on the first floor, guests were mingling, and the place was buzzing. This was where William, the big shot of the Fisher Group, was supposed to have his grand engagement party. Everyone who was anyone in Ravenford was there.
Reporters had shown up early, not wanting to miss a scoop. Everyone was hyped for the event, except for Lucy.
She glared at the stage at the front of the hall, where William and Margaret would soon be getting engaged and basking in everyone’s blessings.
"Lucy, chill out. It's just an engagement, not a wedding," Grace said, sensing Lucy's anger and trying to calm her down.
Lucy took a deep breath. "You're right, it's just an engagement."
"Exactly, we'll figure out how to get rid of that witch later!" Grace said, glancing towards Lyle and plotting. If Margaret and William got engaged, maybe she would leave Lyle alone, and she, Grace, would have a chance.
As time ticked by, everyone had shown up, but the stars of the night, William and Margaret, were MIA. Bradley was puzzled and called William, but his phone was off. Margaret’s phone just rang and rang.
"James, get someone to find William," Bradley said, frowning with a bad feeling. He knew his grandson well; William was never late. Especially on such a big day, he should’ve been here early.
"Don't stress, William might just be held up," James tried to reassure Bradley.
Just then, Daisy and Abigail strutted over in their high heels.
"Dad, what’s William up to?" Daisy said, looking annoyed.
Since that day when Ulysses held a press conference and Daisy spoke for him, her standing in the Fisher family had tanked. William had moved to Water Moon Estate and hadn’t been home for days.
Bradley shot her a cold look. "He's your son. Why are you asking me?"
Daisy was taken aback and was about to say something when Abigail gently tugged her hand.
"Grandpa, I’m sure William’s on his way," Abigail said sweetly, not missing a chance to throw shade at Margaret. "But Margaret should’ve picked up if William’s phone was dead. She’s got no manners."
Bradley was about to say something when someone suddenly shouted, "They're here, they're here!"
At the shout, everyone’s eyes turned to the door. Margaret, rocking a bright red dress, stepped out of a taxi and walked towards the banquet hall entrance.
Seeing Margaret from a distance, Bradley finally exhaled, but then he noticed something was off. Why was Margaret alone? Where was William?
