Chapter 11: Efficiency
Margaret had an excellent memory, almost photographic. She would only start entering data after she had a general understanding of the document's content. The process was somewhat tedious, but it posed no difficulty for her. She quickly adapted, and her speed increased.
The rapid clacking of Margaret's keyboard soon caught the attention of her colleagues, who whispered among themselves.
"Look at how fast she types. I thought I was fast, but I can't keep up with her."
"I thought she was just a country bumpkin who wouldn't know anything about this stuff, but she's pretty efficient."
"Yeah, did you see? Her work efficiency in the morning was really high. It seems that even though she's from the countryside, she's not completely useless. Otherwise, she wouldn't be William's fiancée, right? After all, I heard the Bradleys arranged this engagement."
"So what? Haven't you noticed that William doesn't even acknowledge her? She'll have to leave here eventually. Offending the chief secretary, who gave her this tedious task, means her days are numbered. Let's see how long she lasts."
"Well, there's nothing we can do about it."
All these murmurs reached Margaret's ears, but she paid no attention and focused on her work.
Overall, she handled her work with ease. When she was hungry, she would snack a bit; when she was thirsty, she would make herself a cup of tea; when she was tired, she would get up and walk around.
When it was time to clock out, most people were still busy and hadn't left. Margaret went to have dinner first and then leisurely returned to continue working.
She never compromised on her appetite; good food was one of her life's pleasures.
When Margaret returned after her dinner, Ella was furious and slammed the table. "Have you finished your work? You keep running around! I told you these stats need to be done today and ready for tomorrow. But you keep eating, drinking, and running off. What kind of attitude is that? If you don't want to do it, just say so. I'll assign it to someone else. If you cause any delays and the company suffers, can you take responsibility?"
Annoyed by Ella's nagging, Margaret raised her hand to rub her ear. "You said it needs to be done today. It's not even 7 PM yet; I have plenty of time."
Ella wasn’t backing down, but Margaret’s frustration got the better of her and she raised her voice. “Enough!”
Ella immediately fell silent, startling everyone else.
Margaret had no patience for nagging and was particularly annoyed by Ella’s persistent targeting. "Save your complaints for tomorrow if I don't finish. Now, please leave. If I don't finish because of your interference, the responsibility will be on you, not me."
Ella was momentarily stunned by Margaret's assertiveness, but then a wave of resentment rose in her heart.
"Fine! You're already shirking responsibility, huh? Let's see if you can finish by tomorrow!" Ella snapped.
Ella stomped off in her high heels, fuming. She took her anger out on the others. "No one leaves until their work is done!"
Margaret smirked and kept working, disregarding Ella’s outburst. As other employees left, Margaret remained the only one in the office. By 9:30 PM, she hit the final key, finishing all her work. Anyone else might have worked until 11 PM, but her efficiency made it easy.
