Chapter 137 The Woman I Love Most
'Is Lucy trying to outbid me?' Margaret shot Lucy a curious look, just about to raise her paddle again when a loud, clear voice boomed from the entrance. "Thirty million dollars!"
The room went nuts with that sudden ten million dollar jump.
Margaret's eyebrows knitted together as she turned to see who it was.
Striding in like he owned the place was William, tall and sharp in a suit with a dark green tie, oozing class and confidence.
Margaret's breath hitched. 'What's William doing here?'
Reporters swarmed him in no time. "Mr. Fisher, what brings you to tonight's charity auction?"
William, cool as a cucumber, replied, "Just doing my bit for charity."
"Mr. Fisher, can I ask you..." But before the reporter could finish, William waved them off, clearly not in the mood for interviews.
The host's voice rang out, full of excitement. "Mr. Fisher has bid thirty million dollars. Anyone else want to top that?"
"Thirty million, going once."
"Thirty million, going twice."
"Thirty million, going three times. No more bids? Sold!"
With the final gavel, William snagged the plush kitten Margaret had made for thirty million dollars.
"Congrats to Mr. Fisher for winning this item at thirty million dollars," the host announced, gesturing for William to come upstage for a special interview.
The room erupted in applause as William casually made his way to the stage. The lights hit him just right, making him look like he was glowing, all eyes on him.
"Thank you, Mr. Fisher, for your generous donation of thirty million dollars to charity." The host motioned for the audience to give him another round of applause.
William bobbed a greeting to the crowd as an acknowledgement, a small smile playing on his lips.
The host, curious, asked, "Mr. Fisher, who are you giving this handmade plush kitten by Master Leo to?"
William's smile widened a bit, his eyes briefly flicking to Margaret in the corner. Clearing his throat, he said, "I'm giving this plush kitten to the woman I love the most."
Margaret's heart skipped a beat, a bitter taste filling her mouth. 'The woman William loves the most? Marjorie? Did he spend thirty million on this kitten to give it to Marjorie? How ironic, considering I made it with my own hands!'
"Wow, which lady is so lucky?" The host's voice dripped with envy. "Is she here tonight?"
William's smile stayed put, giving nothing away.
Under the envious stares of the crowd, William walked off the stage, heading straight for the corner. Lucy, seeing him come her way, felt a rush of excitement. Could it be that William bought this kitten for her?
As he got closer, Lucy's heart raced, and she put on her best smile, a mix of shyness and hope. "William."
But William didn't even glance at Lucy, completely ignoring her as he made a beeline for Margaret.
Standing in front of her, he nodded slightly, his intense gaze locking onto her face as he confessed, "Margaret, I bid it for you."
The crowd erupted in whispers.
"So, Mr. Fisher is giving it to his fiancée."
"He's so devoted to her, it's almost sickening."
Margaret's breath caught as William approached. He bought the kitten she made to give to her? But he said on stage he'd give it to the woman he loved the most. Was she that woman? What was he playing at?
"Margaret?" William's frown deepened when she didn't respond.
Snapping back to reality, Margaret squashed the flutter in her heart and said coldly, "Sorry, I don't want it."
William's face darkened at her public rejection. "Weren't you bidding for it earlier?"
"I don't want it anymore," Margaret replied flatly, her words layered with meaning. "I won't take something that doesn't belong to me."
With that, she stood up. "Excuse me, I need to go to the restroom."
She turned and walked away. William's eyes narrowed as he watched her leave, his gaze darkening. He knew she was still mad about last night. He was frustrated too.
Last night on the Ferris wheel, he sensed she liked him. But then he mentioned Marjorie, and it all went downhill.
He spent the night smoking on the couch, and this morning, he went to find her, but she was gone. The hotel front desk said she left in the middle of the night.
He tracked her down to this charity auction. So he rushed over and saw her bidding against Lucy for the kitten, so he bought it. He planned to use it to confess to her in front of everyone, but she just walked away.
This sense of defeat was new and infuriating.
"William, Margaret is really too much," Lucy said, jealousy dripping from her voice as she saw his stern expression.
William buying the kitten for Margaret made Lucy's jealousy flare. He declared in front of everyone that Margaret was the woman he loved, which made Lucy seethe. But she didn't expect that ungrateful Margaret to reject him.
Still, it was an opportunity.
"William, you probably don't know, but last night Margaret went to a bar to meet a guy."
William's face turned icy, cold enough to freeze the room.
