Chapter 411 Encountering a Car Accident
Juniper took a deep breath and nodded. She had no idea how to face Samuel right now, but she knew she wasn't ready for this child.
She didn't turn around even as the door closed behind her.
Samuel had no idea how he managed to leave the hospital. Each step felt like his feet were weighed down with lead. Juniper's words about wanting to terminate the pregnancy echoed in his mind. He opened the car door and slumped into the seat, preparing to drive back to the set.
But his mind was elsewhere. His eyes welled up with tears, and he could only rely on instinct to avoid oncoming traffic.
Juniper's image kept flashing in his mind, along with the look in her eyes when she rejected him. He felt a mix of pain and helplessness. Lost in thought, his hand slipped, and the car veered straight toward the stone bridge railing.
With a loud crash, the black sedan collided with the railing, sending up a cloud of gray smoke. The windshield and front end were wrecked beyond recognition. Samuel lay slumped over the steering wheel, his face covered in blood, his vision a blur of red.
His eyelids grew heavier, and with the last bit of consciousness, he fumbled for his phone in his pocket. His thumb trembled as he dialed Juniper's number and brought the phone to his ear, silently repeating her name in his mind.
The call connected, and Juniper's voice came through, calm but with a hint of weariness. "You called me?"
"Juniper," Samuel managed a weak smile, his voice barely a whisper. He was struggling to hold on.
Blood dripped from his forehead, staining the phone. Juniper noticed something was off in his voice and frowned slightly, though she didn't realize it herself.
"What's wrong? Where are you? You..."
Samuel interrupted her, "Juniper, listen to me. Something happened. I might not make it. I'm sorry for everything."
Each word sent a sharp pain through his chest. His consciousness was fading, but he fought to stay awake.
"I don't know how much longer I can hold on, but I called to tell you that I really love you. But..."
Samuel smiled again, blood foaming in his mouth. "I really love you."
"If I die, go ahead and terminate the pregnancy. I should respect your decision. Juniper, I'm sorry."
Samuel's voice grew weaker. He knew he couldn't hold on much longer.
His hand went limp, and the phone fell to the floor.
Juniper's frantic voice came through the receiver, "Samuel, where are you? Say something, Samuel?"
Juniper sensed something was terribly wrong. Her brow furrowed tightly, and her voice grew urgent, but there was no response from the other end.
She had no choice but to hang up. Almost instinctively, she grabbed her coat and rushed out the door, determined to find Samuel.
The tension was something she hadn't even realized she felt.
Juniper drove along the route, searching for any sign of Samuel. When she reached the bridge where the accident had occurred, she saw his car.
It was totaled.
Her pupils contracted, and she quickly pulled over. She ran to the car and saw Samuel unconscious, his head covered in blood.
The phone was still connected.
Juniper was terrified, but she forced herself to stay calm. Her hands trembled as she touched Samuel's face, staining her denim jacket with dark patches of blood.
Her voice shook, "Samuel, Samuel, wake up, wake up."
Samuel didn't respond. Juniper carefully checked his breathing and sighed in relief.
She quickly dialed 911, her voice rapid and panicked as she described their location and the accident.
After hanging up, Juniper finally exhaled, but seeing Samuel's condition made her heart ache with guilt.
She felt a pang of self-blame.
If she hadn't mentioned the abortion, Samuel might not have had the accident. It was all her fault.
Juniper clutched Samuel's hand, ignoring the blood, her eyes welling up with tears that fell onto his hand.
She was incoherent, her hand gently touching Samuel's face.
"Samuel, I'm sorry. I didn't mean it. Please wake up. The ambulance is coming. You have to hold on."
Samuel seemed to sense something or maybe he heard Juniper's voice, and he found a sliver of consciousness.
"Juniper, why are you here?"
"Samuel, Samuel!"
Juniper's vision blurred with tears. Hearing Samuel's voice, she gripped his hand tightly. "Hold on. I've called the hospital. The ambulance is on its way."
Samuel's vision darkened. He didn't know if he could hold on, but he heard Juniper's voice and mustered the strength to speak softly.
"I want you to know, I really love you. Don't risk your health. Don't terminate the pregnancy. I..."
"I won't. I won't terminate the pregnancy. Don't worry, I won't," Juniper sobbed, realizing the consequences of her impulsive decision.
Seeing Samuel about to lose consciousness again, Juniper called out, "Samuel! Don't sleep. Hold on, hold on!"
In the distance, the sound of sirens approached, and headlights flashed. Juniper turned and waved frantically, shouting, "Over here! We're over here!"
The ambulance arrived quickly. Paramedics and nurses efficiently lifted Samuel onto a stretcher. Juniper, her hands still covered in blood, followed them into the ambulance.
