Chapter 178 Avalanche

"Ms. Scott, watch yourself out there. If all goes well, you should hit Crystal Peak before it gets dark," Stella Ward, the middle-aged lady, said warmly while stuffing more provisions into Margaret's bag.

"Thanks." Margaret felt a warm fuzzy feeling from the genuine hospitality of the mountain folks.

"Margaret, seriously, be careful!" Juniper was still fretting. Margaret shot her a reassuring grin. "Chill, if everything goes as planned, I'll have Pryce back by tomorrow."

With her gear all set, Margaret slung her backpack over her shoulder and headed deeper into the forest. At first, it was just a light flurry of snow. Margaret was laser-focused on reaching Crystal Peak ASAP and moved at a brisk pace.

Halfway up, the wind suddenly kicked up, and the sky turned all dark and menacing. Looked like a nasty snowstorm was brewing.

Margaret picked up the pace; she had to hit the peak before dark and find Pryce pronto.

Soon enough, big ol' snowflakes started falling. With the heavy snow, everything in front of Margaret turned into a whiteout. Without her compass, she would've been totally lost.

"Damn this weather!" Margaret muttered under her breath and sped up without thinking.

The wind got crazier, whipping snowflakes around, making it tough for Margaret to keep her eyes open. Not far off, the thick snow on the peak looked like it could avalanche any second.

Margaret kicked herself for not listening to Stella's warnings. She'd totally underestimated the brutal conditions and rushed up the mountain, landing herself in a tight spot.

As darkness closed in and the blizzard raged, she found herself stuck. Margaret paused to think. Best bet was to head back and try to get a chopper up the mountain tomorrow. That seemed way more doable. Who knew when this blizzard would let up anyway?

Just as she decided to turn back, a rumbling sound echoed from the distance. It sounded kinda like thunder, but it wasn't.

Margaret glanced towards the noise and saw a massive avalanche barreling down from the opposite peak straight at her! Her heart skipped a beat. Without thinking, she scanned the area. Luckily, there was a cave nearby. Maybe she could hole up in there. But if the snow sealed the cave entrance, she'd be in deep trouble.

"No way, gotta leave a distress signal." Thinking fast, Margaret spotted a big tree nearby. She quickly yanked off her scarf and tied it to the top. Then, she dashed into the cave.

Seconds later, the avalanche buried the cave entrance in snow. Margaret, feeling a bit rattled, rubbed her head. Against nature, humans were pretty much powerless.

She pulled out her phone and, no surprise, no signal.

Margaret flicked on her flashlight and scoped out the cave. It was pretty spacious and warm, way better than being out in the blizzard. She took off her backpack, which had enough food to last her a few days.

Taking a few deep breaths, Margaret tried to calm herself down. Juniper would soon figure out there had been an avalanche and would find a way to get her out.

Margaret was glad she had insisted on leaving Juniper in the village. Her only worry now was whether Bradley's condition could hold out this long.

After munching on some food, Margaret felt a lot better and found a clean spot in the cave to sit down.

Out of nowhere, she thought of William. On that deserted island, she and William had also taken shelter in a cave, leaning on each other. He had told her, "Margaret, no matter what happens, I will protect you."

Those were the good old days. But now, she was alone, facing this sudden disaster.

'William's probably with Marjorie right now, huh?' A bitter feeling crept up in her heart. Margaret realized she was desperately thinking about William. Maybe Juniper was right; she couldn't let go and shouldn't give up so easily. If Marjorie was truly a good girl worth loving, she would accept it, step back, and let them be. But if Marjorie was fake or not worthy of William's love, why should she give up?

Night fell, and in the Fisher Group building, in the president's office, William was burning the midnight oil. For some reason, he felt unusually restless and uneasy.

William called James. "James, how's Grandpa?"

James' respectful voice came from the other end of the line. "He's fine. Patterson just checked on him and said everything is normal."

"Okay," William responded lightly, "Thanks."

Bradley was fine. So where was this uneasy feeling coming from?

After hanging up with James, the feeling only grew stronger. William loosened his tie and leaned back on the sofa to rest. As soon as he closed his eyes, Margaret's beautiful figure unexpectedly popped into his mind.

Thinking about Margaret moving from Water Moon Estate to Lyle's house, William's face tightened.

With a slight frown, William took out his phone. The entertainment news about Margaret and Lyle had significantly decreased. It was clear that Starlight Entertainment had someone remove those news articles.

William's cold eyes narrowed slightly. 'If she wasn't guilty, why would she have the news removed?'

After all, when Margaret was falsely accused of pushing Ella into the water and was vilified, she seemed completely indifferent.

'Could Margaret really be with Lyle?' Feeling frustrated, William stood up and prepared to leave. As he passed the secretary's office, he couldn't help but walk over. The large office was dark, except for a dim light in the corner.

William's heart skipped a beat. The dim light was at Margaret's desk!

After Margaret handed in her resignation letter during the day, she had left. Over the past two days, William had passed by the secretary's office several times, and Margaret's desk had always been empty.

Could she have come back now?

A slight smile tugged at his lips as William walked towards the light.

At the desk sat a girl in a red dress, her head lowered. From his vantage point, William could only see the top of her head.

'Is it Margaret? Has she decided to come back?' Feeling a strange excitement, William's deep voice, as smooth as a cello, called out, "Margaret!"
