Chapter 198 BPL
"BPL, huh?" William's face went stone-cold as he rapped his knuckles on the table. "Got any dirt on this company?"
Feeling the heat, Peter shuffled through his papers and said, "Yeah, so BPL popped up a few years back. They’re into everything—real estate, jewelry, cosmetics, clothes. They’ve blown up fast, like, really fast."
Peter hesitated before adding, "Word on the street is they got rich doing some shady stuff."
"Is that right?" William smirked. "Who’s behind this? What’s their deal?"
Peter, all serious, replied, "The BPL boss is super low-key and mysterious. All we know is he’s from Aurorania. That’s it."
Margaret racked her brain but couldn’t pin down anyone who fit the BPL president’s profile. Shady dealings and being all secretive? Pretty standard. But this BPL boss snagged Royal Radiance and quickly dropped a knockoff of "Ice and Fire," stealing the Fisher Group’s thunder. Was this just random, or were they gunning for the Fisher Group?
Things were getting messy.
"Keep digging," William shot a look at Peter, his gut telling him this was no simple matter.
"Got it, Mr. Fisher," Peter nodded and headed out.
Margaret trailed behind him. Just as she was about to leave, William’s low voice stopped her. "Margaret, hang on."
Margaret turned back. "Yeah, William? What’s up?"
William strode over, his eyes locked on her face.
Remembering how William had pinned her to the couch earlier, Margaret’s face turned icy. "We’re on the clock. Let’s keep it professional."
Seeing her cold, guarded look, William’s face darkened. "This is about work."
"We already hashed out the 'Ice and Fire' project," Margaret said, stepping back to put some space between them.
"It’s about another project," William said, his voice deep.
Margaret blinked. "Another project?"
"Yeah." William’s eyes scanned her face as he pulled a document from the drawer. "This is the North Bay project. Check it out."
Margaret glanced at the thick stack of papers on the table, thinking, 'North Bay project? Is he giving me a new gig?'
"In a few days, the government’s opening bids for land near North Bay," William explained, seeing her confusion. "I’m planning to build a huge amusement park there."
Margaret’s mind flashed back to that time in Fleurancia when she and William were at an amusement park. On the Ferris wheel, he kissed her and said, "The top of the Ferris wheel is the closest place to happiness. If lovers kiss at the top, they’ll never be separated. Just like us now."
Thinking back to that day, Margaret’s mind got a bit foggy.
Right then, Angel waltzed into the CEO’s office with a cup of coffee, her tone dripping with suggestion. "William, you didn’t sleep all night. You must be wiped. Have some coffee to perk up."
Angel’s voice snapped Margaret out of her thoughts. Even though Angel’s voice was all soft and sweet, to Margaret, it was like nails on a chalkboard.
"William, try this. I made the coffee myself." Angel sauntered over to William and handed him the cup.
Margaret couldn’t stand it any longer. She grabbed the North Bay project documents and said coldly to William, "I’m heading back to work. I’ll dig into the North Bay project."
Just as Margaret was about to leave with the documents, Angel piped up, "Margaret, wait a sec."
Margaret ignored her and walked straight out of the CEO’s office. As soon as she stepped out, her phone buzzed with a message from Anthony: [I found some basic info on Angel.]
Margaret’s spirits lifted, and she quickly replied: [Send it over.]
A few seconds later, an email from Anthony popped up. Margaret opened it and skimmed through the basic info on Angel.
[Angel, female, 21 years old. Height 5'5", weight unknown. Father Quentin, a taxi driver, had a car accident two years ago and has trouble walking. Mother Diana, unemployed, does farm work at home. The family is poor, and she had an older brother who died at eight. When Angel was about four, she was kidnapped by traffickers. There’s a big gap in her records after that. In her teens, she was adopted by someone from Aurorania and settled there. Angel came back to the country six months ago and reunited with her biological parents. She’s a resident singer at Enigma Bar.]
Margaret’s eyes narrowed as she stared at the screen, thinking, 'Aurorania again? What are the odds?'
The info Anthony sent was pretty basic. Margaret thought for a moment and messaged Anthony: [Can you find out who adopted Angel? And I need her life story in Aurorania.]
Anthony replied: [Haven’t found that yet. Need more time.]
Margaret shot back: [ASAP.]
She had a gut feeling that Angel wasn’t as simple as she seemed.
'Where did Angel go after being kidnapped at four? Why is there a gap in her records that even Anthony couldn’t find? Is Angel really Marjorie? What’s she hiding?' Margaret pondered for a moment and then remembered something. She sent another message to Anthony: [Also, check out Baxter Pty Ltd.]
[On it!] Anthony quickly replied.
'The president of Baxter Pty Ltd is from Aurorania, and Angel was adopted by someone from Aurorania. Could there be a link? Or is it just a coincidence, given how big Aurorania is?' Margaret rubbed her temples, hoping the truth would come out soon.
