Chapter 208 The Once Fiancée
Earlier, some nosy folks had already started spreading lies about Margaret online. Lyle rushed over the moment he saw Margaret getting hassled.
But as soon as he walked in, he caught Mia talking to the reporters. Seeing Mia, Lyle's face instantly turned icy.
The reporters, spotting Lyle, swarmed him and started firing off questions.
"Lyle, is the world-famous pianist Mia Davis really your fiancée?"
"Lyle, is your engagement to Ms. Davis a family setup? Why haven't we heard about it before?"
"Lyle, is your relationship with Ms. Scott the cohabitation thing that's been rumored online? Are you serious about her? Will you dump Ms. Davis for her?"
"Move aside!" Lyle's handsome face was tense, his brows furrowed, as he pushed through the crowd and went straight to Margaret. "Margaret, you okay?"
Margaret shook her head. "Lyle, you got here just in time. There's a woman here claiming to be your fiancée. Shouldn't you clear this up for your fans?"
Lyle was a top actor right now. After today's mess, who knew what the media would write. This could mess up both Lyle's acting career and Starlight Entertainment. So, Margaret was hinting that Lyle should clear things up ASAP.
Seeing Lyle's concern for Margaret, Mia's pretty eyes dimmed a bit. She took a deep breath, kept a classy smile, and looked at Lyle. "Lyle, long time no see."
Lyle shot Mia a cold look and said flatly, "Apologize to Margaret!"
Mia's face changed. "Why should I apologize to her? She shamelessly seduced my fiancé, and I have to apologize to her? Ridiculous!"
"When did I become your fiancé?" Lyle said coldly.
Mia's face darkened. "Lyle, do you dare to swear that there was never an engagement between us?"
"Mia, our engagement was called off ages ago. Stop making a scene," Lyle said, frowning.
Yeah, there had been an engagement between Lyle and Mia. The Pennington family and the Davis family were old pals, and the two families had a good relationship.
When they were kids, the two families set up an engagement between Lyle and Mia. But when the Pennington family hit hard times, and Lyle was at his lowest, Mia took off with another guy and went abroad. Even though Lyle didn't have much affection for Mia, it was a huge slap in the face for any guy to have his fiancée run off with someone else without a word.
Since then, Lyle never mentioned Mia to anyone. Later, Lyle met Margaret. It was Margaret who encouraged him, gave him hope, and helped him through his darkest times, allowing him to rebuild the Pennington family.
So, to Lyle, Mia was just a nobody. Not a fiancée, not even a friend.
After hearing Lyle's words, a reporter immediately asked, "Lyle, you said your engagement with Ms. Davis was called off. Does that mean there was indeed an engagement between you two?"
Before Lyle could get a word in, Mia butted in, "Of course. And our engagement was never called off. It's still on. Margaret's the one wrecking other people's relationships!"
"Mia, let me make this clear, I have nothing to do with you," Lyle said, his lips pressed into a thin line. "Stop claiming to be my fiancée."
"Lyle, why are you being so cold? Is it because of Margaret?" Mia walked up to Lyle and grabbed his arm. "I know you have some misunderstandings about me. Actually, back then..."
Before Mia could finish, Lyle quietly pulled his arm away and coldly cut her off, "I don't want to talk about the past. Don't bring it up again. From now on, take care of yourself and stop slandering or hurting Margaret. That's it."
After saying this, Lyle turned to look at Margaret. His previously cold eyes instantly softened. "Margaret, let's go."
Margaret didn't want to get tangled up with these people any longer and nodded lightly.
Seeing Margaret leave with Lyle, William's already cold face turned even darker. He stepped forward and said coldly, "Margaret!"
Margaret paused and turned to look at William. "Thanks for today."
No matter what, William had helped her out today, and she should thank him.
William looked at Margaret expressionlessly. He didn't want her thanks. He wanted her to rely on him like she used to, to enjoy his protection. Not this indifference and distance.
"William." Angel's voice interrupted William's thoughts.
Angel looked at Margaret warily, holding William's arm and resting her head on his shoulder. "William, didn't you say you found a new place for me? Why don't we go check it out now?"
Margaret's face turned cold. She no longer looked at the scene in front of her and turned to follow Lyle. The two left the boutique.
"Margaret, where are you going? I'll drive you," Lyle said, gripping the steering wheel tightly and glancing at Margaret.
It was a rare weekend, and Margaret had planned to go shopping, but after this mess, she lost interest. "Take me back to East Garden."
"Okay." Lyle turned the car towards East Garden.
"Lyle, what's the deal with you and Mia?" Margaret asked, leaning back in her seat.
Lyle thought for a moment and explained, "It was just an engagement arranged by our parents when we were kids. When the Pennington family hit a financial crisis, Mia left with another guy. I have nothing to do with her anymore, and we haven't been in contact for years."
"I see." Margaret pondered.
According to Lyle, Mia was indeed his fiancée. Although Mia was the one who cheated on him first, they hadn't officially called off the engagement.
"If this isn't handled well, it could have a big impact on you," Margaret said, rubbing her forehead in frustration.
