Chapter 70 Missing Button
Margaret had been chillin' at home for a few days, and her foot was almost back to normal.
Today was the big day for the "Ice and Fire" series ad shoot. Margaret rolled up to the studio a good half-hour early to make sure everything was set.
Soon enough, Annie, Bruce, and Lyle showed up right on time.
"Everything good to go?" Margaret double-checked everything and, seeing no issues, asked the makeup artist.
The makeup artist nodded. "You can come over for makeup now."
"I'll change first." Annie shot Margaret a blank look and asked, "Where's the outfit for today?"
"Right here." Margaret handed Annie the bag with the dress.
She had designed this dress herself, the latest from Leo Studio. Margaret had crafted this dress to match the "Ice and Fire" jewelry series perfectly.
Annie grabbed the dress and, with her agent, headed to the dressing room.
When Annie came back out, she was rocking the fiery red dress. The dress fit Annie like a glove, with its layered skirt showing off her graceful figure.
As Annie strutted out, she looked like a blazing beam of red sunlight, so stunning that everyone was glued to her. It was drop-dead gorgeous, and the effect was way better than expected.
Margaret was stoked with the result. Since Annie's "Ice" performance was kinda meh, they'd play up the "Fire."
Just as Margaret was about to tell the makeup artist to get Annie ready, she heard Annie say coldly, "Margaret, you really gonna let me shoot in this dress?"
"What's the issue?" Margaret frowned, eyeing Annie. The dress looked perfect.
Annie slowly turned around, and when everyone saw her back, they were floored.
On the back of her dress was a row of diamond buttons, sparkling against the red fabric. But right in the middle, the biggest, flashiest diamond button was missing.
What the heck? Everyone exchanged shocked looks. How could the most important button be missing?
"Margaret, is this your idea of professionalism? Bringing me a dress like this for the shoot?" Annie's cold eyes locked onto Margaret as she sneered.
Margaret frowned hard. She had designed this dress herself, with ten diamond buttons lined up as decorative accents. When she checked earlier, all ten buttons were there.
Seeing Margaret's frown, Lyle stepped up and asked, "Could it have fallen off in the changing room?"
"No way," Margaret said firmly.
Juniper personally inspected every piece from Leo Studio to ensure top quality. Margaret had told Juniper to be extra careful with this dress, so the buttons wouldn't just fall off.
Plus, if it had fallen off, there'd be thread remnants. But now, where the button was missing, there were no thread remnants at all.
The only way this made sense was if someone had straight-up cut off the button on purpose.
Lyle frowned but still had his agent check the dressing room. After a bit, the agent came back out. "No button in there. Maybe it fell outside; I'll go look."
"No need!" Margaret marched up to Annie, her voice firm. "Annie, hand over the button!"
Annie's face went pale. "What are you talking about?"
Margaret smirked. "I mean, you cut off the button on purpose!"
Annie's eyes flashed with panic. She had indeed cut off the button to frame Margaret.
Lucy had told her that William was a stickler for details. If Margaret made such a rookie mistake during the shoot, she'd be in big trouble and might even get canned. So, Annie had taken the risk to cut off the button to frame Margaret.
She hadn't expected Margaret to figure it out and call her out in front of everyone.
Annie calmed herself. She had already flushed the diamond button down the toilet, so Margaret couldn't prove anything.
Thinking this, Annie's expression returned to normal, and she raised her voice. "Cut it off on purpose? That's ridiculous! Margaret, why would I do that? I worked hard to get the Fisher Group endorsement. This dress was custom-made for their ad shoot. Why would I ruin my own shoot by cutting off the button?"
"I'd love to know why you did it." Margaret's eyes narrowed, her cold gaze locked on Annie.
It was clear Annie's actions were aimed at her. But she had only known Annie for a few days. Why did Annie have such beef with her? Could it be just because she criticized Annie during the audition?
If Annie cut off the button just to get back at her, then Annie was really dumb. As she said, the Fisher Group endorsement was given to her because of Bruce. By doing this, she was wrecking her own opportunity and reputation.
"Darling, you have to stand up for me." Annie pouted and clung to Bruce's arm. "Margaret messed up and is trying to pin it on me."
Bruce was about to say something, but Lyle, looking stern, said, "Annie, don't make accusations without proof."
Lyle trusted Margaret completely. She wouldn't make such a basic mistake. If Margaret said Annie cut off the button on purpose, then Annie did it on purpose.
Seeing Lyle side with Margaret, Annie's face showed even more hurt. She looked pitifully at Bruce. "Babe, they're all ganging up on me."
People in the room started whispering, "Annie wouldn't cut off the button herself, would she?"
"Yeah, she has no reason to do that."
"Could it really be Margaret's fault?"
Margaret sneered. Annie was a real actress; her performance was so convincing that those who didn't know might actually think Margaret was in the wrong.
Margaret was about to speak when a cold male voice suddenly cut through the chatter. "What's going on here?"
