Chapter 12: Darkness Falls
Margaret was getting ready to pack up and leave work when she received a call from Ella.
"How much longer do you need to finish?" Ella asked.
"I'm already done," Margaret replied.
"Are you sure you checked everything carefully and there are no issues?" Ella pressed.
This response was beyond Ella's expectations.
Margaret, holding her patience, said, "I'm sure. If there's nothing else, I'm hanging up. I need to leave now."
"No! You can't leave now!" Ella's voice suddenly rose.
Margaret stopped in her tracks. "Why?"
"I just got a call from Mr. Price. He said there's another set of data that needs to be added. I'm bringing it to you now, so wait for me," Ella said urgently.
"Just send me the data directly. It'll be too late by the time you get here," Margaret replied.
"No, the content is quite complex and new to you. If you mess it up, it'll be a disaster. Wait for me, don't get impatient. I'm home, but I'll rush over and work overtime with you. What are you complaining about? Mr. Price contacted me suddenly; I can't help it!" Ella said.
"I got it," Margaret replied.
Thinking that Ella wouldn't sacrifice her personal time just to make things difficult for her, especially since it was already so late, Margaret didn't overthink about it and settled back into her seat.
Margaret listened to music and played her usual game to relax. When she checked the time again, forty minutes had passed, and Ella still had yet to arrive.
Margaret went to the restroom and played on her phone for a while, and another twenty minutes passed. Ella still hadn't shown up, so Margaret called her.
"When will you get here?" Margaret asked.
"I took a cab to save time. But there was a traffic accident on the way, and I've been stuck for a long time. I should be there in about half an hour. Everything’s going wrong today. It's all Mr. Price's fault for not notifying me earlier, making me come so late, and now I'm stuck in traffic. Hey, driver, can you speed up? I'm in a hurry!"
Listening to Ella's rambling complaints, Margaret felt a headache coming on and lost her patience. "Hurry up," she said tersely.
Ella, still at home, smiled triumphantly when Margaret hung up the phone and turned to go into the bathroom.
Let Margaret wait! No matter how long she waited, she won't see her.
Another forty minutes passed, and Ella still hadn't arrived. Margaret's patience was exhausted.
She called Ella again, "Ella, do you plan to spend the night at the office with me?"
At that moment, Ella was lying comfortably on the couch with a face mask on, and in a complaining tone, she said, "Why are you so impatient? Do you think I'm not in a hurry? But what can I do? Just wait a little longer. I'll definitely be there in ten minutes. Hey, sir. Can you make it in ten minutes? You can? Good."
"If I don't see you in ten minutes, I’m leaving. You can enter the data yourself when you get here," Margaret said firmly.
Seeing Margaret hang up, Ella sneered and tossed her phone aside, leisurely eating a grape.
Margaret sensed something was wrong. After a moment of thought, she texted someone Ella's phone number: [Check this person's location for me.]
Five minutes later, the person replied.
Ella was in a residential area. Margaret realized she had been played and felt a surge of anger!
It seemed she still lacked experience in dealing with people like Ella, believing Ella would actually come from home to work.
Margaret grabbed her bag and walked out, planning her revenge. But just a few steps out, the lights suddenly went out.
The empty office was instantly plunged into darkness.
The darkness took Margaret's vision away, and her mind was engulfed in boundless fear.
She was afraid of the dark, always had been.
This fear was deep in her bones. Her heart raced, her hands and feet went numb, and beads of sweat dotted her brow.
In her panic, she huddled under her desk, wrapping her arms around her knees. Although there was a faint light from her flashlight, it didn't help much. The thought of the surrounding darkness kept invading her mind with terrifying thoughts.
What happened?
A power outage?
She wanted to call the company security but realized she didn't have their contact information. The anxiety clouded her thoughts, leaving her almost paralyzed with fear.
