Chapter 484 Undercurrents at Lunch
Bradley started to get up to answer the door, but William stopped him with a slight smile. "Grandpa, let me get it. You and Xavier can just relax and enjoy your tea."
Margaret followed William to the door. As soon as they opened it, they saw Daisy and Abigail standing there.
Daisy's smile disappeared the moment she saw Margaret. "What are you doing here?"
"Why shouldn't I be here?" Margaret replied, her face blank.
She furrowed her brow slightly. Why were Daisy and Abigail here all of a sudden?
Today was supposed to be a happy day with Xavier returning from abroad, but seeing these two women had completely ruined Margaret's mood.
"Mom, today is Grandpa's welcome home party for Xavier. Of course, Margaret is here," William said coldly, refusing to let anyone belittle Margaret.
Abigail felt a surge of jealousy seeing William protect Margaret so fiercely. She silently vowed to drive Margaret away from William. Only she deserved to be William's wife.
Daisy, annoyed by her son's retort, asked, "Where's your grandfather?"
"In the dining room," William replied indifferently, taking Margaret's hand. "Grandpa was just saying he wants Margaret to give him a great-grandchild to enjoy family happiness. Don't ruin his mood."
William's tone was cold, reminding Daisy of her place.
"Mrs. Fisher, don't be mad at William. He's just blinded by that Margaret," Abigail said sweetly, holding Daisy's arm and trying to comfort her.
Abigail's obedient demeanor only made Daisy angrier. She couldn't understand why William had chosen a woman like Margaret.
Abigail's eyes were filled with deep jealousy.
Daisy and Abigail walked into the dining room. Daisy immediately put on a smile when she saw Bradley. "Dad, I brought Abigail to see you. We brought you some coffee beans."
"Grandpa, how have you been feeling lately?" Abigail asked politely.
Although their previous attempt to drug Bradley had been exposed, he hadn't driven them away. After all, Daisy was William's biological mother. Some things had to be kept up for appearances.
Bradley chuckled and nodded. "You came at a good time. Xavier just returned from his world travels, and we're having a welcome home party for him."
"Mr. Scott, hello," Daisy said with a fake smile, pulling Abigail closer. "This is William's cousin, Abigail. She and William grew up together and have always been very close."
"Hello, Xavier," Abigail said sweetly, sizing him up.
So this was the infamous Xavier? He didn't seem so intimidating.
Bradley was visibly displeased by Daisy's unnecessary comments and coughed lightly.
The atmosphere in the dining room was a bit awkward. Bradley broke the silence, "Let's eat. The kitchen has prepared a lot of dishes. Let's have a nice family gathering."
Family gathering. Abigail found the term gratifying. How could someone like Margaret be considered part of their family?
During the meal, Bradley and Xavier sat at the head of the table, with William and Margaret on one side and Daisy and Abigail on the other.
William occasionally served Margaret food, his eyes filled with a tenderness that he only showed her. "Try this, it's really good."
William's gentle actions stung Abigail. She picked at her food, barely eating, her head down.
Daisy was fuming, watching William dote on Margaret. He hadn't even glanced her way, but he was all about Margaret.
"William, don't just take care of Margaret. Eat something yourself," Xavier said with a smile.
Margaret's bowl was already full, a colorful mix of dishes, a clear sign of William's affection.
Abigail was seething with jealousy, watching William's tender gaze towards Margaret. She had to sit there, pretending to be gentle and ladylike, unable to show her true feelings.
Suddenly, Daisy couldn't take it anymore and deliberately dropped her knife and fork. "Oops, my utensils fell. Margaret, could you pick them up for me?"
Daisy had dropped them right in the middle of the table, forcing Margaret to bend down and reach under the table to retrieve them.
Margaret was speechless.
Did Daisy think she was a servant?
Before Margaret could respond, Xavier stepped in.
"Can't you pick them up yourself? If you don't want to, just get a new set. Margaret is my precious treasure, not a servant. I wouldn't dream of asking her to do such things," Xavier said protectively.
Xavier knew Daisy disliked Margaret, but as long as he was around, he wouldn't let anyone bully her.
Daisy was embarrassed and didn't know what to do. She was stuck, unable to decide whether to pick up the utensils or get a new set.
Abigail, who had been observing the situation, quickly offered, "Mrs. Fisher, I'll pick them up for you. I know you're most comfortable with this set."
Abigail pretended to be considerate and understanding.
She glanced at Margaret across the table and said with a smile, "It's really no trouble to pick up the utensils. Some people just don't know their place and can't even handle such a small task."
Abigail's sarcastic remark was aimed at Margaret.
"I have maids at home to do these things, and William doesn't want me to do them," Margaret retorted coldly, her eyes sharp.
"Besides, you were closer to the utensils. Why didn't you pick them up earlier? Are you trying to make yourself look good now?" Margaret scoffed, calmly serving Bradley more food.
"You!" Abigail's face stiffened, and she angrily bent down to pick up the utensils.
She and Daisy had come to the Fisher Manor today to dig up some old secrets, but running into Margaret had ruined their plans.
What infuriated Abigail even more was William's tenderness towards Margaret. She was consumed with jealousy.
What was so special about Margaret that she had captured William's heart?
Next week was their engagement party. Last time, Abigail had secretly poisoned Bradley, and Angel's appearance had ruined the event, causing Margaret and William to break up.
But in just a few months, they had reconciled and were closer than ever, ready to get engaged again!
Abigail's jealousy burned fiercely. If looks could kill, Margaret would have been torn to pieces by now.
Abigail clenched her fists.
Margaret, you wretched woman! I won't let you get away with this!
