Chapter 13: Save Me

"It's already eleven o'clock, and Margaret hasn't come back yet. Who knows where she's off to now—probably seducing some man."

William, feeling thirsty, went downstairs to get a glass of water and overheard Abigail's words.

Daisy immediately followed up. "A country bumpkin is a country bumpkin, never seen the world and lives recklessly. It's so late and she's still not back. Who knows where she's out partying!"

William felt a bit puzzled, but recalling Margaret's attitude towards him yesterday, he couldn't be bothered to care.

After all, what Margaret did had nothing to do with him.

Daisy deliberately said, "William, regardless of how Margaret behaves, if word gets out, it could ruin your reputation. After all, many people have seen her and know she's your fiancée. I think it's best to call off this engagement early and let her go. Suppose she stays any longer, who knows what trouble she'll cause. We might even have to take responsibility for her actions."

William replied indifferently, "Grandpa said we could call off the engagement in three months."

"Three more months?" Daisy screamed, "It's only been a few days, and I can't stand it anymore. You should talk to your grandpa again and get rid of her as soon as possible."

"Then you go talk to Grandpa." William glanced at Daisy.

Daisy immediately fell silent, knowing that approaching Bradley would likely lead to a reprimand.

William ignored her and went upstairs.

When he reached the study, he saw his phone on the desk light up with a message notification.

William opened it and saw two words: [Help me.]

Seeing it was from an unknown number, he dismissed it as a prank and continued with his work, though a lingering unease persisted.

By early morning, William had finished washing up and lay in bed, but sleep eluded him.

Margaret still hadn't come back. Where could she be?

William closed his eyes. William tried to put it out of his mind. After all, where that arrogant woman went was none of his concern.

As he tossed and turned, he realized that Margaret didn't know anyone here, so she should have returned by now.

When he thought of that distress message, something suddenly clicked in his mind. William pulled up his chat history with Bradley.

Bradley had sent him Margaret's phone number, but he hadn't saved it in his phone.

Only now did he realize that the distress message was from Margaret.

Was she in danger?

William sat up abruptly and immediately called back, but the phone was turned off.

He panicked. Could something really have happened?

William quickly dressed and hurried out of the house, getting into his car. After a moment's hesitation, he decided to head to the company first to see if he could get information from the security guards about when Margaret had last been seen.

When William arrived at the company, it was pitch dark. He found the security guard, who told him, "There's an electrical issue. Someone's coming to fix it in the morning. It won't delay the employees' work."

When asked about Margaret, the security guard was puzzled. "I haven't seen her."

William frowned. "She didn't come to work?"

"I saw her come to work in the morning, but I didn't see her leave after work."

The security guard was very sure. "I'm certain I didn't miss her."

Recently, Margaret had become a well-known figure in the company. Many people noticed her, and the security guard wouldn't have missed her if she had walked by.

So, Margaret was still in the company? Then why did she send a distress message?

The security guard thought for a moment and said, "Oh, right. I heard some people talking today. They said the chief secretary gave her a lot of work, and she might be working late. Could she have fallen asleep from exhaustion?"

Without further speculation, William decided to go upstairs to check. The security guard followed him, holding a flashlight to provide light.

"Margaret?"

"Margaret!"

William called out a few times, but there was no response.

When he reached Margaret's desk, he saw her bag still on the desk. His eyes then fell on two feet sticking out from under the desk.

William quickly crouched down, and the security guard shone the flashlight underneath.

In the light, William saw Margaret curled up in a ball, her face pale and her body trembling uncontrollably.
