Chapter 358 The Consequences of Failing the Task

At Ravenford, Angel lay on the hospital bed, feeling agitated. She hadn't seen William for several days.

Since that day when Lucy came to the hospital and William left with her, William hadn't returned.

Afterward, news came that Lucy had slit her wrists in a suicide attempt for William.

Angel called William many times, but no one answered.

She thought for a moment and then called Peter.

Peter was in a meeting when he suddenly received Angel's call.

Remembering William's instructions, Peter answered the call, "Angel."

"Peter, where's William? Why can't I reach him? Is he at the company?" Angel asked.

Peter replied in a deep voice, "Mr. Fisher went to Maplewood for disaster relief."

"What? He went to Maplewood?" Angel exclaimed.

The first thing that came to her mind was that Margaret was also in Maplewood.

"Yes." Peter nodded. "Angel, there was a major earthquake in Maplewood. Our company is committed to charity work, and the president went personally to set an example."

"Okay, I understand. Thank you, Peter." Angel hung up, disappointed.

She hadn't expected William to go to Maplewood, and her heart felt empty.

What worried her more was whether William went to Maplewood for disaster relief or for Margaret.

Thinking of Margaret, Angel couldn't suppress the jealousy in her eyes.

Just then, Angel received a text message.

Her face turned colder.

Angel changed out of her hospital gown, put on a dress, grabbed her handbag, and walked out of the ward.

"Angel, you..." The nurse looked at Angel in surprise.

Angel smiled slightly. "It's too stuffy lying around all day. I'm going out for a walk."

The nurse showed concern. "That's true, but Angel, you need to be careful. Your body is still very weak, so don't walk for too long."

"I will," Angel replied somewhat perfunctorily.

As she walked out of the hospital doors, a black car stopped right in front of her.

The car door opened, and a bodyguard in black said to Angel, "Get in the car, Angel."

Angel looked around, saw nothing unusual, and got into the car.

The car drove towards the suburbs and stopped in front of a villa by the mountains and water.

"We're here, Angel," The driver said, opening the car door.

"Thank you!" Angel got out of the car and walked into the villa.

In the villa's living room, a tall man in a charcoal gray suit, with a cold expression, sat on the couch waiting for Angel.

It was Jack.

"You're here?" Jack looked up as Angel entered.

Angel spoke cautiously, "Jack."

"Did anyone see you come here?" Jack asked coldly.

Angel quickly shook her head. "No, I was very careful."

"Why haven't you completed the task I gave you?" Jack suddenly stood up, looking down at Angel with a cold expression.

The powerful aura made Angel's body tremble. "Jack, I'll do my best."

"I only want success!" Jack exuded a chilling aura.

He picked up a thick cane and approached Angel step by step. "All these years, I've spent so much effort turning you into Marjorie. I sent you to get close to William, to gain his trust, to make him fall in love with you. But what have you done? After all this time, you're still at square one, with no progress at all!"

"No, there is progress!" Angel's face turned pale with fear as she looked at the cane in Jack's hand. "I pretended to have late-stage stomach cancer, which has softened William's heart. He has already broken up with Margaret. Now, the person William loves is me. Jack, believe me! I will succeed soon!"

"Really? Then where is William now?" Jack mocked.

"He went to Maplewood for disaster relief; it has nothing to do with Margaret," Angel said, stepping back.

"It better be that way!" Jack snorted coldly, his eyes flashing with cold light. "Angel, you should know the consequences of failing the task!"

Angel immediately said with trembling voice, "Jack, give me more time. I will complete the mission!"

"Fine, I'll give you one last chance! If you disappoint me again, you'll end up like this teacup!" As soon as Jack finished speaking, he swung the cane at the teacup on the table.

With a crash, the teacup fell to the ground and shattered into pieces.

Seeing that, Angel gasped.

"Go back and don't arouse suspicion," Jack said, sitting back on the couch.

"Yes, Jack, I'm leaving." Walking out of the villa, Angel let out a long sigh of relief.

In her mind, William's tall and handsome figure appeared, and Angel bit her lip.

She knew she was just a pawn for Jack.

Her adoptive father had taken her in only to turn her into Marjorie, to get close to William, and to extract secrets from the Fisher Group.

Jack was her adoptive father's son and her nominal brother, but he always ordered her around. If she didn't meet his expectations, he would beat her.

Angel's thoughts drifted.

She still remembered the first time she met William.

That was when she was ten years old.

From the time Angel could remember, she lived in a slum, in a house with bare walls, often going hungry.

Her father was a gambler who, when he lost money and got drunk, would take it out on her and her mother, often beating her black and blue. Her mother, trying to protect her, was seriously injured.

One day, when she woke up, her mother was gone.

Five-year-old Angel cried. "Mom, I want my mom!"

In return, she got another beating from her father. "You'll never see your mom again! You only cry all day. No wonder I keep losing money!"

Angel fell seriously ill, and when she recovered, there was a heavily made-up woman in the house.

"This is your new mom!" Her father said, pointing at the woman.

Angel cried. "No, you're not my mom!"

The result was another beating.

From then on, Angel learned to read people's expressions and tried her best to please that woman.

When she was ten, her father said he had a big deal, and if it went through, he would be rich.

"Dad, will we really live in a big house and eat good food?" Angel asked with some expectation.

"Of course!" That day, her stepmother was in a rare good mood and gave Angel a piece of candy.

Two days later, her father took them to a small wooden house on the mountain, where there were three fierce-looking men.

Angel vaguely heard them talking about kidnapping someone.
