Chapter 163 The Engagement Ceremony is Canceled
Margaret hopped out of the taxi, her face like a frosty queen, and strutted down the red carpet towards the center stage of the banquet hall. Her feet felt like they were made of concrete, each step a total drag.
"Margaret, why are you flying solo? Where's William? Isn't he supposed to be with you?" Bradley jumped up and rushed over, looking all worried.
Margaret stopped for a sec, then said with a stone-cold face, "He ain't coming."
"What?" Bradley was floored.
Bradley wanted to grill Margaret about it, but she just breezed past him like he wasn't even there. Everyone around could tell something was off with Margaret and started buzzing, "What's the deal?"
"Why's Ms. Scott rolling solo? Where's Mr. Fisher?"
"Did Mr. Fisher bail at the last minute?"
With everyone staring, Margaret climbed the stairs and hit the stage. The emcee was getting ready and rushed over when he saw her. "Ms. Scott, the engagement ceremony hasn't kicked off yet. You can chill for a bit."
Margaret totally ignored him and snatched the mic from his hand. With a focused look, she cleared her throat, took a deep breath, and said loud and clear, "Tonight's engagement ceremony is off."
Margaret's words hit everyone like a ton of bricks. It was out of nowhere, no heads-up.
All the guests stared at Margaret in shock, whispering and gossiping, "Why did Margaret pull the plug on the engagement? Is she just being dramatic?"
"Maybe she got dumped?"
"Yeah, right. In high society, they care about status. No way Mr. Fisher was serious about getting engaged to someone like her."
Margaret tuned out the chatter below.
Lucy couldn't hide her glee. She glanced at Grace next to her. "Is Margaret nuts?"
Grace chimed in, "Who knows? Maybe Mr. Fisher saw her true colors and ditched her."
Lucy beamed, "Yeah, that's it. William finally saw through that shameless witch. Awesome!"
"Lucy, I told you, Mr. Fisher was just messing with her. No way he was serious about getting engaged. Now you can chill," Grace kept buttering her up.
Lucy nodded, looking pleased.
Meanwhile, the reporters, buzzing with excitement, swarmed in. The president of the Fisher Group having his engagement canned at the last minute was juicy news!
"Ms. Scott, why did you call off the engagement?"
"Ms. Scott, does Mr. Fisher know about your sudden announcement? Was this your call or his?"
"Ms. Scott, did you cancel because of issues between you and Mr. Fisher?"
Questions flew at Margaret from all sides. Margaret smirked a bit, "Sorry, no interviews. Tonight's engagement is off. You can all leave."
When William rolled up to the entrance of the Sunset Haven Retreat banquet hall, this was the scene he walked into.
Margaret, the woman he was head over heels for, was rocking that red dress he picked out for her, making her look like a total knockout. She was absolutely stunning, a real showstopper.
But then she dropped the bomb. "Tonight's engagement is off."
Just like that, with one cold sentence, she nixed their engagement.
William was floored. He'd busted his butt to throw Margaret a killer engagement party, pulling it all together in just eight days. Everything was handpicked to suit her tastes, only the best for her.
He'd been counting down to tonight, dreaming of sharing their joy with everyone. He even had a special gift he made himself, ready to blow her mind and make her the happiest woman alive.
He'd ditched Marjorie, floored it all the way, and even ran two red lights just to get to Margaret ASAP.
So why did she pull the plug on their engagement in front of everyone, just like that? Why was she so cold, canceling without even giving him a heads-up?
"Mr. Fisher, Mr. Fisher is here!" Someone spotted William at the entrance, his face like a glacier, and shouted in surprise.
Reporters swarmed him, shoving mics in his face.
"Mr. Fisher, did you know Ms. Scott was gonna cancel the engagement?"
"Mr. Fisher, can you tell us..."
Before the reporter could finish, William, eyes blazing and face dead serious, snapped, "Get out!"
His vibe was so intense, the reporters backed off, stunned into silence.
With a stormy look, William marched towards Margaret. A chill filled the air, and Margaret frowned, locking eyes with William without flinching.
She thought, 'So he ditched Marjorie to come back? Is he pissed because I beat him to the punch? Now everyone knows I dumped him. Is his pride hurt, and that's why he's so mad? Shouldn't he be happy? I called it off, so he can be with Marjorie openly. Plus, he won't look like a player. What's he so mad about?'
Watching him close in, Margaret smirked sarcastically. Before she could say anything, he grabbed her wrist with a vice-like grip.
"You..." Before she could react, William yanked her into the backstage lounge, pinning her against the wall.
"William, let go of me!" Margaret struggled, but he held her tight.
William didn't budge, his hands clamped on her wrists, staring down at her. His lips were a tight line, his deep eyes burning with an anger she couldn't fathom.
After what felt like forever, he swallowed, trying to keep his cool, and asked in a rough voice, "Margaret, why?"
