Chapter 54 Encountering an Old Friend at the Restaurant
With William's stern look and no-nonsense tone, Margaret finally gave in with a sigh. "Alright, you're the boss. Your call."
She was working for the Fisher Group now, and William was the head honcho. If the boss said jump, she had to ask how high. That’s just how it rolled in the corporate world.
Leaving the CEO's office, Margaret dialed up Samuel to let him know she had to bail on their plans.
Samuel sounded bummed. "Didn't we just agree to hang out? What gives?"
"Sorry, something urgent came up. I'll make it up to you next time," Margaret said, feeling a bit defeated. If it weren't for that nasty William, she wouldn't be stuck with this last-minute overtime.
Back at her desk, Margaret got down to business, tweaking the project proposal.
She'd barely made a dent when her phone buzzed again. It was William.
"What's up?" Margaret answered, trying to keep her cool.
William's deep voice came through. "Didn't you say you were gonna show me the minutes? I've been waiting for half an hour."
Seriously? Half an hour and he was already on her case?
Did this guy ever chill?
Margaret grumbled to herself and replied, "I haven't finished organizing it yet."
"Is this your idea of work efficiency?" William's voice was icy and impatient.
Margaret took a deep breath. "Once I'm done, I'll bring you the meeting minutes and the revised proposal together."
"Fine," William said, his lips a thin line.
Quitting time rolled around, but Margaret was still neck-deep in work.
After finally getting the meeting minutes and proposal in shape, she felt ready and headed to the CEO's office.
"All set?" William looked up as she walked in, his face unreadable.
Margaret nodded, walked over, and handed him the documents.
William skimmed the meeting minutes and said flatly, "Aren't you gonna walk me through this?"
"I've laid it all out. The meeting was about the mass production of 'Ice and Fire' and the next steps," Margaret explained each point.
This guy was definitely messing with her. She remembered a few days ago when Lucy brought him a plan. He didn't even glance at it, just told her to leave it.
Why did he need her to break down every single detail? Was he still salty about that accidental kick yesterday?
Talk about holding a grudge.
Margaret kept wondering as she explained.
After finally getting through the meeting minutes, she opened the proposal, ready to dive in when William cut her off.
"Have you had dinner?" William asked, his face blank.
"No," Margaret shook her head. She'd been swamped all afternoon and hadn't had a chance to eat.
William suddenly stood up, looked down at her, and said, "Let's go."
Margaret blinked, surprised. "Where to?"
"To grab dinner, obviously," William said, like it was the most natural thing in the world.
This chick worked so hard she didn't even look after herself.
With that, William grabbed his suit jacket and strode out.
Margaret hustled to keep up. "You're buying?"
"Obviously," William grumbled.
Margaret eyed him suspiciously. "Why the sudden generosity?"
William stopped, glanced back, and said, "You think I'm a heartless boss?"
Margaret wanted to say yes, but when she met William's cold, intense gaze, she bit her tongue.
William drove them to a swanky restaurant.
"Mr. Fisher, right this way," the manager greeted him like he was royalty.
William had his own private room here. Sometimes, when he worked late, he'd swing by for a bite, and occasionally he'd bring clients.
But this was the first time he brought a girl.
The manager couldn't help but give Margaret a once-over. She was tall, with sun-kissed skin, bright eyes, and a killer smile. She was a knockout.
Seeing the manager ogling Margaret, William shot him a frosty glare. The manager quickly looked away, flustered.
"Mr. Fisher, please follow me," the manager said, leading them to the top floor.
As the elevator doors opened and Margaret stepped out, she saw a tall, familiar figure.
Lyle Pennington?
He was the top male star at Starlight Entertainment and one of her admirers.
What was he doing here?
Margaret's eyes widened in surprise, but before she could say anything, William's smooth voice cut in.
"Lyle, what a coincidence."
Lyle's handsome face lit up with a smile. He looked deeply at Margaret, then turned to William and nodded. "Yeah, what a coincidence."
"Aren't you supposed to be filming abroad? When did you get back?" William asked coolly.
The Pennington and Fisher families used to be neighbors. Lyle was William's childhood buddy, and they were tight.
The Pennington family was big in entertainment and film. Two years ago, Lyle jumped into the industry. His good looks and noble, slightly brooding vibe made him a hit, especially with the ladies. He blew up fast.
In the past two years, his career skyrocketed, bagging major awards and becoming a top-tier actor.
"Just got back," Lyle said, his eyes drifting back to Margaret.
William frowned and said, "Let me introduce you. This is Margaret, my fiancée."
"Fiancée?" A mix of surprise and confusion flashed across Lyle's face.
So, the rumors were true?
Margaret was really William's fiancée?
William then introduced Lyle. "This is my friend Lyle."
Margaret nodded and smiled slightly. "I've heard a lot about you."
Her face stayed calm, but inside, Margaret was freaking out.
Wasn't Lyle supposed to be filming abroad?
Why was he back all of a sudden?
Judging by William's greeting, they seemed pretty tight.
Would Lyle spill the beans to William?
Would her cover get blown again?
