Chapter 20: The Perfect Plan
"Is that so?" Margaret asked with a raised eyebrow.
It seemed that Lucy had set a trap to frame her for stealing. She was curious to see how Lucy would carry out this false accusation.
"What exactly is going on?" Victor asked with a frown.
He didn't really believe that William's fiancée would steal, but his granddaughter's words were very certain, and someone had seen it with their own eyes, so he couldn't help but believe it.
"Here's the thing: just now, when Lucy was showing us her diamond ring, Margaret happened to walk by. She seemed to fancy the ring a lot and stared at it for a long time," Grace stepped forward and said with a serious tone.
Margaret looked displeased.
When had she even shown such interest in that ring?
She didn't care for such a small diamond ring at all, let alone stare at it. The cabinet full of diamond rings that Xavier had given her was far more dazzling and expensive than this one!
Grace paused for a moment and continued, "Then we went to dance, and Lucy took off the ring and put it in her bag. But after we finished dancing, the ring was gone."
"Yes, then we started looking for it in the banquet hall and met this waiter. She said she saw someone take my ring, and that person was Margaret!" Lucy added, trying to contain her excitement.
Lucy was extremely pleased with herself. Everything was falling into place just as she had planned. Margaret wouldn’t have any defense against this accusation. Once her reputation was shattered and she was branded a thief, how could William ever marry her?
When William broke off the engagement with Margaret, Lucy could finally take her rightful place as his wife.
Margaret watched Lucy and Grace's performance with a cold smile, her sharp eyes fixed on the waiter. "Did you see me take Lucy's ring with your own eyes?"
The waiter quickly lowered her eyes, not daring to meet Margaret's gaze, but nodded and said softly, "Yes, I saw it with my own eyes."
"Don't be afraid; just tell the truth!" Grace gave the waiter a look.
The waiter understood and said, "Just now, I went to the restroom and saw Miss Scott holding the ring and putting it on her finger. When she saw me, she hurriedly hid it in her handbag."
"Margaret, hurry up and return the ring to Lucy! You've disgraced the Fisher family!" Daisy shouted angrily.
"Daisy, don't be angry. What does this have to do with the Fisher family?" Abigail quickly tried to comfort her.
She then glared at Margaret. "This country bumpkin has nothing to do with the Fisher family. William would never marry a thief."
Abigail's words fueled the crowd’s suspicions, and whispers of gossip began to ripple through the room.
Margaret's eyes hardened as she faced the group, a cold smile curling at the corners of her lips. The situation was escalating, the atmosphere growing tenser with each passing moment.
"In that case, please return the ring, Miss Scott, and I'll let this go," Victor said with a grim face.
It was embarrassing that such a thing was unfolding at his birthday party, especially with the alleged thief being William's supposed fiancée.
Margaret's patience was wearing thin. She wanted to end this quickly. "I told you, it wasn't me."
"If it wasn't you, just open your handbag and prove it." Lucy stepped forward to block Margaret as she tried to leave.
Several security guards, seeing Victor wave his hand, surrounded Margaret.
Seeing this, Margaret frowned. It seemed she wouldn't be able to leave without resolving this matter.
After thinking for a moment, Margaret handed her handbag to Lucy. "If you want to check it so badly, be my guest."
Lucy took Margaret's handbag, a barely noticeable gleam of triumph flashed in her eyes, which Margaret caught.
Lucy handed the handbag to the head of security. "Open it and check."
The head of security, not daring to be careless, carefully took the handbag and unzipped it.
The next second, there was a gasp from the crowd. "She stole it!"
Lucy's shiny diamond ring was lying right there in Margaret's handbag!
