Chapter 279 Play Along

"Seriously?" William's icy stare cut right through Grace. His intense vibe made her feel like she was about to buckle at the knees.

Grace took a step back, sucked in a deep breath, and forced herself to say, "Mr. Fisher, I'm telling the truth. If you don't believe me, ask them. The reporters here saw everything."

"Did you?" William turned to Margaret, his voice flat.

"Nope," Margaret said, arms crossed, looking at Grace with a smirk.

"Alright, I believe you," William said, and Grace's eyes nearly popped out of her head.

Everyone had seen Margaret and Lyle looking all messed up in that room, but William didn't even question it. He just believed her.

Seeing Margaret's cool and collected vibe, Grace got a bad feeling in her gut. She clenched her fists, feeling the anxiety creep in. She was sure the waitress had taken Margaret's phone; there was no way Margaret could've called William.

Margaret's eyes were cold, and she could see the panic in Grace's eyes. Her phone was taken, but she saw this coming. She played along to draw out the mastermind.

When she was about to get out of William's car, she spotted Lucy's car parked nearby.

Margaret knew Lucy had it out for her. So, she told William that if he didn't hear from her in half an hour, he should come over. And just like she thought, everything went down exactly as planned.

Grace realized she had walked right into a trap.

Just as Grace was about to say something, the restaurant manager who came in with William stepped up, cleared his throat, and said, "Ms. Thomas, I heard you wanted to check the surveillance footage to prove your innocence. Well, here you go."

"I've got it right here," He said, pulling out a USB drive and plugging it into the TV in the lounge.

The footage started playing on the big screen. The main stars of the video were the two waitresses who had poured drinks for Margaret and Lyle.

They took the wine and drink bottles to the kitchen, emptied, washed, and refilled them, and then brought them back to the lounge.

Everyone watched and started murmuring,

"Didn't think the drinks were actually tampered with!"

"So these two swapped the drinks earlier, no wonder there was no issue when they drank."

"Looks like we really wronged Ms. Scott and Lyle!"

The two waitresses' faces went pale, not expecting their whole act to be caught on camera.

Grace was stunned. She took a deep breath and tried to play it cool. "This doesn't prove it has anything to do with me. These two waitresses drugged the drinks to harm them. I didn't know the truth, so it's normal to misunderstand."

As long as there was no solid proof, she'd stick to her story and deny everything. Margaret couldn't touch her.

Grace spoke while shooting a smug look at Margaret. She thought bringing William would be a game-changer, but it turned out to be a dud.

The two waitresses looked at Grace, eyes wide with fear, and she shot them a death glare.

They got the message and quickly started bawling, "Sorry, Ms. Scott, we did this out of jealousy! We wanted to ruin your and Lyle's reputation!"

Lyle frowned. "Margaret and I don't even know you. Isn't that a bit of a stretch?"

"Who put you up to this?" Margaret stood up, her voice ice-cold.

"No one told us to do it," the waitresses stammered, backing away from Margaret's fierce vibe.

They exchanged a look, then one of them blurted out, "We're fans of Donald. Lyle, you've always outshined him and took his Best Actor award. We thought if we ruined you, our idol would get his chance!"

Lyle frowned. Donald Martin was a rival actor from another company, always scheming behind the scenes. But this excuse was just too weak.

"Well, now that the truth's out, I'll be going. Mr. Fisher, sorry for the misunderstanding," Grace said, trying to keep her cool. Her perfect plan to trash Margaret's rep had flopped again.

Grace was bound to get a scolding from Lucy. But right now, she needed to get out of there fast.

Seeing Grace ready to bolt, Margaret smirked and stepped in her way. "Ms. Thomas, hold up. We're not done here."

Grace had tried to drug her; no way was Margaret letting her off easy.

Margaret glanced at her watch, looking bored.

Grace's face tightened, but she forced a smile. "Ms. Scott, I messed up. My bad. I apologize. I have important stuff to do, so I'll be leaving now."

She tried to push past Margaret and head for the door. But before she could get there, Anthony walked in with a bunch of cops.

Grace was blocked and had to step back.

'What the hell? Why is Anthony here? And why are there so many cops?' Grace's palms were sweaty with nerves.

Last time, when Mia tried to frame Margaret and got busted, it was Anthony who helped expose her. Grace guessed Margaret really had some dirt on her.

Grace looked at Margaret, feeling guilty, and when their eyes met, Margaret's cold stare made her shiver.

"Mr. Fisher, we got a report about someone drugging others here. We brought the forensic team to check it out," the cop said to William, all respectful.

"Okay," William replied, cool as ever.

Anthony walked over to Margaret. "How's it going? Ms. Scott, hope I'm not too late."

"Thanks, Anthony," Margaret said, smiling.

Her cold eyes locked onto Grace. "Ms. Thomas, since you claim you didn't know, why not cooperate with the cops? If you're innocent, it'll clear your name, right?"
