Chapter 460 Birthday Banquet

"Yeah, sounds awesome." Mia nodded with a triumphant glint in her eyes as she turned away. Oh, Margaret, no matter how hard you try to keep things under wraps, I always find out what I need to know.

Tomorrow, I'll spill the beans to Susan, and then the real fun begins.

At the villa.

Margaret glanced at her phone; it was a location message from Michelle. She looked over at William sitting next to her and said, "Michelle just texted me. There's a birthday dinner tomorrow at 8 PM. It's at a small villa in the suburbs. I've been there with her once."

William hesitated, thinking that if he agreed to go, Margaret might get jealous, given her current mood. Better to avoid the drama and keep things simple.

He nodded, "I'm not feeling the dinner tomorrow. I'm not that close with Michelle. Why don't you go solo?"

Margaret looked at William for a moment, a slight smile playing on her lips. She thought she could guess what William was thinking.

Even though seeing Michelle tomorrow might be a bit of a hassle, it's probably for the best.

"Alright, I'll be back a little late. I'll call you then."

At 8 PM, Michelle's birthday dinner.

To make Michelle happy, David had thrown a lavish party. All the kids who had grown up around Michelle's family and were on good terms with her were invited. But Michelle only exchanged a few pleasantries with them, her eyes constantly darting toward the door.

She was waiting for William.

About half an hour later, Margaret arrived at the suburban villa. As she entered, Michelle's eyes lit up, but she didn't see anyone else besides Margaret.

[Did William not come?]

Michelle couldn't help but feel a bit let down, the smile fading from her eyes as she looked down.

Margaret immediately noticed Michelle's downcast mood. She sighed softly and, pretending not to know anything, walked over to her, handing her a gift bag. "What's up? It's your birthday, why the long face? Here, this is your birthday gift."

Hearing Margaret's voice, Michelle looked up, feeling even more conflicted. She glanced at the gift bag in Margaret's hand, knowing she couldn't refuse it.

"Thanks, you always know what I like. I'm just a bit tired, that's all." She forced a smile, trying to hide her feelings.

Zane, a friend of Michelle's, was weaving through the crowd with two glasses of champagne. He was about to join Michelle for a drink when he noticed Margaret standing next to her.

Zane's eyes widened.

He swore he had never seen such a beautiful and gentle girl before. The feeling of being struck by Cupid's arrow was something he truly understood today.

[This beautiful Miss doesn't have a date with her.]

Zane thought for a moment, a smile playing on his lips as he walked over with the champagne. Michelle glanced at him but said nothing, while Margaret looked puzzled, assuming he was there for Michelle and started to leave.

"Hey there, beautiful," Zane called out just as Margaret was about to turn away, offering her a glass of champagne. "Would you do me the honor of a dance?"

"Me?" Margaret pointed to herself, a bit taken aback. Michelle glanced between them, about to say something, but decided against it.

Oh well, let her have a little fun for once.

[It's just a dance, no harm in that.]

Margaret thought for a moment, noticing Zane's hopeful expression. It seemed rude to turn him down flat, and besides, she wasn't at home, so why not?

She nodded, "Sure, but I'm not exactly a pro. Hope I don't step on your toes."

Zane grinned as she agreed, saying smoothly, "No worries, dancing with someone as lovely as you is a privilege."

Margaret followed Zane to the center of the room, placing her hand on his shoulder as the music started. Zane held her waist, moving in close, his eyes fixed on her face as he complimented her.

"Didn't expect you to be such a great dancer. You were being modest."

"Just a bit of practice," Margaret smiled, keeping the conversation light, eager to wrap up the dance.

What she didn't anticipate was that among the guests was a journalist from back home, who snapped a picture of her dancing with Zane and quickly turned it into a trending topic online.

William was at home, waiting for Margaret and casually scrolling through his phone when he stumbled upon the trending post about Margaret and Zane. Clicking on it, he saw the photos, and his mood darkened, especially at how close Zane was to Margaret.

What was she doing?

Feeling increasingly uneasy, William put down his phone, grabbed his coat, and headed out. He needed to see for himself who this guy was.

As the dinner wound down, Margaret and Zane had long finished their dance and returned to the lounge area. Zane, however, kept trailing Margaret, peppering her with questions. Although Margaret felt a bit uncomfortable, she remained polite and answered them all.

When Margaret finally found Michelle to say she was leaving, Zane couldn't hold back any longer and asked, "It was awesome meeting you today. Could I get your number or some way to keep in touch? We could chat sometime."

By then, Margaret had reached the door.

She turned slightly, looking at Zane's hopeful face, and smiled politely, "I'm sorry, I'm just here on a business trip. As for contact info, I'm not comfortable with that, so it's probably not necessary. Sorry."

Zane was about to say more when a voice called out from a distance, "Margaret!"

It was William, striding over quickly.

He had seen the guy from the photos talking to Margaret and was burning with jealousy.
