Chapter 143 Trapped in the Water

Out on the big ol' ocean, there was zero cell signal. Margaret wasn't sure if the necklace Xavier gave her could send out a distress signal.

"It totally will," William said, giving her a confident look with a slight eyebrow raise.

William had never seen a gadget like that before. He thought, 'Wasn't Margaret's grandpa just some old dude from the sticks? How'd he get his hands on this high-tech stuff?'

William's deep eyes showed a flicker of curiosity. His fiancée was full of surprises.

But since Margaret didn't spill the beans, he wasn't gonna pry. He liked her for who she was, not her background or family ties.

As they got closer to the water, Margaret spotted a few islands in the distance. She felt a rush of excitement and was about to tell William when he spoke up. "Margaret, you see those islands over there?"

"Yeah," Margaret nodded. "I was just about to tell you."

William chuckled and whispered in her ear, "Guess we have a telepathic connection, huh?"

Then, he gently nibbled on her earlobe.

A shiver ran through her body. Margaret blushed. 'This guy, even now, he's still so flirty.'

"Cut it out," she said, turning her face away to look at the islands. If there was fresh water there, they had a shot. But she had no clue how long it would take to swim there. Would the food William brought last until they made it? Could Xavier really pick up her signal and come to the rescue?

Margaret was lost in thought when she heard William's low voice. "Can you swim?"

"Yeah," Margaret nodded.

William pulled a life jacket from his backpack and carefully put it on her. "In a bit, we'll swim together to those islands."

"Okay," Margaret replied softly, hoping they'd get lucky and find a passing ship to rescue them.

They slowly descended, getting closer to the water. The ocean stretched out forever, waves crashing and roaring with the sea breeze.

Margaret's heart was pounding. She could swim, sure, but the ocean was a whole different beast.

"We're about to hit the water, hold your breath." William timed it right, untied the rope binding them, and tied their life jackets together.

Holding hands tight, they both plunged into the sea. Margaret swallowed a few mouthfuls of salty water, the taste making her gag.

"Margaret, you okay?" William asked, worried.

"I'm good, what about you?" The waves stung a bit, and she grabbed William's arm.

William hugged her and kissed her forehead. "I'm fine. Listen, we'll swim together to the islands."

With that, William let go of Margaret and, with a smooth leap, started swimming towards the islands.

The cut on his arm started to throb again.

A few days back, he got hurt by Annie while protecting Margaret. The wound had started to scab and heal, but now it was reopening in the salty water.

William furrowed his brows and pushed the pain down. Right now, he was Margaret's rock, her solid support. He couldn't show any weakness. He didn't want Margaret to worry.

Margaret followed close behind, and they swam with all they had. But the waves were getting bigger, making it harder to move forward.

Margaret looked up at the distant islands and freaked out when she saw they seemed to be getting farther away. She panicked, "William, we seem to be drifting away from the islands."

William noticed it too. They were swimming against the wind. Despite his best efforts, the waves were pushing them away from the islands.

William thought for a moment and said, "Let's stop for now and save our energy. We'll swim towards the islands once the wind dies down."

Margaret agreed. "Yeah, that's all we can do."

They stopped swimming and clung tightly to each other. Luckily, they had life jackets, so they wouldn't sink even if they didn't swim, just drift with the waves. The waves roared and the wind howled, but Margaret gritted her teeth and held on.

Wave after wave crashed over them. William held her tightly. "Margaret, don't be scared, just hang in there a bit longer."

"I'm not scared." Margaret felt a surge of emotion. With William by her side, she felt strangely calm. No matter how big the storm, she wasn't afraid.

After a while, the wind and waves began to calm down.

"Drink some water to keep your strength up." William took a bottle of water from his backpack and handed it to Margaret. "Once the wind stops, we'll swim towards the islands."

"Okay." Margaret drank a few sips and handed the bottle back to William.

William put the bottle back in his backpack. Margaret was surprised. "Aren't you gonna drink?"

William said calmly, "I'm not thirsty."

In the vast ocean, fresh water was life. Even if they reached the islands, there might not be fresh water. So, the few bottles of water they had were precious. William wanted to save as much as possible for Margaret.

Margaret knew William wasn't really not thirsty and felt very warm inside.

Night fell, and a crescent moon hung in the sky. The bright moonlight cast a soft glow on the vast ocean, making the blue water sparkle and the waves ripple beautifully.

Margaret thought, 'If we weren't in danger, it would be so romantic to be with my loved one on the sea.'

"Margaret, the wind has calmed down. Let's swim towards the islands," William said, snapping Margaret out of her thoughts.

The islands were faintly visible. If they didn't swim now, they might face another storm.

"Okay, let's hurry," Margaret, feeling energized after drinking water, turned and accidentally touched William's wound.

William winced in pain.
