Chapter 19: Lucy's Framing

No?

So, the girl from his childhood wasn't Margaret.

William's eyes darkened, and his handsome face couldn't hide his disappointment.

Margaret pursed her lips, feeling somewhat baffled.

What did he mean? Did he wish she had been kidnapped?

They remained silent all the way home. When they arrived at home, Daisy handed William an invitation, saying, "Don't forget. Victor's seventieth birthday party is this weekend."

Victor Clark's birthday party was to be held at the most luxurious Royal Palace Hotel in Ravenford, and the grand event would be attended by the social elite.

Margaret had no interest in such parties, but on the day of the birthday party, she was rudely woken up early by Daisy.

Daisy glared at Margaret with a cold face and shot her a warning, "Don't embarrass the Fisher family!"

The party was lively and bustling, but Margaret found it incredibly boring. She glanced at the crowd, where the much-admired William stood in the spotlight. Feeling disconnected, she got up to get some fresh air on the terrace.

Before she could get far, she was blocked by a group of people—Lucy and her friends.

Lucy extended her hand, showing off a sparkling diamond ring on her fair finger, making her look even more elegant and noble.

She deliberately glanced at Margaret, a smug smile on her lips, "See this? It's a limited edition by the famous Ada. My grandpa got it for me at a Paris auction for my birthday last year."

"It's so beautiful!" Lucy's friends kept complimenting her. "Only you, Lucy, deserve such a noble ring."

How boring.

Margaret glanced at the diamond ring. It was beautiful, but the diamond was small, far inferior to the one Xavier had given her.

"Please move aside," Margaret said and walked past them without looking back.

Behind her, she heard Lucy and her friends' disdainful voices. "A country bumpkin will always be a country bumpkin!"

Margaret stayed on the terrace for a while. When she returned to the hall, a uniformed waiter pointed at her and shouted, "It's her! I saw her in the act just now!"

Margaret paused. Why was this person pointing at her for no reason?

Hearing this, Lucy quickly walked up to Margaret and demanded, "Margaret, so it was you who stole my diamond ring?"

Stole her diamond ring?

Margaret frowned and looked at her. "What diamond ring?"

Lucy's friends gathered around and started accusing Margaret.

"Who would have thought? Mr. Fisher's fiancée is actually a thief."

"Fiancée? She's just a country bumpkin. She probably has never seen such a precious diamond ring in her life. Couldn't afford it, so she stole it."

"Lucy, don't be polite with her. Just call the police!"

Margaret finally understood what was going on—they were trying to frame her for theft.

She glanced at Lucy's hand; the diamond ring was indeed gone.

"What's going on?" Victor, hearing the commotion, walked over with his cane.

"Grandpa, you have to stand up for me." Lucy clung to Victor's arm, glaring at Margaret. "Margaret stole the diamond ring you gave me."

Victor patted Lucy's shoulder reassuringly and then squinted at Margaret. "Did you take Lucy's diamond ring?"

Margaret calmly smiled. "No."

Victor frowned. "A diamond ring is no big deal. But it's Lucy's favorite. If you like it, Miss Scott, I'll get you a better one another day. For now, please return it to Lucy."

Margaret was speechless. "I didn't take it; she's framing me!"

"Margaret, have you no shame? Someone saw you take it, and you're still denying it?" Grace Thomas, one of Lucy's friends, exclaimed, her voice dripping with accusation. She grabbed the arm of a nearby waiter, the same one who had pointed at Margaret earlier, and pushed the waiter forward as if to validate her claim.
