Chapter 401 The Mantis Stalks the Cicada, Unaware of the Oriole Behind
Jack's phone buzzed a few times. He glanced at the screen and saw several photos pop up. He opened them one by one, confirming they were the North Bay project plans. Satisfied, he nodded.
He turned to Angel, who instinctively flinched, looking at Jack with fear, unsure of what he might do next.
But Jack just chuckled, patting her cheek lightly. "You should've given this to me earlier. Be smarter next time and don't think you can outsmart me with your little tricks."
"Alright, you can go now. Remember, don't let William find out, or I won't need to remind you what happens then, right?"
Angel was a bundle of nerves, her heart nearly leaping out of her chest from the recent scare. She nodded quickly, took a few deep breaths, and got out of the car. Watching the car drive away, she still felt cold and clammy, her back drenched in sweat.
Jack stayed in the car, staring at the photos of the project plans on his phone, a confident smile spreading across his face.
William, you always think you have everything under control, don't you?
Let's see how you compete with me this time!
Jack closed the photo app and dialed a number he had just seen. When the call connected, he said, "Hey, this is Jack from BPL."
"Mr. Phillips, hello, hello, hello," came a sycophantic voice from the other end.
Jack raised an eyebrow, glancing out the window at the passing street scenes. "I heard you're the supplier for the North Bay amusement park project for the Fisher Group, right? Got time today to meet up? I have a business proposition for you."
Angel was a nervous wreck on her way back to the apartment, feeling increasingly uneasy. By the time she reached the entrance to the complex, she had an urge to run away.
She kept replaying the scene of William catching her in the study that day.
What if Jack does something to William? What if William finds out she stole the project plans?
Angel didn't even remember how she got inside. Her palms were sweaty, and it was all cold sweat.
William wasn't in the living room.
Angel let out a sigh of relief, tiptoeing into the room, only to find the study door half-open. William was sitting at the desk, holding the very project plans she had found that day.
Angel froze, her heart racing. She forced herself to calm down and gently knocked on the door.
"William."
"Marjorie." William looked up and smiled when he saw her, motioning for Angel to come over. "Did you try on the ring? How did it go?"
Seeing no change in William's demeanor, Angel relaxed a bit. She nestled beside him, saying sweetly, "I did. The ring is beautiful and fits perfectly. Next time, can you come with me?"
"Sure." William's hand caressed her shoulder. "I've been busy with a project at work. Once it's done, I'll take a few days off to spend with you."
"Okay."
Angel beamed, her anxiety fading. She looked up at William and tentatively asked, "William, since we're getting engaged, when are you gonna take me to Fisher Manor to meet your grandfather? We need his blessing for our wedding, and he should pick a good date for us. Otherwise, I'd seem so inconsiderate."
Her voice grew softer, but she couldn't help but sneak a glance at William's expression.
She was clearly trying to advance by retreating.
The head of the Fisher family was Bradley. Without his approval, she could forget about truly marrying into the family. Angel knew this well.
She didn't mind currying favor with an old man.
William paused, patting her shoulder reassuringly. "Grandpa is old and just got out of the hospital. He's resting at Fisher Manor and doesn't want to be disturbed. We shouldn't go. Besides, I've already set the date for our engagement ceremony. It's on the 18th of this month, just a few days away. You can take your time planning everything."
"The 18th?" Angel wasn't too concerned about meeting Bradley. Hearing the date, her eyes lit up.
Seeing William nod, her smile grew wider. She affectionately linked her arm with his. "Then I must plan it well. It's our most important day!"
"Whatever you want." William smiled indulgently. "Alright, I have some work to finish. Why don't you watch some TV or gossip shows? I'll join you when I'm done."
At the restaurant, Jack walked out of the private room, followed by a sharp-looking man in his thirties, smiling broadly.
This was York, the supplier Jack had contacted earlier for the Fisher Group's amusement park project.
York smiled meaningfully. "Mr. Phillips, rest assured. As long as BPL shows sincerity, I'll handle everything perfectly for you."
Jack shook York's hand politely. As York left, Jack's face showed a confident, cunning smile.
If the North Bay amusement park was built with substandard materials, any incident would spell disaster for the Fisher Group and William in Ravenford.
Then BPL would get everything it wanted effortlessly.
In the afternoon, William arrived at the office on time to handle documents and attend a video conference.
After the meeting, he closed his eyes, pinched the bridge of his nose, and leaned back in his chair to rest. He heard a knock on the door and responded briefly, "Come in."
Peter Cox walked in, approaching the desk. "Mr. Fisher, just as you thought, York has informed me. Jack has started to make his move."
William smiled, his eyes sharp as a hawk's. He knew about Angel stealing the plans and had let it happen to bait Jack.
"Good. Keep an eye on Jack. Report any of his actions to me." William's face showed a confident, cold smile.
After Peter Cox left, William turned to look at the clouds drifting outside the window, murmuring, "The show is about to begin."
