Chapter 146 After the Calamity
The faint scent on his lips was just like he remembered from when he was a kid.
William was burning up, his mind all foggy. All he knew was that the woman's lips in front of him felt like a cool drink of water, super refreshing and comfy. Without thinking, he reached out, grabbed Margaret, and pulled her closer.
So soft, so cool, so damn comfortable.
William just wanted more.
Margaret didn't see it coming. She lost her balance and fell right into his arms. Feeling his grip, Margaret felt a rush of happiness. Looked like giving him water and cooling him down was working.
"William, William, wake up," Margaret whispered in his ear, her cheek pressed against his. "You promised you'd chase me, love me, and protect me forever. You can't break that promise."
Her gentle voice reached William's ears, and his handsome brows furrowed. 'Who's calling me? That familiar, gentle voice... Marjorie? Margaret? Marjorie? Margaret?'
Margaret's face started to blur with Marjorie's in his mind.
Why did he always feel like Margaret was Marjorie?
William slowly opened his eyes, and the woman's face in front of him came into focus. He gave a weak smile and said, "Margaret."
"William, you're awake?" Margaret's eyes lit up with surprise.
"Yeah." William nodded, struggling a bit. "What happened to me?"
Why did his whole body feel like it had been through a meat grinder, all sore and weak?
"You got hurt, your wound got infected, and you had a high fever," Margaret said, looking worried.
William took a few deep breaths, and his memory started coming back.
His plane had crashed. He and Margaret had fallen into the sea, faced storms, and then some big, scary fish. He vaguely remembered telling Margaret to leave him behind.
"Margaret, you saved me?" William looked around and realized he was lying on a beach, feeling a wave of relief.
Margaret gave a small smile. "You've saved me so many times, I just saved you once. I still owe you big time."
William held her hand and said softly, "Then you gotta marry me to pay me back."
The heat made Margaret's breath catch, and she glanced at William. She thought, 'This guy, barely out of the woods and already flirting. How did I not know he was this shameless before?'
Seeing Margaret stay quiet, William tightened his grip on her hand. "Don't forget you promised me, you can't back out now."
Margaret smiled a bit, "Yeah, I promised. I won't back out. But first, we need to find a safe spot."
William was awake now, and he seemed a bit better. Margaret's anxious heart eased a little.
William's fever was mainly because his wound got soaked in seawater, causing an infection. Just cooling him down wasn't enough. Now the sun was blazing down on the beach. Even a healthy person couldn't handle it, let alone William with his high fever.
The biggest problem was she had no medicine, which was really worrying.
After mulling it over, she had a lightbulb moment. For now, she had to find a safe spot for William and then scout the island for any herbs to bring down his fever.
Back in the day, when she was living in the sticks, she learned a thing or two about medicine from an old doc, so she knew her way around herbs.
"William, can you walk?" Margaret asked, eyeing the woods. She needed to find herbs but didn't want to leave him alone.
William tried to get up but struggled big time. Margaret quickly moved to support him. William leaned heavily on her, his right hand draped over her shoulder, hanging in front of her chest. Accidentally, his big hand brushed against her soft chest. The electric jolt made Margaret's face flush.
She paused, glared at him, and said, "Can't you behave?"
William chuckled. "Feeling shy?"
Margaret pursed her lips and changed the subject. "Watch your step, be careful."
After a lot of effort, Margaret helped William to a big tree. The tree's leaves provided shade, and it was pretty quiet around.
Margaret carefully helped William sit down and lean against the trunk.
"William, rest here for a bit. I'll go look for some herbs nearby," Margaret said.
"Okay." William nodded weakly. Actually, he was already feeling a bit better now. William had always been in good shape, and with Margaret's care, he was in a better mood.
To avoid getting lost, Margaret made marks along the way. Walking quickly, she suddenly heard some faint sounds.
'What's that noise? Could it be dangerous?' Margaret cautiously stopped and listened.
It was the sound of running water! There was a water source nearby!
Margaret happily followed the sound, and soon, a small stream appeared in front of her. She quickly walked to the stream, squatted down, and scooped up water with her hands, drinking it in big gulps.
After drinking a lot, she felt much better. Margaret stood up and saw a few fruit trees on the other side of the stream, full of orange fruits that looked like tangerines. She quickly walked around the stream, picked a fruit, and smelled it carefully.
It seemed like tangerines. Margaret peeled one and tasted it. It was sweet and sour, really tasty.
Looked like she got lucky. She found both water and tangerines, so surviving on the island wouldn't be too hard.
Margaret quickly picked a few tangerines. Worried about William, she followed the marks back. Along the way, she kept an eye out for herbs, but no luck. It didn't dampen her spirits; the tangerines would at least help replenish his energy for now.
Following the marks, Margaret returned to the big tree. But there was no one under the tree. William was gone!
Margaret's heart skipped a beat. William was so badly hurt that even standing was tough. How could he just disappear? Did something happen to him?
"William!" she called out, running toward where she had left him. Her voice shook as she shouted, "William, where are you?"
