Chapter 28: Margaret, Thank You

Suddenly, Margaret slightly bowed and said, "Excuse me, I need to step out for a moment."

"Where are you going?" William asked with a slight frown, his tone somewhat displeased. "Dinner is about to be served."

What could be so important for Margaret that she had to leave now?

"I have something urgent to attend to." Margaret stood up and walked straight towards the door.

She dialed the veterinarian's number and asked, "Hello, this is Margaret. How is the puppy I brought in last time?"

The doctor's voice came from the other end. "It has fully recovered."

Margaret nodded. "I'll come to pick it up now."

The photo of the dog that was taken with Bradley resembled the stray she had saved, particularly the dog's collar.

It was almost certainly the same dog. After learning from William that Bradley was rather connected to Dolly, she made the quick decision to give it back to him.

Seeing Margaret leave suddenly, Daisy was very displeased. "What's Margaret doing? She has no manners at all."

Lucy chimed in, "Exactly. Does she expect everyone to wait for her to eat?"

William glanced at Bradley and said in a clear voice, "There's an urgent matter at the company that she needs to handle."

Although William was unaware of the reason behind Margaret's hasty departure, he had an innate fear of others criticizing her, particularly Daisy.

"What could be so important? More important than your grandfather?" Daisy raised her voice a bit. "People from the countryside have no manners. Lucy, on the other hand, is much better, well-educated, and graceful."

Hearing Daisy's praise, Lucy looked pleased and pretended to be shy. "You're too kind."

Bradley's face darkened. "Margaret rushed to the company as soon as she heard there was an issue. She's responsible, and that's commendable."

Daisy fell silent when Bradley spoke, but Lucy's jealousy grew stronger. Envy and bitterness churned within her as she bit her lip in frustration.

Why did Bradley hold that country bumpkin Margaret in such high regard?

How could he not see that she, with her appearance and background, was clearly superior?

Why couldn't Bradley recognize and value her instead?

Thinking this, Lucy concealed her emotions and pretended to be worried. "However, she ought to have at least let us know when she would return. All of us, especially Mr. Fisher, who is in poor health and cannot afford to go hungry, cannot wait for her."

"We'll start eating first," William said, his brows slightly furrowed, his lips showing a hint of coldness.

He could see through Daisy's intentions in bringing Lucy today.

Even though his relationship with Margaret was merely contractual, for some reason, deep down, he refused to let anyone speak ill of her.

"James, let's start dinner," Bradley said.

"Yes, sir," James responded respectfully and instructed the kitchen to bring out the food.

"Sir, have a drumstick," Lucy said eagerly, handing Bradley a drumstick.

Bradley responded indifferently but didn't eat it.

Lucy felt a bit awkward and turned to look at William.

Today, William wore a white shirt with a slightly loosened blue checkered tie and rolled-up sleeves, giving him a more relaxed look than his usual meticulous appearance. His handsome features still carried a cold, distant aura.

At that moment, his slender hand was peeling a shrimp—elegant, noble, and impeccably perfect. Even in such a simple act, he exuded a natural dominance and regal presence.

Lucy's eyes couldn't help but betray a hint of infatuation.

Why wouldn't William, whom she had loved for so many years, look at her?

Lucy quickly peeled a large shrimp and placed it in William's bowl, her voice gentle. "William, try the shrimp I peeled for you."

William moved the bowl aside, his expression cold. "No, thank you. I'm not used to eating food peeled by others."

In that instant, the shrimp fell onto the table and then rolled to the floor.

Lucy was stunned. As the eldest daughter of the Clark family, she had humbled herself to peel shrimp for William.

But he had outright rejected her.

She felt extremely wronged. "William, I peeled it, especially for you."

"Yes, Lucy meant well," Daisy chimed in.

William's lips, with a hint of indifference, pressed together. Just as he was about to say something, he caught sight of a familiar and beautiful figure out of the corner of his eye.

William's lips softened a bit, and he raised an eyebrow. "Margaret."

Following William's gaze, Lucy saw Margaret quickly walking back with a white puppy in her arms and couldn't help but scream, "Margaret, why did you bring a dog here? We're eating!"

Margaret didn't have time to respond before Dolly, in her arms, started struggling to jump down.

"Look at you, so eager." Margaret smiled, bent down, and let go. Dolly immediately ran forward, jumped onto Bradley's lap, and affectionately nuzzled him.

"Dolly!" Bradley's eyes lit up, his hands trembling with excitement as he looked at the puppy in disbelief. "Dolly, is it really you!"

Dolly barked loudly as if responding to Bradley.

"It's good to have you back," Bradley said, stroking Dolly, his eyes glistening with tears.

The long-lost Dolly had finally come home!

"Margaret, where did you find Dolly?" William's inquisitive gaze fell on Margaret.

So, she had hurried off earlier to find Dolly.

But Margaret had only seen Dolly in a photo for the first time today. How could she have found it so quickly?

He had so many questions in his mind.

Margaret had run all the way back and was a bit out of breath.

She took a few deep breaths and smiled. "Do you remember a few days ago when I was late and almost got fired by Ella?"

William nodded.

That time, Margaret called him to apply for leave, saying she had something to do. Later, Ella made a fuss in the CEO's office, insisting that Margaret be fired for absenteeism. In the end, he stepped in and made Ella apologize to Margaret.

"That morning, Olivia's car almost hit Dolly. I took Dolly to the vet, which caused the delay," Margaret explained.

So that was what happened.

But Margaret hadn't known that Dolly was Bradley's lost dog at the time.

So, she had delayed her work to save a stray dog and had even been misunderstood.

Such kindness was truly rare.

William looked at Margaret contemplatively and sincerely said, "Margaret, thank you."
