Chapter 423 Unless It Was Never Done in the First Place
After the cop mentioned the name, everyone except Margaret, William, and Jack stared at the once pitiful woman in shock.
Angel's heart turned icy, and her face darkened. She never thought the scars she'd hidden for over a decade would be exposed so brutally in such a setting.
She had thought she was about to find happiness.
Angel fell silent, lost in her memories.
Years ago, after Angel's stepmother left the Tang family, she was a lonely child with no one to care for her. The police sent her to the town's orphanage.
There were a lot of kids there.
At first, Angel thought she would make new friends. After all, she didn't feel there was much to miss about her old home.
But once the other kids learned about her background, they didn't want to play with her, even though they were also unwanted kids. They talked behind her back and openly bullied her.
Angel remembered one time in class when she returned to her seat and opened her pencil case, only to find a fat caterpillar inside.
Startled, she screamed. It was recess, and the classroom was full of students who all turned to look at her with strange expressions.
There was confusion, misunderstanding, and mockery... but no kindness.
A few seven or eight-year-old boys clapped and laughed, making faces at Angel, their eyes full of ridicule.
One taller boy openly said, "Your dad's in jail! He's a criminal, and the daughter of a criminal deserves this! We heard your dad kidnapped someone, so you must be bad too!"
Most of the class joined in, some just for fun, others to watch the drama. Angel initially fought back, but it only led to harsher punishments from the teachers and more severe bullying from the boys.
Over time, Angel learned to endure, no matter how angry she got.
From that moment, she vowed to rise above and make those who looked down on her pay, to show them who Angel really was.
One day, she was called to the director's office, where a well-dressed man was waiting for her.
"Yes," the director said with a smile, "This gentleman wants to adopt you. He's from Aurorania. If you go with him, you'll have a new home. Are you happy?"
Angel was silent for a long time, tilting her head to look at the refined man. Finally, she asked, "Will it be better than now?"
The man was taken aback, then smiled, "Of course, it will be a thousand times better. Just come home with me, and I promise your life will improve."
"Okay." Without hesitation, Angel nodded. She desperately wanted to leave that place.
After that, Angel left the orphanage. The man took her to Aurorania, where she met Jack and learned who her real benefactor was.
Margaret watched Angel, who stood there silent and still, lost in her thoughts. But whatever Angel was thinking or wanted to say, it couldn't change the current situation.
Margaret smiled slightly, pulled a recorder from her pocket, and pressed play. Jack and Angel's voices filled the room.
Angel finally reacted, instinctively reaching for the recorder, but Margaret raised her hand first and addressed the crowd.
"Now we have both witnesses and evidence. Everyone heard it, right? Angel isn't Marjorie at all. Her identity is completely fake! And she's been in contact with Jack for a long time. If I'm not mistaken, Angel, you were actually adopted by the Phillips family from the orphanage, right?"
"You're lying!" Angel's eyes blazed with rage, her voice shaking. Even now, she tried to deny it.
"It's not true! None of it is true. You're lying. It was you—"
"Really?" Margaret looked at her with amusement. "If I'm lying, why are you so anxious? Or are you afraid that if I keep talking, everyone will find out that you leaked the Fisher Group's bid to BPL during the North Bay project?"
"You..."
Angel stood frozen, as if nailed to the spot, while the room fell silent, unable to process the overwhelming information.
"Do you want to know how I found out?"
Margaret casually threw out the question, staring into Angel's eyes. "If you don't want others to know your mistakes, you shouldn't have made them in the first place."
"Now everyone knows, right? Angel was sent by Jack to get close to William, to steal the Fisher Group's trade secrets so BPL could take over the Fisher Group!"
Margaret's voice was calm but firm.
Angel's heart sank. She pressed her lips tightly, searching for words to explain everything.
"You have no proof. How can you say I approached him just to steal secrets? Do you have proof I leaked information to BPL? Do you?"
Margaret sighed, snapped her fingers, and picked up a remote. She pressed play, and the screen showed footage from William's study. Angel's face turned pale, unable to speak.
"See? You went to William's study to steal the North Bay amusement park plans for Jack. If you were really Marjorie, why would you do that?"
The room was eerily quiet, with murmurs growing louder. People pointed at Angel, their eyes filled with disgust and disdain.
Angel looked around in shock, shaking her head, but finally, she collapsed on the stage, crying and admitting.
"Yes, I did it. I did it all. But William, William..." She reached for William's coat, desperate. "I did it for you. I wanted to be with you. And I didn't give the plans to Jack. You have to believe me. Believe me."
