Chapter 145 Life and Death Together
"What the heck are you talking about?" Margaret couldn't help but freak out after hearing William's words.
William glanced at the island. They were getting closer, but it was still a ways off. He was totally wiped out and couldn't swim any further, only dragging Margaret down with him.
He didn't want to be dead weight.
William frowned a bit and started untying the life jackets that bound them together. "Margaret, I'm beat. I need a break. You swim ahead and wait for me on the island."
Margaret knew exactly what William was thinking. She grabbed his big hand. "No way, we swim together."
"I'll just slow you down," William said, looking deep into Margaret's eyes, his gaze full of tenderness and gratitude.
The woman he loved was sticking by his side, and he was happy. Even if he were to bite the dust in the vast ocean, he wouldn't regret it.
Margaret took a deep breath. "I'm not scared of being slowed down. Since I gave you my word, I'll do my best. I won't leave you behind. This time, let me protect you! We'll always be together, live together, die together!"
Margaret's tone was rock solid. After all, William got hurt saving her. He had risked his life for her time and again; how could she possibly ditch him when he was seriously injured?
Margaret grabbed William with one hand and paddled like crazy with the other, gritting her teeth to keep going. "William, you gotta hang in there!"
Margaret gave it her all and finally got closer to the island bit by bit. The island grew larger and larger before her eyes.
Margaret panted heavily and glanced back at William. "William, we're almost there. Just hang on a bit longer!"
William groaned. He felt utterly miserable, but his remaining consciousness told him he couldn't give up. Margaret was deeply devoted to him, willing to live and die with him. He couldn't let her down.
Using the last bit of her strength, Margaret finally brought William to the island. When her feet touched solid ground again, Margaret let out a long sigh of relief, "William, we're here!"
Gritting her teeth, she helped William ashore, collapsing from exhaustion herself. She looked at William with concern. His handsome face was unusually pale, his eyes closed, breathing rapid, and he was out cold.
Margaret's eyes were filled with pain. She carefully placed her fingers on William's right wrist; his hand was burning hot.
William was weak and powerless, likely due to an infected wound and prolonged exposure to seawater, causing a high fever and unconsciousness.
"William, you'll be okay. I will save you!" Margaret tightly held William's hand and gently kissed it.
She took a bottle of mineral water from William's backpack, sat on the ground, and supported his head against her chest. She unscrewed the bottle cap with one hand. "William, drink some water first."
But William remained unconscious, showing no signs of movement.
"William, wake up!" Margaret, suppressing the pain in her heart, raised her voice, calling his name.
No matter how much Margaret called, William didn't budge.
"William, come on, drink some water." Margaret poured a bit of mineral water into the bottle cap, gently pried open William's lips, and poured the water in.
But William stayed out cold, and the water just dribbled out of his mouth.
Margaret frowned, took a sip of water herself, and without a second thought, leaned down to William's lips.
His lips, even in his unconscious state, felt warm and inviting. The sensation of his burning hot lips sent a shiver through her, making her own lips tingle and her cheeks flush.
But now wasn't the time to think about that. Margaret took a deep breath, held it, and firmly fixed William's head with both hands, feeding him all the mineral water from her mouth.
William unconsciously sighed, trying to spit out the water, but Margaret's lips tightly sealed his.
His Adam's apple moved, and he finally swallowed the water.
Margaret let out a long breath, ignoring her shyness, and repeated the process several times to get William to drink.
Margaret found a towel in William's backpack, soaked it in water, and placed it on his forehead to cool him down.
After doing all this, she looked around the island. The area near the sea was a beach. Further inland, there was a lush forest.
Margaret smiled slightly. Since there were plants, there must be fresh water, enough for her and William to survive. But she wondered if there were any wild animals on the island.
Thinking about the big fish they encountered in the sea, Margaret felt a lingering fear. If William hadn't risked his life to protect her, she might have been the one gravely injured.
Looking at the still unconscious man before her, Margaret was about to cry. She told herself to be strong. At this moment, she had to face everything with strength. William was still waiting for her to save him. Moreover, she had sent a distress signal to Xavier. Maybe Xavier was already on his way.
Margaret touched her neck and realized her necklace was missing! It must have been lost during the chaos with the big fish!
Margaret felt a wave of regret. Now she couldn't send another distress signal to Xavier, updating their location.
Just as Margaret was feeling regretful, William's weak voice interrupted her thoughts. "Water."
Margaret's heart skipped a beat. "William, you're awake?" She looked down with a hint of joy at the man in her arms.
But to her disappointment, William was still unconscious, only muttering instinctively.
"William, you will be okay!" Margaret silently prayed in her heart, took a sip of water, and leaned down to William's lips.
Their lips met, and in his daze, William felt a cool sensation. His tightly furrowed brows relaxed a bit, and his breathing steadied.
He greedily sucked on the coolness of Margaret's lips, the familiar feeling that had always lingered in his mind once again enveloping William. "Marjorie, is that you?"
