Chapter 23: Apologize to Me
"Since you stole it, how did my ring end up in Margaret's bag?" Lucy hurriedly distanced herself and questioned.
"I was going to take the ring home with me after my shift, but Miss Clark noticed it was missing and called security instantly. I panicked and hid the ring in Miss Scott's bag," the waiter said, her voice shaking.
The waiter's face turned even more pale. "Please forgive me, I really didn't mean to. My mom is very sick and urgently needs money for surgery. That's why I gave in to a moment of greed."
"Who instructed you to do this?" Margaret furrowed her brow and asked sternly.
"No one instructed me; I stole it myself." The waiter's voice trembled slightly, and her fearful gaze was fixed on Lucy.
Lucy, afraid the waiter would reveal the truth, bit her lip. "Forget it. Since the ring has been found, considering your filial piety. I won't pursue this matter any further."
"Thank you, Miss Clark, thank you, Miss Clark." The waiter apologized to Lucy while repeatedly bowing.
"Not pursue it? When Lucy was sure I stole the ring, she wasn't so forgiving," Margaret said calmly.
"Since the ring has been returned to its owner and Lucy said she won't pursue it, let's call it a day," seeing Lucy at a loss for words after Margaret's retort, Victor, leaning on his cane, patted Lucy's shoulder.
Lucy quickly waved her hand, signaling the chief to take the waiter away. She took the ring and turned to leave.
"Wait a minute." Margaret stepped forward, blocking Lucy's path.
How could Margaret let her leave just like that?
Margaret wasn't one to allow herself to be bullied just like that.
"What do you want?" Lucy looked at Margaret warily.
Margaret smiled with a hint of disdain. "You don't plan to leave just like that, do you? You all wrongfully accused me of stealing the ring and wanted to take me to the police station. Now that the truth is out, shouldn't you apologize to me?"
"You!" Lucy was momentarily speechless.
'Apologize to Margaret, this country bumpkin, in front of so many people? Dream on,' Lucy seethed inwardly.
"Apologize to Margaret."
A deep, cold male voice came through; it was William.
William's powerful presence made Lucy instinctively take a step back.
With her hands clenched tightly at her sides, Lucy's voice was laced with extreme reluctance. "I'm sorry, Margaret. I misunderstood you earlier."
Margaret rubbed her ear. "What did you say? I didn't hear you clearly."
Lucy suppressed her anger and raised her voice a bit, gritting her teeth. "I'm sorry!"
After delivering her reluctant apology, Lucy could no longer contain her fury and stormed off.
Victor, accustomed to handling large-scale dramas, cleared his throat and said to Margaret, "I'm really sorry. What happened earlier was a misunderstanding, and Lucy can't be blamed. Don't take it to heart."
Margaret smiled slightly. "I hope that next time something like this happens, you will thoroughly investigate and not just believe what others say and accuse someone randomly."
Margaret's words made Victor a bit embarrassed.
He forced a few laughs. "Margaret, is your hand okay? How about I have someone take you to the hospital?"
"No need, I'm tired. I'll leave first." After the night's ordeal, Margaret indeed felt a bit tired. She yawned, picked up her handbag, and turned to leave.
Just as she stepped out of the hotel, Margaret was about to hail a cab when the sky suddenly flashed with lightning and thunder, and soon it started pouring rain.
Seriously, could it get any worse?
Feeling defeated and without an umbrella, Margaret shivered as the rain pelted her. She was so close to crying.
Just as she searched for shelter, a black Bentley pulled up beside her. The door swung open, and there was William's handsome face.
His said concisely, "Get in."
Margaret was slightly stunned.
Why was William leaving, too? Wasn't he supposed to stay and enjoy the event?
Seeing Margaret in a daze, William raised an eyebrow. "Still not getting in?"
"Thank you." Margaret said, slipping into the passenger seat and quickly fastening her seatbelt, recalling the awkwardness from their last encounter.
William's Adam's apple moved slightly. His well-defined hand gripped the steering wheel tightly.
Margaret, sitting next to him, was very beautiful. The well-tailored red dress perfectly outlined her graceful figure.
And just now, drenched by the rain, the dress clung to her body, making her look both sexy and alluring.
"Where are you going?" Margaret looked out the window; this wasn't the way home.
William glanced at her. "To the hospital."
The hospital?
"Why are we going to the hospital?" Margaret was taken aback.
William frowned slightly. "Your hand is swollen and red."
So he wanted to take her to the hospital to get her hand treated.
Margaret smiled. "No need, it's just an allergy."
William's face darkened a bit. "Why use such a method to hurt yourself?"
"What else could I do? Let them falsely accuse me of being a thief?" Margaret turned slightly.
"You could have used other methods," William said coldly.
"Is there a better way?" Margaret rubbed her temples.
In that situation, Lucy had meticulously framed her, and all the evidence was against her.
Margaret had used the allergy trick to prove she hadn't touched the ring directly, as she couldn’t think of a better way to defend herself.
William looked at her deeply and said in a low voice, "You could have asked me for help."
Was that his suggestion for a better way?
Margaret was speechless.
She smiled. "Anyway, thank you."
Actually, Margaret was a bit grateful that William was willing to believe in her character, despite the circumstances.
William remained expressionless, only letting out a cold laugh from his nose.
Margaret was quite unexpected to him—calm, composed, and very smart, completely different from what he had imagined.
William took Margaret to the hospital. After the doctor examined her, he confirmed it was just an allergy and nothing serious, so he prescribed an ointment for Margaret.
Back home, Margaret and William entered the room.
"I'm going to take a shower." William took a long stride towards the bathroom.
The sound of running water soon came from the bathroom. Margaret sat on the sofa, took out the ointment the doctor had given her, and carefully applied it to her fingers.
Even though it was just an allergy, it was still a bit itchy.
After applying the ointment, Margaret stood up but accidentally bumped her head into William's chin, which was above her.
With a thud, her head hurt. Margaret looked up to see William standing in front of her.
Margaret's eyes widened in surprise. "When did you get here?"
