Chapter 86 Gossip About Margaret

Margaret whipped out her phone and jumped on Twitter, only to see a trending topic blowing up: #Fisher Group Employee: Murder Suspect Assaults Victim’s Relative.

The post was loaded with pics and text, accusing Margaret and showing pictures from earlier today, with Ashley on the ground.

But in reality, Ashley had grabbed Margaret first, and Margaret had just given her a light push, making Ashley plop down and start bawling.

In this trending mess, Ashley looked like the victim. And Margaret was painted as the evil witch who pushed Ella into the lake and beat up Ashley.

The comments were brutal, tearing Margaret apart.

Staring at her phone for a bit, Margaret furrowed her brows. This whole thing smelled fishy.

The public opinion was clear: they wanted to nail her for murder, riling up clueless folks to bash her online, with a bunch of rumor-spreaders stirring the pot. And Ashley was just a regular middle-aged woman, no way she had this kind of pull.

There had to be some big players behind this trying to take her down.

Margaret's lips twisted into a sarcastic smile, and her phone suddenly rang. She picked up, and Anthony's voice came through. "Ada, did you see the trending topic? How'd you end up in that mess?"

"Yeah, I saw it." Margaret chuckled. "Guess the more famous you get, the more crap you deal with."

"Alright, who the hell is spreading this garbage about you? I'll take care of it right now," Anthony fumed. "They wanna write trash, I'll crash their media systems!"

"No need," Margaret said coolly. "If they wanna spread rumors, let 'em."

Anthony was confused. "Ada, aren't you worried about your rep?"

Margaret sneered. "The more they trash me now, the more fun it'll be later. If they wanna play, bring it on."

Anthony thought for a moment. "You mean..."

Margaret raised an eyebrow, a sly smile on her lips. "Help me dig into Ella."

If Ella was so set on screwing her over, she must've left some dirt behind.

Anthony got it right away. "Got it, Ada. Stay tuned for some good news."

After hanging up, Margaret's eyes turned icy. She had planned to chill for these three months and then bounce, but now she was stuck in the middle of this storm. Since someone wanted to mess with her, she wasn't gonna take it lying down!

Waking up early, running around all morning, and then dealing with that drama queen Ashley, Margaret was feeling wiped. Yawning, she got up and headed to the break room for a cup of coffee.

On the way, a bunch of Fisher Group employees gave her weird looks, whispering and pointing.

"Do you think Margaret really pushed Ella into the lake?"

"Is there any doubt?"

"Didn't see that coming."

"I heard Margaret's from the sticks, those country folks can be real nasty."

Rumors and gossip were flying around, but Margaret stayed chill, strolling to the break room like it was no big deal.

She was just bending over to make some coffee when the break room door swung open. Margaret glanced up and saw a tall, imposing figure walk in—it was William.

Margaret was caught off guard. "William?"

If she remembered right, someone as high and mighty as William, the CEO, would never step foot in the break room. After all, he had assistants for stuff like coffee and water.

William casually shut the door, took a step forward, and stood right in front of her. He nodded slightly, looking down at her. "You okay?"

"Why wouldn't I be?" Margaret put down the cup, looking totally unfazed.

William was a bit taken aback. "Didn't you see the news?"

"Oh, that." Margaret smiled lightly, not bothered at all. "I didn't do it, so what's there to worry about?"

Her calmness threw William for a loop. He had figured she'd be upset and sad with all the slander and rumors flying around. So, when he saw the trending topic, he had someone take down the headline and rushed to find her, ready to offer some comfort.

He didn't expect her to be so composed. Or maybe she was just putting on a brave face?

William suddenly reached out, his big hand grabbing hers, his deep eyes full of concern. "Don't worry. I had the headline taken down and told everyone that anyone caught gossiping about you will be fired."

Margaret was speechless. She didn't need William to fight her battles.

She was hoping the headline would stay up a few more days to let the public opinion stew. Why did this guy have to meddle so much?

But, William's actions were out of concern for her. Thinking this way, Margaret felt a bit warm inside. She smiled brightly. "I'm really good."

William leaned in, his deep voice whispering, "Margaret, you're my fiancée. No matter what happens, I won't let anyone mess with you, got it?"

His warm breath on her neck made her blush. Her heart started to race, and Margaret took a few deep breaths. This weird feeling was frustrating. How could she let William get under her skin?

Margaret calmed herself, gently pushing him away. "William, don't get too into the role. We're just in a contractual relationship. Besides, I can handle this myself. No need for you to worry."

Margaret didn't like owing people anything. The more William did for her, the more she felt indebted.

Her slightly distant words hit William, his handsome face darkened, and a complex look flashed in his eyes before turning cold again.

He suddenly tightened his grip on her hand, causing her to lose her balance and fall into his arms.

William spoke softly, "Margaret, do you really only see me as a contractual fiancé?"

Wrapped in his presence, her heart started to race uncontrollably again. His deep eyes stared at her, almost magical, drawing her in.

Margaret quickly looked away, pushing him away forcefully, and coldly asked, "What else?"
