Chapter 215 A Party for Two

Lyle cruised his car up to his swanky villa halfway up the hill in the 'burbs.

"Margaret, we're here," Lyle said, killing the engine and hopping out.

Margaret slid out and trailed Lyle into the villa. The place was dead quiet; just the two of them, no one else in sight.

Margaret glanced around, a bit confused. "Lyle, isn't there supposed to be a birthday bash tonight? Why's it so quiet? Where's everyone?"

"It's just us, a party for two," Lyle said, giving her a meaningful look.

On his big day, his twenty-fifth birthday, he only wanted to hang with Margaret, the girl he was head over heels for.

Lyle's intense gaze made Margaret squirm a bit. She looked away. "Why not invite more friends for a party?"

"Not a fan of crowds," Lyle said, his voice low.

The villa's garden was decked out all romantic-like. Moonlight danced on the pool, making it sparkle.

Next to the pool was a cute little table set for two. Lyle lit the candles. In the flickering candlelight, Lyle locked eyes with Margaret. "Margaret, do you like the candlelight dinner I set up for you?"

Margaret grinned. "It's your birthday; as long as you're happy."

"I'm loving it." Lyle smiled. Celebrating his birthday with the girl he adored made Lyle's heart swell with joy.

"This is the steak I made just for you, your fave. Dig in." Lyle nudged the plate towards Margaret.

"Thanks." Margaret grabbed the knife and fork and started chowing down.

"Why aren't you eating?" Margaret asked, noticing Lyle just watching her.

"Not hungry." Lyle smiled softly. Just watching Margaret was the best thing ever for him. If he could freeze this moment forever, just staring at her, that'd be perfect.

"Hey, didn't you say you had some good news?" Margaret suddenly remembered.

Lyle nodded. "Oh, nothing big, just snagged the Best Actor award again this year."

"Congrats!" Margaret beamed.

Honestly, it was no shocker. Lyle's been killing it lately, and another Best Actor win was totally deserved.

"You're coming to the award ceremony next week, right?" Lyle's voice had a mix of hope and nerves.

"Of course." Margaret cut another piece of steak and popped it in her mouth, giving Lyle a firm nod.

Margaret was stoked for Lyle's success. Plus, she was Lyle's secret boss behind the scenes. Such a big deal definitely called for her being there.

Lyle's smile deepened. "I'm so happy to share my success with you. I've got a surprise for you then."

"Another surprise?" Margaret raised an eyebrow.

"Yep." Lyle nodded seriously. He was planning to pop the question at the award ceremony, during the biggest, most epic moment of his life, in front of everyone. With all those eyes on them, Margaret probably wouldn't say no right then and there.

Lyle was sure he'd nail it.

"This steak's bomb, you should try some too." Margaret felt a bit uneasy under Lyle's intense gaze.

Lyle snapped out of it, grabbed his knife and fork, and started digging into the steak.

After polishing off the steak, Margaret sampled some other dishes on the table. Lyle had whipped up all her favorites, and she was loving it.

"This is really good," Margaret said, giving him props.

"As long as you like it." Lyle felt a wave of satisfaction wash over him.

"Lyle, happy birthday." Margaret pulled a gift from her bag and handed it to him. She'd hit up a boutique and picked out a slick new tie.

"Thanks." Lyle took the gift with a smile.

Meanwhile, William had been tailing Lyle's car from a distance, all the way to his place. He watched as Margaret and Lyle disappeared into the villa.

Just as he was about to get out of his car, his phone buzzed. It was Angel.

"Marjorie, what's up?" William answered, sounding distracted.

"William, aren't you off work yet? I've got dinner ready, just waiting for you," Angel's sweet voice chimed in. William suddenly remembered Angel had invited him over for dinner tonight.

"Angel, something came up, maybe next time," William said, frowning.

Angel's heart sank. "William, is it work stuff? I can bring it to your office."

"I'm not at the office," William replied, his voice low.

"Then where are you? I'll bring it to you," Angel insisted.

"No need," William said, rubbing his forehead, clearly annoyed.

"William." Angel tried to say more, but William's attention was caught by a crowd gathering and rushing towards Lyle's villa.

"Angel, I gotta go, talk later." William hung up, keeping his eyes on the group.

Inside the villa, Lyle suddenly asked, "Margaret, may I have this dance?"

Margaret hesitated, then nodded. "Okay."

Lyle stood up, walked over to her, and made a grand gesture of invitation. Melodious music started playing. Margaret took his hand, and they began to waltz on the garden lawn.

The garden lights flicked on, neon colors shifting and shining on them. For some reason, Margaret's mind drifted to the time William had asked her to dance the opening dance. Back then, she and William had moved together so perfectly. Thinking about it now felt a bit ironic.

As the dance ended, Margaret was about to head back to her seat when Lyle reached out and brushed her hair. "Margaret, your hair's a bit messy."

The gesture felt a bit too intimate, and just as Margaret was about to say something, a group of people burst in through the door. There were bodyguards in black and reporters with cameras.

Leading the charge was a woman in high heels, looking fierce. It was Mia.

Margaret squinted, wondering what drama Mia was bringing this time.

"Margaret, you bitch! How dare you try to steal my fiancé again!" Mia stormed up to Margaret and raised her hand to slap her.
