Chapter 229 The Awards Ceremony
When William heard that, his face got all tight, like he was about to freeze the room with his icy vibe.
Margaret could tell he was pissed, so she was about to say something when her phone started ringing with a cheerful tune. She pulled out her phone and saw it was Lyle calling.
Ignoring William's frosty look, she answered, "Hey, Lyle."
"Hey, Margaret, you done with work? I'm outside your office," Lyle's voice came through clear as day.
"Almost. Gimme five minutes," she said, checking the time.
"Cool," Lyle replied.
After hanging up, Margaret started packing her stuff, ready to bounce as soon as the clock hit quitting time. But just as she was about to leave, William grabbed her arm.
"Margaret, don't go," he said, his face like a glacier.
Yesterday's drama had William convinced that Margaret still had feelings for him. He thought the only reason she kept pushing him away was because of Marjorie. Why else would she go all out to expose Marjorie in front of him?
Margaret had even said she broke off the engagement because of Marjorie. So, William was sure she hadn't moved on. He'd spent the whole day planning to propose to her again tonight. And now she was saying she was going to Lyle's award ceremony. He couldn't let that happen.
Margaret winced from the pain of his grip. "William, you're hurting me!"
William let go instinctively, and Margaret quickly pulled her arm back.
"I'm outta here," she said, walking out under William's icy stare.
Downstairs, Lyle's car was already parked at the entrance of the Fisher Group.
"Margaret, over here!" Lyle called out, grinning as he got out to open the door for her.
Margaret walked over. "You got here early?"
"Of course," Lyle said, giving her a meaningful look. "Tonight's a big deal for me, so I had to be early to pick you up and make sure everything rolled as my plan."
"Alright, let's go!" Margaret said, hopping into the car.
When William came downstairs, he saw Margaret leaving in Lyle's car. His lips pressed into a thin line, showing just how ticked off he was. Margaret had left with Lyle! The proposal he'd spent all day planning was a bust.
He'd gotten an invite to the award ceremony tonight but usually hated crowds, so he'd tossed it. Now, he decided he was going.
Lyle drove to a styling salon and parked. Margaret looked puzzled. "Lyle, what are we doing here?"
Lyle smiled. "Didn't I say tonight's a big deal? We gotta look the part."
Margaret looked him up and down. He was already in a sharp suit with a perfect haircut, looking like he could charm a whole crowd of girls just by standing there.
"You're already looking sharp," she joked.
Lyle's eyes locked onto hers. "I meant you."
"Me? C'mon, tonight's your night to shine. What do I need to get all dolled up for?" Margaret frowned.
"Hey, a little extra glam never hurt anyone," Lyle said, pulling her into the salon.
Half an hour later, Margaret stepped out in a jaw-dropping red gown. Lyle's eyes were practically popping out of his head. Tonight, she was gonna be the most stunning woman in the room.
The award ceremony was at the famous Sacred Grand Theater in Ravenford, kicking off at 8 PM sharp. Lyle and Margaret got there twenty minutes early and snagged front-row seats.
The place was packed with celebs, famous actors, and socialites from the entertainment world. Reporters with all kinds of cameras were already there, not wanting to miss a thing.
Margaret had just settled in when she spotted a familiar, stern figure out of the corner of her eye. She was shocked. 'William? What's he doing here? He said he wanted to take me somewhere earlier; could it be this? Nah, doesn't seem like it.'
"Margaret, what's up?" Lyle asked, noticing her glancing back a lot.
Margaret snapped out of it and shook her head. "Nothing."
At 8 PM sharp, the ceremony kicked off. The host was Bruce Howard, a big name and a buddy of Lyle's. His booming voice filled the theater. "Welcome everyone to tonight's award ceremony!"
The crowd erupted in applause as Bruce announced awards for Best Director, Best Newcomer, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, and more.
"And now, the moment we've all been waiting for!" Bruce said with excitement, "Who will take home this year's Best Actor award? It is..."
He paused for dramatic effect, then raised his voice. "Lyle Pennington! Let's give a big hand for Lyle!"
Amidst the roaring applause, Lyle stood up and made his way to the stage.
"Congrats, congrats to our Lyle," Bruce said with a grin, "Lyle's snagged the Best Actor award three years in a row now, well-deserved."
"Thanks," Lyle said, cool as a cucumber.
Bruce then asked, "Lyle, care to share your acceptance speech with us?"
Lyle nodded, his eyes locking onto Margaret. Clearing his throat, he spoke into the mic, "I'm super stoked to win the Best Actor award again. There's someone I really need to thank."
He paused. Bruce jumped in, "This person must be pretty special, right?"
"Absolutely!" Lyle said seriously, "During my lowest moments, she was the one who lifted me up and helped me get back on my feet. She's always been there, inspiring me. Without her, there'd be no Lyle Pennington today."
"So, who is she?" Bruce asked, "I'm sure everyone here is dying to know who holds such a special place in Lyle's heart."
"She is..." Lyle suddenly walked off the stage, heading straight for Margaret's seat. He stopped in front of her, his voice filled with emotion, echoing through the theater. "She is Margaret Scott!"
