Chapter 127 What Is the Truth
"Has Peter dug up anything yet?" Margaret asked, catching a glimpse of William's confident vibe.
William leaned back, his voice deep and steady, "Still on it, but I bet we'll have something soon."
Margaret nodded. "We gotta get the dirt before Jones blabs at his press conference, or we're toast."
William smirked and shot her a look. "Chill, I got this. Jones won't be strutting around for long."
That calm grin of his put Margaret at ease. The stuff she had Anthony looking into should come through soon too. Jones was in for a rough ride!
The press conference was set for two days later. Everyone was buzzing about the Fisher Group explosion, dying to know the scoop on the radioactive elements in the 'Ice and Fire' jewelry line and what went down with the explosion.
The press conference was happening in some swanky hotel in Fleurancia. Margaret got there early and snagged a spot in a quiet corner. She shot a text to Anthony.
Margaret: [You got the info I asked for?]
Anthony replied quick: [Check your email, it's all there.]
Margaret grinned.
Margaret: [Thanks, man.]
Jones, all suited up, was at the head table. Reporters swarmed him, cameras flashing like crazy.
Right at ten, the press conference kicked off. The host took the stage, his voice all dramatic. "Welcome to the Fisher Group's press conference. Let's hear from Jones Turner, the man in charge of the Fleurancia branch."
Applause broke out, and Jones stood up, waving for quiet. He cleared his throat and started. "Lately, there's been a lot of talk about the explosion at the Fisher Group's Fleurancia factory. We're here to set the record straight."
"Jones, is it true the 'Ice and Fire' jewelry had radioactive materials? How'd that stuff get in the factory?"
"Was the explosion in the raw materials warehouse really an accident?"
Reporters fired off questions like machine guns.
"Quiet down!" Jones barked. "Here's the Fisher Group's report on the incident."
Jones read from his script, sounding like a robot, "The investigation into the 'Ice and Fire' jewelry revealed that some raw materials stored in Warehouse No. 1 at the Fleurancia branch contained radioactive elements. Two disgruntled warehouse managers deliberately mixed radioactive waste into the materials, rendering the jewelry toxic. The explosion in Warehouse No. 1 occurred when one of them, smoking in a restricted area, discarded a lit cigarette, which ignited flammable substances and caused the blast. The two individuals who perished in the explosion were the same managers who tampered with the materials."
After Jones dropped his bombshell, the crowd went nuts.
"Is it really that cut and dry?"
"How convenient that those two warehouse managers just happened to die in the explosion."
"Is the Fisher Group hiding something to cover their butts?"
The place turned into a madhouse as reporters threw out their doubts.
Jones gave a sly smile and said, "Of course, it's not that simple."
The reporters perked up, eyes wide.
"Jones, what are you getting at?"
"If it wasn't an accident, then what was it?"
"Is there some hidden truth here?"
Jones' eyes went icy, and he cleared his throat. "What I just said is the Fisher Group's official line, but it's not the truth."
"Jones, are you saying the Fisher Group is lying? What's the real deal?" a reporter shot back.
"As the head of the Fisher Group's Fleurancia branch, I shouldn't be saying this, but my conscience won't let me stay quiet. I'm spilling the beans today!" Jones declared, like he was making some grand sacrifice.
Margaret watched him from her corner, her eyes narrowing.
Just as she thought, Jones was here to throw the Fisher Group under the bus. But he had no idea what he was up against with William and her.
Jones was just a puppet. Let him have his moment in the spotlight for a bit longer.
Jones, now the center of attention, started slow. "The reason the 'Ice and Fire' jewelry had radioactive elements, making people sick, is because the Fisher Group used cheap, crappy materials to save money. To hide this, they blamed the innocent warehouse managers, and the explosion in Warehouse No. 1 was a setup by the Fisher Group to destroy evidence and silence witnesses."
The room went dead silent, everyone looking at each other in shock. Could the Fisher Group, a big shot in the business world, really be that shady?
But Jones' words hit hard. After all, he was the guy in charge of the Fleurancia branch; why would he trash his own company? Could the Fisher Group really be that dirty?
Jones looked pretty pleased with himself. He scanned the room, his eyes finally locking onto Margaret in the corner. "And the masterminds behind all this are the Fisher Group's CEO William and the 'Ice and Fire' project leader Margaret!"
Suddenly, all eyes were on Margaret.
She stood up calmly, walked right up to Jones, and with a cold, sarcastic tone, said, "Jones, do you dare to stand by every word you just said?"
