Chapter 184 That is Margaret's Scarf
Angel's words even convince Juniper, who didn't have a good impression on her to begin with.
But William's face turned stormy. "Let's keep moving."
He couldn't rest because Margaret was still out there. Every second wasted meant more danger for Margaret! So, even though William was dead tired, the thought of Margaret's fate kept him going.
"Alright, here's the deal. We'll split into four groups and search in different directions," William said after thinking it over. This forest was huge, and he wasn't about to leave any spot unchecked.
"William, I'm sticking with you," Angel said, hanging onto him like glue. Deep down, she hoped they'd never find Margaret. Even if Margaret hadn't been buried by the snow, she'd probably starved by now.
William gave a slight nod. "Marjorie, it's sketchy out here. Stay close to me."
Angel felt a warm fuzzy feeling and flashed a charming smile. "William, you're so sweet to me."
The four groups headed off in different directions to look for Margaret. William led Juniper and the others down the path where Margaret was most likely to be, searching again. With Peter and the others joining in, their search got more thorough.
The sky started to get dark.
Still no sign of Margaret.
"William, I'm freaked out," Angel said, glancing around at the pitch-black surroundings and shivering as she leaned into William's arms. "Could there be wild animals?"
William's heart skipped a beat. He hadn't even thought about the possibility of Margaret running into wild animals. If she had, things would be even worse.
William's already grim face got even more serious.
"Don't worry, there are no wild animals here," said a local villager who had come with Peter to help with the search. "Just some small critters that won't bother humans."
William let out a small sigh of relief.
"But it's so dark now, and we're not getting much done. Why don't we head back to the village and come back early tomorrow?" the villager suggested.
"This guy's got a point," Angel quickly agreed. "It's pitch black, and we can't see squat. How are we supposed to find anyone? Let's rest tonight and save our energy for tomorrow."
"Keep searching, don't stop!" William's face darkened, and his tone left no room for argument. Right now, he was driven by one thought, 'I have to find Margaret, and I have to find her fast!'
With William's order, everyone went quiet. Even though Angel didn't want to, she had no choice but to follow William, trudging forward with difficulty.
The night dragged on with no results. The sun slowly rose in the east.
"The weather's cleared up!" Peter shouted excitedly.
"Awesome! With the sun out, the ice and snow will melt, and our chances of finding Margaret will go up," Juniper said with a hint of a smile.
But William's face stayed stern. Even though the weather cleared up, it was still freezing out. It'd take days for the ice and snow to melt, and Margaret didn't have enough grub to last that long.
After searching non-stop, everyone was beat, but William kept pushing.
"William, I can't go on. I'm so tired," Angel whined, clutching William's arm.
William glanced at her. "Marjorie, hang in there a bit longer. Or you can head back first."
"No, I want to stay with you." Angel shook her head, refusing.
Just then, the other three groups came back from their search.
"How'd it go?" William asked urgently, his eyes flashing.
The leaders of the three groups shook their heads. "Sorry, Mr. Fisher, we didn't find anything."
William's brows furrowed deeply. "If you didn't find anything, why aren't you still looking?"
The search team leader spoke cautiously, "Mr. Fisher, we've combed the whole mountain. You might need to prepare for the worst. Ms. Scott might already be..."
Before the leader could finish, William cut him off coldly, "No way!"
With bloodshot eyes, William shouted almost irrationally, "Let me make this clear, Margaret is fine! She must still be alive, waiting for us to rescue her! No one is allowed to give up!!"
"Mr. Fisher, we won't give up." Peter quickly stepped forward. He had never seen William so wrecked.
It was now afternoon. The sun was blazing. The wind rustled the leaves, causing the snow to fall with a soft sound.
"Margaret, Margaret! Where are you?" William called out repeatedly, each time more desperate.
'What's that red thing fluttering in the distance on the tree?' William stopped in his tracks, squinting his eyes and shielding them from the sun as he looked into the distance.
"William, what's up?" Angel asked curiously, seeing William suddenly stop.
William's heart began to race. He pointed to the red object on the tree in the distance. "Look, what is that?"
Following William's direction, Juniper saw something red tied to a tree, and it looked familiar.
"That looks like Margaret's!" Juniper said excitedly, running towards the tree.
William's expression sharpened as he sprinted towards the tree.
At the base of the tree, he saw it clearly: a red scarf tied high on the branch.
"It's Margaret's! This is Margaret's scarf!" Juniper remembered clearly that Margaret was wearing this red scarf when she went into the mountains that day! She said excitedly, "It must be a signal from Margaret for help!"
"Yes, it's a signal from Margaret!" William said, his heart filled with hopeful joy. "Since Margaret left us a signal, she must be nearby. Let's search everywhere!"
"But it doesn't look like anyone's been here," Angel said, biting her lip. "You can see everything at a glance; there's no one here. Unless they're under the snow."
