Chapter 17: Impartial Justice

"Olivia, I need to talk to Mr. Fisher." Ella glanced at the woman in red before her gaze fell on the man who was the center of attention.

Olivia?

Margaret remembered now. Olivia Smith, the head of the design department at Radiant Gems, a subsidiary of the Fisher Group.

Rumor had it that the Smith family had some ties to the Fishers, which was how Olivia had landed the department head position at such a young age.

"I'm reporting to Mr. Fisher right now. Don't you know what 'first come, first served' means?" Olivia said discontentedly.

William leaned back, his cold gaze sweeping over Margaret, frowning slightly.

Didn't Margaret call him this morning saying she had something to discuss?

Why did she look so disheveled now, and why was she being dragged here by an angry Ella?

William handed the design draft to Olivia. "Go and revise this."

"Okay, sir." Olivia nodded, took the design draft, and stood aside but did not leave.

William's face darkened. "What's the matter?"

"Mr. Fisher, Margaret skipped work today without any reason. I absolutely cannot allow someone who disregards company discipline to remain in our secretarial department," Ella accused first.

Ella had heard rumors that Margaret was just a fiancée that Bradley had forced on William.

She figured that William not only had no feelings for Margaret but also disliked her. If she could help William get rid of Margaret, William would surely look at her differently.

"She asked me for leave," William said, playing with the pen in his hand, his thin lips slightly parted.

Ella was stunned; her lips moved, but she didn't know what to say.

Didn't the rumors claim that William hated his fiancée from the countryside? Why was he speaking up for her?

"Alright, you all can leave now!" William loosened his tie, his clear voice tinged with impatience.

Ella and Olivia turned and walked towards the door. Margaret cleared her throat and said, "Ella, wait a minute!"

Ella stopped. "What?"

Margaret's gaze darkened. "Aren't you going to explain what happened last night?"

"What happened last night?" Ella's eyes flickered unnaturally as she repeated the question.

"You lied about sending me some data, making me stay late at the office, but as it turned out, there was no data to process at all." Margaret squinted her eyes. "You made me wait at the office all night on purpose. Don't you think you owe me an explanation?"

Margaret unexpectedly brought up last night's incident in front of William, causing Ella's expression to change.

She then pretended to be calm. "Margaret, what are you talking about? I just asked you to finish your work before going home. When did I say I was going to send you data? You must have misheard."

Margaret had anticipated that Ella wouldn't admit it. She calmly took out her phone and pressed a button.

Ella's voice came from the phone. "I just got a call from Mr. Price. He said there's another set of data that needs to be added. I'm bringing it to you now, so wait for me."

"You!" Ella was taken aback.

Ella didn't expect Margaret to have recorded their conversation from last night. She bit her lip, trying to refute. "Mr. Fisher, it's not like that. Don't trust her. Actually..."

Margaret interrupted with a light smile. "Ella, are you going to say that this recording is fake? That I had someone fabricate it? It's really simple. Just have an expert verify it, and we'll know if it's real or not."

Ella's face was filled with terror. Margaret had completely anticipated her excuse. What would happen to her if William really brought in an expert to verify it?

Ella opened her mouth to concoct some other excuse, but then she heard William speak in a deep voice, "Apologize to Margaret."

Margaret was surprised. She thought things wouldn't go so smoothly since Ella was a long-time Fisher Group employee and William didn't like her. If William had been biased, he could have brushed it aside. But unexpectedly, he judged fairly, showing he could distinguish right from wrong.
