Chapter 85 Made the Headlines
The next morning, Margaret hit up the police station again. She and the two cops from yesterday headed over to Lover's Lake to go over the whole mess in detail.
The cops were all business, jotting down every little thing. No way they were slacking off, not with William breathing down their necks to get to the bottom of this and clear Margaret's name.
By the time Margaret rolled back to the Fisher Group, it was almost noon. She hopped out of the car, ready to head inside, when outta nowhere, a mob of people swarmed her, looking all kinds of pissed.
"What the hell do you want?" Margaret asked, eyes narrowing. She didn't know these folks, but it was clear they had beef with her. Seriously, who did daylight ambushes anymore?
"Margaret, you murderer!" A middle-aged woman with graying hair grabbed at Margaret's clothes, yelling, "Everyone, look! She's a murderer!"
Margaret's brows knitted together. She shoved the woman off and snapped, "Who the hell are you?"
"You don't know me? You almost killed my daughter!" The woman stumbled but lunged at Margaret again, eyes red and wailing. "You heartless witch, you pushed my daughter into Lover's Lake. My poor girl is only 25, so young, and now she's in a coma in the hospital. We don't even know if she'll wake up."
Oh, so this was Ella's mom.
Margaret suddenly got it. These people were Ella's family and friends, here to stir up trouble.
"Your daughter's not even dead, and you're already wailing like a banshee?" Margaret crossed her arms, looking down at her coldly.
Her daughter was in a coma, and instead of being by her side, she was here causing a scene. How rich.
"How dare you curse my daughter?!" Ashley Lewis raised her hand to slap Margaret hard across the face. "Margaret, you shameless bitch. I'll beat you to death, you vicious murderer!"
"Are you nuts?" Margaret looked at Ashley like she was an idiot, grabbed her hand mid-swing, and shoved her away.
Ashley hit the ground with a thud, sitting there and shouting, "Everyone, look! The murderer's trying to kill again! Look at her face, don't be fooled by this killer!"
The people with Ashley started hurling insults at Margaret, even unfurling a banner that read: [Murderer Margaret! Blood for blood!]
The ruckus at the Fisher Group's entrance drew a crowd of onlookers, all pointing and whispering about Margaret.
"How could such a pretty girl be a murderer?"
"You don't know. The prettier they are, the more vicious."
"You really can't tell."
Seeing the crowd grow, Ashley amped up her act, sitting on the ground, crying, and pointing at Margaret. "Poor girl, how could you be so unlucky to meet a witch like Margaret who pushed you into the water? Margaret deserves to die, not you! If you die, I can't go on living!"
Faced with such a crazy scene, Margaret was at a loss. She shot a cold glare at Ashley. "Move aside!"
Ashley glared right back. "We're here to get justice for Ella. Everyone needs to see the real you, the murderer!"
A security guard, hearing the ruckus, came out of the Fisher Group. Seeing Margaret getting mobbed, he quickly stepped in. "Please leave immediately and stop blocking the entrance. You're disrupting the order!"
"Sir, perfect timing. This murderer tried to kill my daughter. Arrest her now!" Ashley clung to the security guard's arm.
"If you don't move, I'll call the cops." Margaret raised her phone, her voice icy. "Slandering and defaming, disrupting public order, inciting trouble. You wanna go to jail?"
Ashley's eyes flickered. "You murderer, how dare you threaten me?"
She turned to her crew. "What are you waiting for? Get revenge for Ella!"
The burly men started closing in on Margaret, and one tall guy reached out to grab her. Margaret tensed, ready to fight back, when a cold male voice cut through the chaos, "Let her go!"
Margaret looked up to see William striding towards her.
William's presence was so commanding, his cold aura making everyone want to back off. The crowd automatically parted to make way. Even Ashley, who had been all loud and dramatic, went silent in fear.
William stopped in front of Margaret, gently taking her hand, his eyes unusually soft. "You okay?"
Feeling the warmth of William's hand, Margaret's heart warmed. She shook her head. "I'm good."
Peter, who was right behind William, frowned and said coldly, "Who are these idiots causing a scene here?"
Ashley trembled and said, "Margaret pushed my daughter into the water. She's a murderer."
Peter's eyes flashed with disgust. "How dare you slander Margaret?"
He turned to the security guard. "Get rid of them."
William held Margaret's hand and led her into the Fisher Group. "Why didn't you call me when this happened?"
If he hadn't seen it from upstairs and come down in time, wouldn't Margaret have been bullied by these crazies?
Margaret smiled faintly. "I can handle small stuff like this myself."
William nodded slightly, leaned closer, and whispered, "Don't take everything on yourself. Next time, tell me. I won't let anyone mess with you."
Margaret blushed for no reason. "I'm going to work."
With that, she quickly walked towards the secretary's office.
Watching Margaret's almost fleeing back, William smirked. Her shy look was really something.
Margaret got back to her desk and received some promotional samples from the photographer. She opened them one by one, checking them out carefully. The indoor photos from last time turned out pretty good, and Margaret was satisfied.
Just as she was deep into her work, Mabel, who sat next to her, suddenly exclaimed, "Oh my God, Margaret, is this you? You're in the headlines!"
