Chapter 55 Don't Be So Cruel to Me

"We're off to our room." William noticed Lyle's eyes glued to Margaret and felt a weird twinge of annoyance. After a quick nod to Lyle, he whisked Margaret into the private room.

Margaret plopped down and casually asked, "So, that Lyle guy, you know him?"

William shrugged, "Yeah, childhood neighbor."

"Y'all close?" Margaret pushed.

William's eyes narrowed. "Why, you into him or something?"

"Of course not," Margaret shot back quickly. "It's just, my friend’s a big fan. Thought maybe you could snag an autograph for her sometime."

"Is that right?" William smirked, not really buying it.

"Yeah," Margaret nodded, feeling a bit guilty.

She had nothing going on with Samuel, but William kept harping on her to watch her step. If he found out Lyle had chased her for two years, who knew what he'd do?

"What do you wanna eat?" William handed her the menu, his voice cool and calm.

"I'm good with whatever. You pick." Margaret, still thinking about Lyle, pushed the menu back to William.

William's long fingers grabbed the menu, and he rattled off a bunch of dishes without missing a beat.

Margaret blinked in surprise. These were all her favorites, and over half of them were spicy.

If she remembered right, William wasn't into spicy food. She'd never seen him touch the stuff.

"You like spicy food now?" Margaret asked, confused. "Your hand's hurt; you should eat something mild."

William's lips curled up slightly. "I don't like it."

"Then why..." Margaret looked at the table full of spicy dishes, puzzled.

"I ordered them for you," William raised an eyebrow, a half-smile on his face. "So no one can say I'm a heartless boss who doesn't care about his employees."

Margaret stayed quiet, not touching her favorite dishes. She couldn't stop thinking about Lyle's sudden return. Could something be up at Starlight Entertainment? Nah, she'd know if something was going down.

"Excuse me, I need to hit the restroom." Margaret stood up, feeling a bit of a stomach ache.

William just nodded, his brows furrowing.

Something was definitely off with Margaret, especially with her constantly bringing up Lyle.

Margaret had just reached the restroom door when she saw a tall figure standing there—it was Lyle.

Lyle, rocking sunglasses, leaned against the wall, a cigarette between his fingers, the tip glowing now and then.

Through the swirling smoke, his handsome face looked kinda sad.

As soon as he saw Margaret, Lyle put out the cigarette.

Because Margaret hated the smell of smoke.

"Margaret, why are you dodging me? Why don't you answer my calls? Or reply to my emails?" Lyle's eyes had a hint of sadness as he stared at her.

"No, I've just been swamped lately, haven't checked my emails," Margaret smiled.

She didn't need to look to know what the emails said.

Over the past two years, Lyle had sent her countless love letters.

But she just didn't feel the same way.

To Margaret, Lyle was a solid work buddy and a good friend, but he was never gonna be her guy.

He just wasn't her type.

"Really?" Lyle's eyes darkened.

Margaret quickly nodded, smiling. "Aren't you supposed to be abroad? What brings you back? Business or personal?"

"If I didn't come back, you'd end up as someone else's wife," Lyle straightened up, his voice soft.

Looking at the girl he'd loved for two whole years, Lyle's heart raced.

Two years ago, the Pennington family hit a financial rough patch, and their entertainment company was on the brink. Lyle was also in a slump.

That's when he met Margaret by chance.

Back then, Margaret was still studying at Fleurancia. She had a thing for the entertainment biz and invested in the Pennington family, setting up Starlight Entertainment.

On the surface, Lyle was the boss and top actor of Starlight Entertainment.

Only a few top execs knew Margaret was the real boss behind the scenes.

Margaret pushed Lyle to pull the Pennington family out of trouble and get back on track. She also encouraged him to act and hooked him up with tons of resources, making him a top actor.

Thinking about all this, Lyle's heart, deeply in love with Margaret, beat faster.

He stepped closer to Margaret, his deep eyes locking onto hers. "Margaret, are you really engaged to William?"

Margaret sighed softly, unsure how to explain to Lyle. She'd already told him they weren't right for each other.

But Lyle didn't listen and kept doing his thing. "You may not love me, but you can't stop me from loving you."

Margaret thought for a moment, choosing her words carefully. "This is kinda complicated and can't be explained quickly. How about we set a time to talk it over?"

"I just need one answer. Are you really engaged to William?" Lyle insisted.

"Yes," Margaret pressed her lips together and answered.

Even though she and William were only in a three-month contract, at this moment, she was indeed William's fiancée.

So, it wasn't really deceiving Lyle.

She didn't want to give Lyle any false hope. Since Lyle and William were good friends, he should let go, right?

Margaret's words hit Lyle hard. "Why? Is he better than me?"

"It's not about being better or not, but about being right for each other." Thinking for a moment, Margaret said seriously, "Lyle, I've told you before, we're not a match."

"No, that's not true!" Lyle's handsome face showed indescribable bitterness. He suddenly grabbed Margaret's shoulders. "Margaret, give me a chance, okay? I will definitely do better than William. I will prove that I'm the one for you!"

"Lyle, let go of me!" Margaret struggled, but Lyle held on tighter.

"Margaret, don't be so cruel to me, okay?" Lyle's voice trembled slightly.

Margaret forcefully shook off Lyle, angrily saying, "Why don't you get it?"

William had been waiting in the private room for a while, but Margaret hadn't come back. He got up and headed to the restroom. From a distance, he saw Margaret and Lyle together, looking way too close for comfort.
