Chapter 134 You Reap What You Sow
When Erica thought about the canceled wedding, she was so angry that she couldn't sleep at night.
Everything had been going smoothly until a series of unexpected events occurred, ultimately leading to the cancellation of the engagement.
Austin raised an eyebrow. "What reason?"
"Aaron told me you agreed to perform surgery on Grandma Maria, and it wasn't because of me!"
Austin coughed and nodded. "That's right, it wasn't because of you."
Erica looked over in disbelief after hearing that answer. "Austin, what nonsense are you talking about? Did you perform the surgery because of Aaron and not because of me? You always hated Aaron."
"Yes."
"If it wasn't because of me, then who was it for?"
Erica had investigated for so long but found nothing. Everything seemed so strange.
Austin's expression was incredibly calm. "Erica, some things are not worth dwelling on too much. But let me remind you, lies can only deceive for a while, not for a lifetime. Your lies ruined this engagement!"
"Austin, I did lie, but you still haven't told me why you agreed to perform surgery on Grandma Maria. Who was it for?" Erica inquired.
Austin replied, "Erica, you shouldn’t be asking me about this. You should leave."
Tears moistened her eyes, leaving Erica with a slight redness around her eyes. "Austin, are you and Edward hiding something from me? Edward even wants me to sign an adoption termination agreement. We've been a family for so many years, why do you suddenly want to drive me away?"
Austin fell silent for a moment. He had intended to tell Erica this before the engagement, but a series of unforeseen events had unfolded, forcing him to set the matter aside for the time being.
Austin looked at Erica. "I have nothing to say."
After saying that, Austin left the office.
Erica stood there in a daze, feeling that something was very wrong, but she couldn't figure out what it was.
At this moment, a nurse walked over and handed Erica some ice in a flattering manner. "Applying this might help."
"Thank you."
Erica took the ice and placed it on her face, wiping her tears in embarrassment.
The nurse beside her said, "Are you Doctor Jones's sister?"
Erica replied in a phony feeble voice. "Yes, I had a fight with my brother. Lately, I feel like he has changed a lot."
"Erica, I think it might have something to do with your brother being in love," the nurse said.
Erica was surprised." My brother is in love? Why didn't I know that?"
The nurse whispered, "A girl who's staying in the ward downstairs often comes to see Doctor Jones. Yesterday, that girl was brought back by helicopter. I heard she was kidnapped."
When Erica heard the word 'kidnapped,' she suddenly thought of something. "Is that girl named Susanna?"
"I think that's her name," the nurse replied.
Erica suddenly felt her mind go blank. She calmed herself for a while and then looked at the nurse. "You said Susanna often comes to see Austin?"
"Yes, Austin is also very good to this girl. Austin is very popular in the hospital, but I've never seen him pay much attention to any girl, except for Susanna."
Erica suddenly seemed to grasp something. She turned on her heel and headed downstairs, resolute in her determination to uncover the truth.
Erica walked quietly to Susanna's ward. The door was closed, but she could see through the glass on the door--- Austin was standing in front of Susanna, talking to her and peeling a banana for her.
Erica had a sudden epiphany when she saw that. It all made sense now. Susanna's newfound arrogance and disregard for her family's relocation threat finally clicked in Erica's mind. She now understood the reason behind it all.
Susanna had hooked up with Justin and was now also involved with Austin!
'Did Austin refuse to tell me why he performed surgery on Grandma Maria because of Susanna?' Erica finally understood everything.
It turned out that all of this had been caused by Susanna!
'That wretch, how dare she seduce my brother to climb up the social ladder? No way!' Erica yelled inwardly.
Erica wanted to push the door open and expose Susanna's true colors herself, but she decided to give up.
If she rushed in now, Susanna would definitely defend herself.
She needed to come up with a foolproof plan to expose Susanna's true nature once and for all.
Inside the ward, Susanna suddenly looked outside.
Austin followed her gaze. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing, maybe I was mistaken."
Susanna felt like there was someone outside, but maybe someone had just been passing by.
Austin handed the fruit to her. "Susanna, when you got in trouble, Aaron did lend a hand, but his demeanor toward you seemed a bit off," he remarked.
Susanna's expression became somewhat unnatural when she heard that. "Austin, he helped me because of Grandma Maria. She has always been good to me. If he didn't assist me in a time of need, Grandma Maria would definitely blame him," she explained.
"Is that the only reason?"
Susanna nodded. "Yes, what else could it be?"
'There is no way Aaron still had any feelings for me. That is impossible! He is eager to divorce me and be done with me once and for all,' Susanna thought to herself.
Austin felt somewhat relieved when he saw that Susanna didn't seem to have any romantic feelings for Aaron. It was better for her to be a bit cautious in matters of the heart; that way, she wouldn't be easily deceived by men.
Susanna uttered, "Austin, I want to go home tonight. I don't want to stay in the hospital."
"Alright, it'll be good for you to rest at home. If you feel sick, call me anytime," Austin replied.
Susanna nodded, and soon she was discharged and went home.
Austin escorted her out of the hospital.
Erica watched from a nearby corner as Austin saw Susanna off to the car, her eyes turning much colder. "Susanna, you are a good liar."
Erica's assistant chimed in, "Susanna probably met Austin because of Justin."
"I know, you don't need to tell me. That bitch Susanna only knows how to rely on men. This time, I'll make sure she pays."
Erica already had a plan in mind.
Meanwhile, after getting into the car, Susanna suddenly sneezed and wondered if she was catching a cold.
She didn't think much of it and took a taxi home.
Madison cried when she saw her return. "Susanna, it's all my fault. I let them scheme and bully you. They even went so far as to kidnap you."
Susanna hugged Madison. "I'm fine. Now that my brothers are around, nothing will happen to me."
Madison said, "Susanna, we must make them pay this time, so they won't keep harming you in the future."
"I know."
Susanna was a bit surprised to hear Madison say that, as she had always been kind and had endured the bullying from her adoptive parents for a long time.
"Susanna, I've made some nourishing soup for you. Drink up to replenish your strength. You must have been through a lot these past few days," Madison said, offering her the bowl.
Susanna obediently drank a bowl of soup, since she had a little baby in her belly.
After she finished, Edward and Aviana arrived. Edward said, "Susanna, we have something to tell you."
