Chapter 141 The Siblings' Unease
Susanna looked up and saw Aaron standing not far away, his gaze sullen. Her breath hitched for a moment. Why was Aaron here?
Of all times, if Austin saw Aaron, there would definitely be trouble.
Susanna's mind raced. She quickly grabbed Austin's arm to prevent him from turning around and seeing Aaron standing in the hallway. Thinking quickly, she said, "Austin, there's something I almost forgot to ask. How is Grandma Maria? Why are you the one doing the check-up for her today?"
Austin was caught off guard by the question and felt a bit uneasy. "Well, I mentioned before that the surgery for the Grandma Maria is quite complex, so I'll be involved in it. A major surgery like this requires a lot of doctors working together to handle any unexpected situations immediately."
Susanna vaguely recalled Austin mentioning this before, so it seemed reasonable for him to be here. Austin's expression was a bit guilty as he coughed and said, "Susanna, you reminded me that I have a meeting to attend to discuss Grandma Maria's surgery procedure."
Susanna watched as Austin turned to leave, feeling extremely anxious knowing Aaron was still there! But when she looked down the hallway, Aaron was nowhere to be seen.
'Where is he?' She wondered.
Susanna finally felt relieved and asked, "Austin, will Grandma Maria's surgery proceed as scheduled?"
"Of course it will. Why do you ask?" Austin was a bit flustered, wondering if Susanna had uncovered something.
Susanna thought for a moment and said, "Austin, I heard that a very skilled doctor from Novaria is supposed to perform Grandma Maria's surgery. His sister Erica is quite fond of Aaron, and a lot has happened between them. I'm worried that doctor might not come to perform the surgery anymore."
Austin finally understood what Susanna was getting at. He had heard that Aaron had called off his engagement with Erica because he had told Aaron that it was for Susanna's sake that he agreed to perform the surgery on Grandma Maria. At that time, he had only intended to warn Aaron to stay away from Susanna.
He hadn't realized that Aaron and Susanna were actually married. If he had known about their relationship, he would never have told Aaron the truth. Austin was now deeply regretful. If he had known about Susanna and Aaron's relationship earlier, he would have stayed out of the Abbott family's affairs and taken Susanna back to Novaria immediately.
Austin replied vaguely, "Susanna, don't worry. That renowned doctor will come to perform Grandma Maria's surgery. I promise."
"Then, will that renowned doctor attend the meeting with the other doctors later?" Susanna asked.
Austin was stunned and didn't know how to respond. He stammered, "Susanna, why are you asking this? Do you want to meet him?"
What would he do if Susanna wanted to see him?
Susanna shook her head. "No, I was just asking. As long as the surgery goes smoothly, I don't need to meet that famous doctor."
Besides, that doctor was Erica's brother. If she showed up and made him dislike her, causing more trouble, what would she do then?
At this critical juncture, Susanna didn't want any more unexpected events to occur.
Hearing that Susanna didn't want to meet him, Austin breathed a sigh of relief. If she didn't meet him, he wouldn't have to explain anything.
Seeing Austin's expression, Susanna was a bit surprised. "Austin, why do I feel like you're acting a bit strange today?"
"Am I? Maybe it's just that I've been too busy with work lately."
"Then go to your meeting, Austin. I'll keep Grandma Maria's company for a while."
Austin nodded. " Join me for a prenatal check-up at the hospital this afternoon."
Although he didn't want Susanna to get too close to the Abbott family, he knew she was a sentimental person. When they weren't around to take care of her, Grandma Maria had been kind to Susanna, so he couldn't force Susanna to leave. He planned to take her back to Novaria in the future, away from the Abbott family for good.
Susanna saw him off, finally feeling a bit relieved. After washing the fruit, she headed towards the ward. But just as she approached, the door opened.
Aaron stepped out, standing right in front of her. The man was tall, and being so close to him always brought an inexplicable pressure. Susanna's breath hitched as she held the fruit tray, looking up into his eyes. He lowered his voice and said, "Susanna, I don't care how you fool around with me, but Grandma is in hospital. Have you considered the consequences if she saw you two hugging?"
She swallowed her bitterness and replied quietly, "Grandma is about to have surgery. I don't want to argue with you. Move aside."
Aaron grabbed her wrist, his palm burning hot. He looked down at her. "Do you think I want to argue with you? If you're so eager to throw yourself into another man's arms, I won't stop you. But I have one request. Don't let Grandma know about any of this until she has fully recovered from her surgery."
Susanna forcefully shook off his hand. "Don't worry. I won't let Grandma know. But you, with your recent engagement and scandals, seem eager for Grandma to find out. You're the one who needs to be careful!"
Aaron was momentarily speechless, his face darkening as he recalled the reason for his engagement to Erica. "How dare you mention the engagement? It was all because of you."
"Enough. I don't want to hear about your engagement."
Susanna cut him off. Although she hadn't shown up as the person in charge on the engagement day, the cancellation had nothing to do with her. It wasn't her fault.
She looked at him firmly and said, "Aaron, I hope from now on, we only talk about matters concerning Grandma. After her surgery, we'll get a divorce. From then on, we'll be strangers."
Aaron's mood grew increasingly agitated, especially after seeing her and Austin hugging earlier. He had almost rushed over to punch someone. But he realized his emotions were becoming irrational, influenced by Susanna. He didn't care about her at all! Yet, he couldn't help being affected by her. This unfamiliar feeling was beyond his control.
Aaron released her hand, his gaze complicated. "Susanna, let me told you, you and Austin are not right for each other."
Hearing this, Susanna found it laughable. He really thought she could be with her brother?
She tilted her head, her dark eyes bright. "Aaron, do you like me now?"
