Chapter 559 Something Felt Off
Susanna pushed open Lillian's bedroom door and saw her pretending to be asleep. She knew right away that Lillian wasn't sleep-talking earlier; she was definitely on the phone with someone! Who could Lillian be chatting with in the middle of the night?
Back in the day, she would've thought Lillian was talking to Charles since they used to chat at night all the time. Usually, it was Lillian who bugged him to talk. But now that Charles was back home, who could Lillian be talking to?
Susanna worried that Lillian might be getting tricked by someone, considering how the internet was full of all kinds of people these days.
Susanna bent down to take the smartwatch from Lillian's hand but found it hard to move as Lillian was gripping it tightly.
Looking at Lillian, who was pretending to sleep, Susanna deliberately said, "A sleeping kid can't hold onto things unless she's not really asleep."
After saying that, Susanna felt the grip loosen and easily took the smartwatch. She glanced at it, then left the room, heading back to her own.
Susanna opened WhatsApp and saw that the conversation was all voice messages. She checked the time and played the voice message. "Sweetie, why aren't you replying? Where'd you go?"
Hearing this, Susanna almost exploded with anger. If she didn't recognize the familiar voice, she would've thought it was some creepy guy talking.
She immediately called using Lillian's WhatsApp, and Aaron picked up instantly. "Lillian, you didn't get caught, did you?"
"Aaron, you're something else. Are you playing spy games with me?" Susanna wished she could rush over and slap Aaron!
Aaron coughed a few times and explained, "I was just chatting with Lillian. Why are you so worked up?"
"Stop pretending. You sent that telescope to Charles today, didn't you?" Now Susanna was almost certain it was Aaron.
She had some doubts before, wondering how Aaron knew when Charles was getting discharged. But now she understood who had leaked the information to him. She never expected a traitor to be so close to her.
Aaron's voice came through the phone. "Yes, I sent it. Does Charles like it?"
"He doesn't like it at all. Do you think your telescope is so special? The family bought him three high-end branded telescopes. Why would he care about yours?"
Susanna still wasn't satisfied after saying that. "Do you think you can bribe Charles with some expensive gifts? It's not like he hasn't seen the world or doesn't have money. Anything you can buy, we can buy too."
Aaron replied seriously, "I just wanted to make it up to him and celebrate his discharge. I had no other intentions."
"You know Charles doesn't like you, and you still use this method. What are you up to?" Hearing the slight grievance in Aaron's tone, Susanna gradually calmed down after venting.
She didn't oppose Aaron interacting with Charles and Lillian, given that he was their biological father. What she hated was he secretly contacting them behind her back.
Aaron's voice was low. "Sorry, I shouldn't have contacted Charles and Lillian behind your back."
Hearing his sincere apology, Susanna couldn't stay angry. She said, "Don't call Lillian so late in the future. Kids shouldn't stay up late, you know?"
"I usually keep an eye on the time and make sure she goes to bed. Tonight was just an exception."
Susanna paused. "Let's just forget about tonight."
"Wait, what's going on between you and Michael?"
Susanna raised an eyebrow. "Why do you ask?"
Aaron tugged at his tie. "As your ex-husband, can't I ask about your love life? After all, whoever you're with is important to the kids. I should care about this."
Susanna asked, "Mr. Abbott, aren't you overstepping?"
Aaron's lips thinned. "You could say that."
"Aaron, are you jealous?" Susanna asked on purpose, knowing Aaron's personality would never admit it.
"Yes, I am jealous."
Hearing this, Susanna was stunned, not expecting Aaron to respond that way.
"Susanna, I've always been serious. I want to pursue you again and win back our relationship..." Before Aaron could finish, the call was hung up.
He stared at the phone for a few seconds, then sent Susanna a WhatsApp message: [I won't give up.]
Susanna sat on the bed, looking at the message. She didn't reply.
She scrolled through their chat history, noticing that most of the messages were from him, with her rarely responding. This situation was very similar to how she was with Aaron five years ago. But now, their roles had reversed.
This feeling of making Aaron experience the pain she had endured was somewhat satisfying. This was just the beginning; she had been humble for five years!
Susanna returned to the children's room and found Lillian already asleep, sprawled out without a care in the world. She placed the smartwatch back on the table and covered Lillian with a blanket.
Susanna didn't blame Lillian for secretly contacting Aaron as she had always been a warm-hearted child. Now that she had found her biological father, she was naturally curious about Aaron.
The next day, Susanna went straight to work. Quinn approached her. "Ms. Jones, these are the project proposals from potential partners. You might want to take a look."
"Leave them here." Susanna glanced at the proposals in front of her. Could any of them be from the Abbott Family?
Quinn read her expression and quickly said, "Ms. Jones, there's no proposal from the Abbott Family here. It seems they have some self-awareness."
Susanna looked at her secretary. "Did I ask you?" She didn't care whether Aaron wanted to collaborate or not.
She mainly thought it was funny how Maud, Elaine, and Vivian had boasted about hosting their events at the Velvet Sky Ballroom at the recent banquet. They probably went home feeling angry even in their sleep. What they considered a great honor was worthless to her.
Quinn continued, "But surprisingly, the people from Emerald Island submitted a proposal. We haven't had any special contact with them before."
Susanna also found it strange. Not only had they had no prior relationship, but now everyone knew she owned the Velvet Sky Ballroom. Had the people from Emerald Island forgotten about Betsy causing trouble at the research institute and the conflict with the Jones family? What were they trying to do?
At that moment, she received a WhatsApp message from Amelia: [My mother plans to divorce my father.]
