Chapter 458 He Turned Out to Be the Fool
Sam cut to the chase, hoping to catch Lillian off guard.
Kids were easy to trick, so he threw out a line to see what he could reel in.
When Aaron heard Sam's question, his eyelids twitched. He grumbled about why Sam couldn't be more subtle.
The phone was on speaker, so Aaron could hear Lillian's voice too.
Lillian, in her sweet little voice, shot back, "I'm not sick, you're the one who's sick!"
Sam was taken aback and glanced at Aaron. Maybe Aaron was onto something?
Aaron gave Sam a look, urging him to keep going.
Sam cleared his throat and asked, "Lillian, if you're not sick, why did your mommy need a bone marrow donation last time?"
There was a brief pause before Lillian replied, "To treat my illness."
"Lillian, stop playing games. You just said you weren't sick. I know the secret between you and your mommy."
Lillian got a bit flustered but tried to stay cool, "Are you dumb? My mommy said I'm cured, so I'm not sick anymore."
Sam was momentarily stumped. If she put it that way, it kinda made sense.
He pressed on, "Lillian, that's not very interesting."
"Then let me tell you something interesting."
Sam glanced at Aaron and then asked, "What's interesting?"
"Actually, I'm an alien."
What? An alien?
Sam was confused. "Lillian, how did you become an alien?"
"Because I am an alien, that's why I got better so fast. Don't tell Daddy this secret, he doesn't know that Mommy and I are both aliens."
Sam was silent.
He didn't know how to respond.
Aaron, hearing Lillian's mysterious words, couldn't help but smile wryly.
Sam felt speechless and hung up. "I thought I had it figured out. Do you think Lillian was telling the truth or just messing with us?"
Aaron replied calmly, "What do you think?"
Sam looked at Tyler beside him. "What do you think? Kids usually don't lie, right?"
Tyler answered seriously, "It's well known that kids don't lie, but they do make things up."
Hearing Tyler's words, Sam fell silent.
Indeed, Lillian had just said she was an alien.
Her serious tone almost made it believable, except the claim was too absurd.
So, when they first asked Lillian if she was sick, her words weren't credible.
Sam held his head. "Why do I feel like I did something stupid?"
What was he thinking, trying to get the truth from a three-year-old?
In the end, the joke was on him.
The key point was that he actually believed it at first.
Aaron mocked him mercilessly, "Good that you realize it."
Actually, when Aaron first heard Lillian's words, he almost believed it too.
Tyler's expression was very complicated. These two men were well-known in Lindwell, usually decisive and strategic in business, but they actually tried to test a three-year-old!
He couldn't understand what these two were thinking. Their thoughts were truly incomprehensible.
On the other end of the smartwatch, after hanging up, Lillian looked worried. "Charles, what should I do? Did I mess up?"
Charles, with a cold and noble expression, said, "So stupid."
"Charles, I'm not stupid."
Lillian felt a bit down and leaned closer to Charles. "Charles, did I mess up just now?"
Charles put down the paper he was holding. "You handled it well enough. Good thing I was here."
When Lillian got the call on her smartwatch, Charles was right there. He heard Sam's questions and knew something was fishy.
He quickly stopped Lillian and scribbled down how she should respond on a piece of paper.
Mixing some truth with lies, Sam might not buy into Lillian's story completely.
Lillian propped her chin. "Why doesn't Mommy want Daddy to know about you? If he knew you were sick, he'd probably shower you with gifts."
"I don't care about gifts."
Charles, with his serious little face, wasn't as easily fooled as Lillian. He knew exactly how Aaron had ditched Susanna back then.
If their uncles hadn't found Susanna in time, she would've had it even worse.
These weren't things Aaron could fix with a few gifts or sweet words.
"Charles, Daddy's not that bad. He sends me lots of gifts and always checks in to see if anyone's bothering me."
"Don't fall for his act. Mommy hasn't forgiven him yet. Traitor!"
Hearing "traitor," Lillian got anxious. "I'm not a traitor. I'll always stand by Mommy."
"But you just praised him! You're a little traitor!"
Lillian's eyes welled up with anger. She was not a little traitor.
Just then, Susanna walked into the hospital room. "What's going on? Are you two fighting?"
Lillian stood up and huffed, "Charles, I don't want to talk to you anymore."
With that, she ran out of the room without looking back.
Susanna looked at Charles. "What happened?"
"She's just being a brat, getting mad over a few words."
"She's your sister. Be nicer to her."
Charles replied arrogantly, "I'm being nice by telling her the truth. You all spoil her too much; she'll suffer later."
Seeing Charles's mature demeanor, Susanna couldn't help but laugh. "Don't talk like an old man. You're only four, not forty."
She ruffled Charles's hair on purpose.
Charles's expression turned a bit awkward. "Mommy, my illness is cured. When are you gonna make that man leave Philadelphia?"
Susanna paused. "He should leave soon. Why do you ask?"
"Just that my illness is cured, and we don't need him for anything. Keeping him around is pointless."
"I know, you don't need to worry about that."
Her main concern was Charles's health.
So after taking Lillian to the hospital to fool Aaron, she immediately brought Lillian to visit Charles.
So far, his recovery was going well.
But he wasn't completely healthy yet.
The doctor had mentioned before that if Charles had a timely bone marrow transplant, he would recover like a normal child. However, things don't always go as planned.
Still, Charles's health was much better than before, and he could attend kindergarten like other kids, just with some precautions.
That was enough for her.
Looking at Charles's features, which resembled Aaron's, Susanna said with a complicated expression, "Charles, do you want to see him?"
By "him," she meant Aaron, of course.
