Chapter 162 Divorce Isn't Absolutely Necessary
After Susanna finished speaking, she immediately realized she had misspoken and couldn't help but bite her tongue.
Aaron's gaze became meaningful. "It's not impossible."
Susanna's face turned bright red, and she turned her head. "After Maria's surgery is successful, let's go meet the lawyer and finalize the divorce!"
After she finished speaking, the air around them returned to silence.
The ambiguous atmosphere that had suddenly appeared vanished instantly.
Aaron calmed down, leaning back on the metal chair, feeling as if something was pressing on his chest, making it hard to breathe.
He glanced at her, saying, "Actually, divorce isn't absolutely necessary."
Susanna thought she had misheard, looking at Aaron in disbelief. She understood every single word he said, but when put together, she couldn't quite grasp the meaning.
'Not absolutely necessary? So, divorce or not?'
Aaron sensed her gaze, and his expression became somewhat unnatural, his tone a bit stiff. "I mean, I don't have any particular requirements for a spouse. Grandma really likes you, and with you around, her recovery will be better. So, I've considered it, and you can continue being Mrs. Abbott."
After Aaron finished speaking, Susanna felt her mind go blank.
The air was incredibly quiet. Susanna turned her head to look at Aaron, suddenly leaning in closer to him.
Aaron lowered his eyes to look at the woman in front of him. He remained motionless as she approached, catching a faint, pleasant scent from her.
Aaron's deep eyes were filled with Susanna's reflection.
In a short time, his heartbeat accelerated significantly.
'Why is she getting so close? Is it that she is overjoyed by what I said?'
The next second, Susanna reached out and pulled his head, their foreheads touching, their breaths mingling.
Aaron's breath hitched, and his eyes opened wide.
His body stiffened, staring intently at the woman in front of him, his gaze falling on her rosy lips.
Quickly, Susanna pulled away. "What's wrong? It's not hot. Why are you speaking so strangely, as if you have a fever?"
Susanna had married the half-dead Aaron partly because of Maria and partly because she liked Aaron!
If she didn't like him, how could she have stayed by his side for three years?
Susanna looked at him incredulously. "Besides, just because you don't have requirements for a spouse doesn't mean I don't."
Aaron was stunned, quickly stepping back, his thin lips pressed into a cold line.
But her voice kept ringing in his ears. "Aaron, say something. Why are you so quiet? If you're unwell, you should see a doctor. Have you checked your temperature?"
Aaron's throat moved up and down a few times. He stood up and turned to leave, feeling like a fool who had been played. He shouldn't have said those things!
Aaron walked away with a slightly embarrassed stride.
Susanna watched his retreating figure, stating, "If you're unwell, you should seek treatment!"
Aaron's face was grim as he quickly left.
Susanna leaned back in the chair alone. After calming down, she recalled their conversation and Aaron's words about not divorcing.
She lowered her eyes. Aaron must have been out of his mind to say such things.
In three years of marriage, he had hated her so much. If it weren't for Maria protecting her, she wouldn't have lasted three years and would have been kicked out by the Abbott family.
If Maria's surgery was finally successful, she thought Aaron would be happy to hear the word "divorce." She didn't expect him to say they didn't have to divorce!
What a joke!
He thought they could make do, but she didn't want to anymore.
Especially now that she had two babies in her belly, how could she stay in the Abbott family?
After her final exams this semester, as long as she passed, she would have enough credits. She would then prepare to go back to Novaria with her brothers to have the babies and begin a new chapter in her life.
She had long been ready to leave!
Maybe Aaron now saw Erica's true colors and, after thinking it over, decided Susanna was the best fit to be Mrs. Abbott, which was why he said they didn't have to divorce.
But Susanna wouldn't take it seriously.
Lost in thought, Susanna caught a whiff of perfume. Without a doubt, she knew who was approaching.
She looked up and indeed saw Elaine approaching, wearing a frown. "You should keep your distance. Your perfume might waft into the operating room and disturb the doctors," she warned.
Elaine bit her lip in anger and snorted coldly, "Susanna, don't think I don't know what you're up to. I know your secret."
Susanna frowned. "Alright, alright, you know my secret. You know everything. Can you please move away? Don't get close to the operating room. Your perfume is too strong. Don't you know that? Or is your sense of smell off? Can't you smell it?"
Elaine's fury intensified as she grabbed the inheritance document nearby. "This is your end game, isn't it? Keeping it hidden from all of us," she accused.
Susanna glanced at the document. "I don't know what you're talking about."
"Susanna, stop pretending. I have to admit, your trick of covering your ears while stealing a bell is quite effective. Everyone is in the dark, even Aaron signed this without suspecting you."
Elaine looked at her with feigned profundity. "Susanna, too bad your petty schemes can't deceive me. Now that I'm aware, your plan won't prevail. I won't allow you to remain in the Abbott family!"
Susanna sighed, "Then why don't you explain clearly what I've done, what tricks I've used! If you don't say it, how will I know?"
"Susanna, you're pregnant, aren't you?"Elaine questioned.
When Susanna heard Elaine's words, her heart raced, and she widened her eyes, scrutinizing Elaine. Did she find out from Allison?
No, Austin said Allison had been dealt with.
Susanna trusted Austin wouldn't lie to her.
She quickly composed herself and replied calmly, "Yes, I'm pregnant. Otherwise, why would Grandma Maria agree to make the child in my belly the heir of Abbott Group?"
"Susanna, you're still pretending. Everyone thinks you're faking a pregnancy to coax Grandma into surgery. But I'm the only one who knows you're actually expecting. Now you're using this as an excuse to withdraw, and the document designating your child as the heir is something you orchestrated on purpose, isn't it?"
Elaine became more emotional as she spoke, convinced her suspicions were correct.
Finally, she had something on Susanna!
Susanna cursed silently. "Elaine, you, who seemed so foolish, actually had a moment of cunning!"
So what should Susanna do now?
What if Elaine had evidence from Allison?
