Chapter 584 The Truth Was Often Full of Drama
Maud shot a glance at Charles, who was the spitting image of Aaron. No doubt about it, this kid was Aaron's. But thinking about how she almost ended Charles' life herself, Maud felt too guilty to even look Susanna in the eye.
Maud forced herself to speak up, "Can you really blame me for this? If you had been honest from the start, how could I have stopped Aaron from donating his bone marrow? I would've made sure he did everything to save Charles. Your secrecy led to this mess." Maud was a pro at dodging blame.
"I hid it on purpose? So you're saying if these kids weren't Aaron's, you and Vivian had the right to plot to kill my child? Are you two nuts? Don't you know murder is illegal?" Susanna found Maud's logic completely twisted.
Maud was at a loss for words. She never expected Susanna to have twins. She just wanted to teach Susanna a lesson by switching the bone marrow, not realizing she almost killed Charles.
If things had gone south back then, the fallout would've been unimaginable. Maud thought it over and nearly lost her balance.
Ivy stepped in to steady Maud and said, "Why are you being so humble with her? You're the kid's grandmother. The child doesn't get it now, but when he grows up, he'll know what it means to be part of the Abbott Family. Who'd give up all that wealth to live a tough life abroad with his mom?"
Lillian couldn't take it anymore and snapped at Ivy, "My mom would never let us live a hard life. We're really happy with her."
Ivy said, "You know nothing. Even if you wanted to come back, the Abbott Family only wants boys. Only boys can inherit."
Lillian's eyes filled with tears. Seeing Lillian upset, Aaron scooped her up and glared at Ivy, saying, "I suggest you watch your mouth."
"I'm not wrong. Traditionally, only boys inherit. When have girls ever taken over the family business?"
"Just because you don't know doesn't mean it doesn't happen. If Lillian wants, I can give her everything I have."
"How can that be? If you're going to give it to your daughter, you might as well give it to my son. At least your cousin is a boy and can inherit everything from the Abbott Family."
Susanna saw right through Ivy's attempt to stir up trouble. Aaron's tone turned icy. "You better drop that idea. Even if I give away all my wealth, not a penny will go to outsiders."
Hearing this, Ivy immediately turned to Maud and said, "Did you hear what Aaron just said? Why should the Abbott Family's wealth go to an outsider?"
Maud pushed Ivy away. "You think Aaron's fortune has no heirs, right? All this wealth belongs to Aaron, and you won't get a penny."
"Maud, what are you even saying? Have you forgotten what Mom and Dad taught us? Calum's struggling in Novaria, and the Abbott Family's loaded. What's wrong with helping him out?"
Maud snapped, "Just because I'm a daughter, I have to keep sacrificing? I've had enough. Mom and Dad are gone, so why should I keep giving you money?"
"If Aaron's going to donate all his wealth, wouldn't it be better to keep it in the family? Don't you think?"
"You have no ties to the Abbott Family. What right does your son have to inherit their wealth?"
"Is Aaron even a legitimate Abbott? He's not even your biological son."
Susanna was floored. Did Ivy know about this too? Wasn't Aaron's identity supposed to be a secret within the Abbott Family?
According to Aaron, only Maria and he knew about his background. Maud should've been in the dark. But from what Ivy just said, it was clear Maud knew. Otherwise, how would an outsider know?
Susanna figured Maria would've kept it under wraps. So the only explanation was that Maud had known all along and let it slip to Ivy.
The situation got super awkward. Susanna hadn't expected a simple meal with the kids to lead to this bombshell. She instinctively looked at Aaron, trying to read his expression.
Maud's face showed even more distress. She slapped Ivy hard across the face. "Stop talking nonsense! Aaron is my son and the sole heir of the Abbott Family."
Ivy, who had always bullied Maud, couldn't take it and fired back, "You told me yourself that Aaron isn't your biological son. The child you gave birth to died long ago. You've been scared to reveal this because you fear losing the heir and being kicked out of the Abbott Family. Then you wouldn't be a wealthy lady anymore."
Maud was devastated. She hadn't expected Ivy to know so much. She had only let it slip when she was drunk, but Ivy had done her homework. It seemed Ivy had always been eyeing the Abbott Family's wealth.
Maud turned to Aaron, her face no longer haughty but filled with panic. "Aaron, don't listen to Ivy. She's just after our family's wealth and is trying to drive a wedge between us. You are definitely my child. You are the sole heir of the Abbott Family."
Ivy added, "Enough, Maud. Stop hiding it. I've already looked into everything. Aaron is not only not your son, but he's also your husband's illegitimate child from an affair. He switched the babies so you'd raise him. He planned to bring his mistress back, but who could've predicted she'd die early?"
Maud lunged at Ivy, clawing at her. "Shut up! What nonsense are you spouting? I promise you'll regret this." At that moment, Maud finally felt fear.
