Chapter 515 When It Comes to Feelings, I'm Just a Coward
Susanna raised an eyebrow, eyeing Aaron up and down. Did he seriously think she'd just forgive him and they'd get back together?
Aaron's eyes said it all.
Did he really think she was that easy to win over?
Aaron looked at her. "Susanna, you mean more to me than just a pretty face. It's a shame I figured it out too late. I'm happier than anyone that you're still here because it means I get a shot at making things right."
Susanna took a deep breath. "But back then, why couldn't I see any of this?"
"I was too clueless and cocky. I'd never felt this way about anyone before, so I freaked out."
"It was me who liked you back then. It had nothing to do with you. You don't need to feel guilty or like you let me down." Her heart trembled a bit, and she couldn't bring herself to look into his eyes.
Aaron put a hand on her shoulder. "Susanna, when it comes to love, I'm a total coward. I wasn't even half as brave and straightforward as you were."
A hint of sarcasm flashed in Susanna's eyes. "Don't say that. Back then, having me like you must've been a real pain, right?"
Aaron felt a pang in his chest. "No, I was just a jerk. It wasn't your fault."
Susanna felt her emotions getting all mixed up.
She quickly reined in those feelings, not wanting to fall for Aaron's sweet talk.
She knew all too well how smooth Aaron could be.
He never lost a negotiation.
Susanna reached out and cupped his cheek. "Mr. Abbott."
Aaron's breath caught. He looked seriously at Susanna, his voice a bit shaky, "Go ahead."
Right now, he'd agree to anything she asked, as long as she'd take him back.
Susanna looked at his mature, handsome face. Even after five years, he hadn't aged; he'd only gotten more attractive.
She could believe that wherever Aaron went, women would be drawn to him.
Susanna patted his face. "Mr. Abbott, I get it. You regret the divorce. After all, someone as awesome as me is hard to forget. But..."
"But what?" Aaron looked at her, a hint of insecurity in his eyes.
At this moment, he felt like a prisoner awaiting his final judgment.
He'd never felt this anxious before.
Susanna looked calmly at Aaron, her eyes cold, her expression steady.
Aaron's hope slowly faded.
He started to panic a bit.
He awkwardly held her hand and said, "Don't say it. I suddenly don't want to know."
He quickly let go of her hand like it was on fire.
Susanna's shoulders relaxed. She looked up at him, but Aaron turned slightly, his expression hard to read.
She took a deep breath. "Aaron, it's over between us. You really don't need to..."
"It's getting late. Let me take you home." Aaron cut her off, grabbing his coat from the chair, his words full of avoidance.
Susanna watched Aaron's back, suddenly at a loss for words.
She had her doubts. Could a guy like Aaron really be so taken with a woman?
Susanna followed him out of the private room, walking a few steps behind.
They stood outside the elevator, neither saying a word.
Susanna got a WhatsApp message from her assistant, filling her in on the drama between Vivian and Amelia at the hospital. She had to admit, Vivian was really pulling out all the stops.
This time, Vivian had used Maud's water-splashing incident to gain sympathy from Owen.
Susanna frowned. Vivian had gotten a lot craftier, sticking to Owen like glue.
Amelia didn't stand a chance against her right now.
Susanna put down her phone and noticed Aaron watching her. When she looked over, he quickly looked away, pretending he hadn't been staring.
Susanna paused and said, "Vivian's really stepped up her game. She's staying close to Owen by agreeing to have Ramond adopted into The Richardson Family. What's your plan?"
"What do you want me to do?"
Facing his gaze, Susanna pursed her lips. "I'm not letting Vivian off the hook. She almost hurt my kid back then. I won't go easy on her. Given her personality, if she gains power in Philadelphia, she'll definitely come after me. So I'll strike first."
In the past, she wouldn't have asked Aaron.
But now that she knew Aaron's background, she had to ask.
After all, the kid Vivian had was one of his few relatives in this world.
Aaron raised an eyebrow. "Are you worried about me?"
"Don't flatter yourself. I just don't want things to get messy later. If you plan to side with Vivian, I'll make more preparations. But I won't change my approach."
Aaron sighed. "Don't worry. To me, you and the kids are the most important. No one else matters."
"I'm not here for sweet talk. I just wanted to give you a heads-up and see where you stand with Vivian."
"I've never had any relationship with her. My taste isn't that bad."
Susanna stepped into the elevator. Looking at their reflections in the elevator, she said, "How's Maria doing lately? I remember you got some special medicine. Is it working?"
"The treatment's going well. All the indicators are looking good. As for when Grandma will wake up, the doctors can't say for sure."
After saying this, Aaron looked at her seriously. "The doctors also said that having people she cares about around might help. If Grandma knew you had kids, she'd definitely want to wake up and see them."
Susanna was silent for a moment. "I'll go see her after I deal with Vivian."
After all, Maria had been really good to her.
"If you're willing to do that, Grandma will be very happy. Thank you."
Aaron knew Susanna didn't have to agree to any of his conditions now, but she was still willing to take the kids to see Maria. He realized he had been blind back then, not seeing the best person was right beside him.
Susanna took a deep breath. "Well, in that case, there's something I should let you know. Just getting mentally prepared."
"What is it?"
"The truth about Grandma's fall down the stairs."
