Chapter 568 Just Acting, Who Can't Do That?
When Susanna spotted Amelia's grandparents, Eugene Martinez and Daphne Morgan, a thought hit her, 'What are they doing here? Does Amelia forget to tell them about this?' She started to feel a bit uneasy.
Owen, too, looked a little on edge when he saw Eugene and Daphne show up. He shot a glance at Amelia and said, "Your grandparents are here."
The message was clear: he wanted Amelia to explain why they were crashing the party. Everything was going smoothly, and he didn't want their presence to mess things up.
Amelia's face fell. "Dad, I have no idea why Grandpa and Grandma decided to come today, but don't worry, I'll handle it. I won't let you down."
With her reassurance, Owen finally relaxed a bit. He walked up to Eugene and Daphne. "Why the sudden visit? If you had told me, I could've sent a car for you."
Daphne snorted. "With my status, why would I need you to send a car?" Her tone was icy.
Eugene glanced at the little boy next to him and said coldly, "Is this the kid you're so eager to adopt? He doesn't look too bright. If you want a descendant, Amelia can have kids after she gets married. Aren't you worried people will laugh at you for letting a child with no status inherit?"
Owen was taken aback by their words and looked at Amelia. "Amelia, didn't you say you convinced your grandparents?" But their tone made it clear they weren't on board, and Amelia hadn't convinced them at all.
Amelia looked nervous and pulled Eugene and Daphne aside. "Grandpa, Grandma, let's talk inside. There are too many people here; it's not the right place."
Eugene and Daphne grumbled but eventually headed towards the hall. Owen let out a small sigh of relief. A public argument would have been a disaster. He glanced at Eugene and Daphne, then turned to Amelia. "Be straight with me. Did you really convince your grandparents?"
Amelia looked troubled. "I'm sorry, Dad. I lied. I talked to them, but they were firm and didn't agree. But I'm on your side now. Give me some time, and I'll convince them."
"How could you be so foolish? How could you lie about something so important?" Owen was furious but held back. At least Amelia was on his side now. Whether Eugene and Daphne agreed or not didn't matter as much as keeping things harmonious and not giving his competitors an edge.
Owen quickly headed towards the hall. Susanna seized the moment to approach Amelia. "What's going on? Do you need my help?"
Amelia's guilty look turned calm. "No, I can handle it." With that, she walked away. Susanna, still worried, wanted to follow and see if she could help.
Just as Amelia entered the hall, Vivian emerged from the side, having changed her clothes. She was surprised to see Eugene and Daphne there. Were they here for Ramond too? The thought made Vivian nervous.
Owen noticed Vivian and said, "Go greet them, and bring Ramond over too."
Vivian didn't want to, but she walked over anyway. Before she could say anything, Daphne snapped, "No need to bring that child over. He's not part of our family, and I don’t recognize him."
Vivian's eyes lit up with a hint of joy. It seemed like Amelia hadn't convinced them after all. This was good news. Vivian turned to Owen, pretending to be concerned. "Dad, what should we do?"
Amelia stepped forward. "Grandpa, Grandma, can we talk privately? I'll explain everything later."
Daphne said, "Amelia, you've let us down. You actually acknowledge that child Ramond. What about your mother? Are you trying to force her to accept the child of a mistress? Are you trying to drive her to despair?"
Eugene added, "Amelia, how did you turn out like this? Even if you leave your father, we can still support you. Why do you have to lower yourself to accept the child of a mistress?"
Amelia dropped to her knees in front of Eugene and Daphne. "Grandpa, Grandma, both Dad and Mom are important to me. Ramond is just a child; he doesn’t know his own status. It’s not his fault. Dad wants to bring Ramond home to take care of him, and I understand. We will all be a family in the future. I believe Dad won't treat me unfairly. I just want a complete family!"
Seeing Amelia kneel and plead, Owen was moved. After all, he had truly loved Amelia over the years and had always nurtured her. Amelia had never disappointed him. She had always excelled in her studies and social interactions.
Owen stepped forward. "Amelia, get up. This is an issue between us elders. You don't need to get involved."
Amelia replied, "Dad, I said I would handle this. I will beg Grandpa and Grandma to accept Ramond."
"This is ridiculous." Daphne raised her hand and slapped Amelia hard. "If you accept Ramond, we will consider you no longer our child."
Seeing Amelia get slapped, Vivian couldn't help but smile. She knew it. Amelia's sudden change and claim of convincing the elders had seemed strange. It turned out Amelia was lying, so Vivian had nothing to worry about.
Owen felt sorry for Amelia. "Amelia, whether your mom and I stay together or not, I will always be your father, and they will always be your grandparents. There's no need to ruin your relationship with them."
Amelia, holding her swollen face, said, "But I don't want Dad and Mom to divorce. I want a complete family. Is that wrong? As long as Dad and Mom don't divorce, I can accept Ramond."
Looking at Amelia and hearing her words, Owen felt guilty and sad. He said, "Amelia, I promise you I won't divorce your mother."
Eugene and Daphne exchanged a glance and sighed heavily, seemingly compromising. Daphne looked at Owen with resignation. "We can accept Ramond, but we have one condition."
