Chapter 488 Finally, It Couldn't Be Hidden Anymore
Susanna's heart jumped into her throat when Aaron started grilling her about Charles. 'Is he onto Charles?' she thought, her nerves jangling.
She lowered her gaze and said, "Who do you think that kid is?"
"Susanna, I'm asking you. Don't flip the question back at me."
With Aaron's eyes boring into her, Susanna tried to play it cool. "That kid? He's just one of the patients at the institute."
"He's getting treatment at the institute?"
"Yeah, that's right. This place is Michael's brainchild. He's been researching all sorts of stuff here, including treatments for tough diseases. So, a lot of parents send their kids here for care. The institute's got doctors and nurses on deck 24/7."
"But why do I get the feeling that kid and Michael are more than just doctor and patient?"
Susanna bit her lip. Aaron's sharp; he was picking up on something.
She kept her cool. "Michael spends a lot of time with these kids. They all get close to him."
"Susanna, you're lying."
"Why would I lie? I'm telling the truth. If you don't believe me, go check it out. There are tons of kids getting treatment here, not just him."
She was confident about that. She wasn't lying; the institute did have a bunch of kids.
"Susanna, are you still lying to me? I've already found out what you've been hiding."
Susanna shot him a suspicious look. Had he figured out who Charles really was?
No way. If he knew, he wouldn't be acting like this. So, what did he know?
Or maybe he was just bluffing, trying to get her to spill the beans.
She lifted her head, trying to look confident. "What am I hiding? Go on, tell me."
Aaron stepped closer, backing her up against the car door, trapping her.
He looked down at her. "Susanna, the person you saved with my bone marrow wasn't Lillian, was it?"
Susanna's face went pale. How did he find out?
How much did he know?
"Susanna, answer me. It wasn't Lillian, right?"
Seeing her flustered, Aaron knew something was up.
For a moment, Susanna was at a loss for words.
Aaron grabbed her chin. "I have proof. Lying won't help. I just want to know if Lillian is sick. She's my daughter; I have the right to know."
Susanna slapped his hand away. "Does it even matter to you if Lillian's sick or not?"
"Of course it matters to me. Susanna, I can let the bone marrow lie slide 'cause I know Lillian ain't sick. How could you use her illness as an excuse? She's just a kid."
"This has nothing to do with you, and you don't need to know the truth."
"As the donor, don't I have the right to know who got my bone marrow?"
Susanna pressed her lips together. Could she really keep this under wraps any longer?
She looked up and said, "You don't need to know. I thank you on behalf of the person who got your bone marrow."
"Susanna, do you think I care about your thanks? When I found out it wasn't Lillian, do you know how relieved I was?"
Susanna lowered her head, staying silent. She didn't want people thinking Lillian was sick and treating her differently.
But for Charles, she had no other choice back then.
She hadn't expected Aaron to figure out it wasn't Lillian. How had she slipped up?
"Susanna, even if you tell me who got my bone marrow, I won't blame you. I can't take it back now. Donating to save someone isn't a big deal to me."
Susanna sighed in relief. "Since you don't care, there's no need to keep asking."
She turned to leave, but Aaron grabbed her wrist. "If it's no big deal, why won't you tell me who it was? What are you hiding?"
"You just said you wouldn't mind, so why are you still asking?"
Aaron's eyes darkened. "Because I think the one who got my bone marrow might be my other kid."
Susanna froze. He had guessed it.
She avoided his gaze, panicking. "What other kid? You're overthinking it."
"Susanna, do you really think I'm an idiot? That I'd be kept in the dark and played by you? Since Lillian wasn't sick, why did you come to Lindwell and tell me she was, just in time for me to donate? Do you think anyone could just happen to be a match for me?"
"It was just a coincidence."
"Coincidence? You're still lying. How could it be such a coincidence? You came to me 'cause you knew the chances of a match were high. Only close relatives have a high probability of a match. That means the person who got my bone marrow is related to me by blood. Who else could it be but my kid?"
Hearing this, Susanna knew she couldn't keep up the act any longer. Aaron's sharpness was beyond her expectations.
Even if he had sensed the truth, it wasn't a big issue anymore since Charles's condition had stabilized. Susanna looked directly at Aaron and said, "You're right. The sick one wasn't Lillian; it was another child."
