Chapter 572 That Man Alone

The dining room got super quiet all of a sudden. Lillian's sweet voice cut through the silence. "Mom, who is Maria to me?"

"She's your great-grandmother," Susanna replied.

"Then I should get her a gift," Lillian said thoughtfully.

Susanna smiled, and Charles, looking all serious, said to Lillian, "Edward hasn't given us the green light to go to Lindwell yet."

Edward glanced at them and asked, "Do you want to go back?"

Lillian nodded. "Great-Grandma seems really sick. If I go and cheer her up, will she get better faster?"

Susanna's eyes started to well up. Lillian was always such a warm-hearted kid. Charles, still stern, said, "I don't really care."

Aviana chimed in, "Since Maria's finally awake, it's only right to take the kids to see her. She was always so good to Susanna back in the day."

Edward snorted. "Good? You know how the Abbott Family treated Susanna."

Aviana tugged on Edward's arm. "Come on, don't be so stubborn. Let's keep things separate."

Finally, Edward said, "Fine, you can take the kids back to Lindwell. You might as well visit Madison; she probably wants to see these two."

Susanna sighed in relief. "I think so too. We can visit Madison; she's been wanting to see the kids."

The other brothers joined in. "It's been a while since we went back. Let's get some gifts for Madison."

"I'll find some time to go back too. I miss Madison's cooking."

Susanna felt a weight lift off her shoulders. Despite the bumps, Edward finally agreed to let her take Charles and Lillian to visit Maria. "Thanks, Edward."

Edward, still stern, said, "I didn't agree to you mingling with the Abbott Family. I'm just letting you take the kids to see Madison. Don't read too much into it."

Susanna knew Edward was being stubborn, but she didn't mind. As long as he agreed, it was fine.

She knew her brothers were always good to her. No matter what she asked, they'd agree, but she didn't want to make things hard for them. She thought, 'When something happens, a family should talk it out together.'

After dinner, Susanna had a heart-to-heart with Charles and Lillian. She knew Charles didn't like the Abbott Family, but Maria was different.

Susanna had to make it clear to Charles that if he showed any dislike for the Abbott Family in front of Maria, it might hurt her feelings. She didn't want Maria to be sad.

After listening to Susanna, Charles's stern little face softened. "I get it. Since Great-Grandma's a good person, I'll behave."

Lillian, with tears in her eyes, said, "Great-Grandma is so nice. Why is she sick?"

Susanna patted Lillian's head. "She was healthy, but some bad people hurt her. This time, besides visiting Maria, we need to catch the culprit and make them pay." Charles and Lillian nodded obediently.

Back in her room, Susanna got a message from Aaron: [Grandma's condition isn't looking good. She might not make it.]

Seeing the message, Susanna got really anxious and called right away. "What's going on? Do you need more of that wonder drug? I can find a way to get some."

Aaron replied, "Grandma's awake, but the wonder drug might not help much now. Her condition isn't looking good, and the doctor told us to be prepared. But I told Grandma about the kids, and she's really happy."

"I get it. I've got tickets for tomorrow. I'll bring them to see her."

Standing in the hospital corridor, Aaron smiled hearing her response. "Thanks, Susanna." Aaron knew the Jones Family wouldn't easily agree to Susanna bringing the kids back to Lindwell.

"Maria was always so good to me. She wanted me to have kids. I lied to her back then. So, I should bring them back to see her. Maybe seeing the kids will make her feel better."

Aaron felt a warmth hearing this. With a hoarse voice, Aaron said, "Alright. I'll send someone to pick you up at the airport tomorrow."

After hanging up, Susanna sat by the window, lost in thought for a long time. She didn't expect her second return to Lindwell to be because of Maria. She also didn't expect this might be the last time Maria woke up.

Susanna couldn't imagine that the Maria who cared for her during her sensitive orphan days would leave this world. She couldn't accept it.

The next day, Susanna took Charles and Lillian straight to the airport. Since the doctor said Maria's condition was unstable, she wanted to get the kids there as soon as possible.

Before leaving, Aviana asked, "Why are you leaving in such a hurry?"

Susanna lowered her voice. "Aaron told me yesterday that Maria woke up, and it might be the last time. We don't know what'll happen next. So, I want to take them back early. Seeing the kids might be her greatest wish."

Aviana quickly nodded and patted her shoulder. "I believe she'll get through this, especially with the kids by her side."

"I hope so. If Maria's condition is really bad, I might stay in Lindwell with the kids for a while. Please help me convince Edward."

"Don't worry, I'll talk to Edward. He cares about you deep down. He knows how good Maria was to you back then."

Susanna took Charles and Lillian on a flight straight to Lindwell. Returning to this place made her feel emotional. The last time she came, Charles's health hadn't recovered. This time, both Charles and Lillian were by her side. This was the best outcome for her.

Susanna and the kids walked out of the airport, and Aaron's secretary approached respectfully. "Ms. Jones, the vehicle is ready."

Susanna nodded. Lillian looked up at the secretary and asked, "What about him?" She meant Aaron, of course.

The secretary replied, "Mr. Abbott wanted to pick you up himself, but Mrs. Maria Abbott's condition worsened before he left. She's in emergency care right now."

Susanna's heart tightened. "Let's go to the hospital immediately."
