Chapter 539 Vivian Finally Got Her Comeuppance
Susanna shot a look at Amelia, raising an eyebrow.
Owen's years of drilling his daughter had finally paid off. Even though he always preferred sons, top-notch education never failed.
Once Amelia got through this, Vivian would lose her only leverage.
Owen gave Amelia a deep look, "Yep, I prefer daughters, and Amelia's always been top-notch."
"I really envy Owen for having such an amazing daughter."
Amelia glanced at Owen. She'd heard this a million times and always thought he meant it.
But now she saw that some folks' preference for sons was always lurking beneath the surface.
Like those two noblewomen earlier, who seemed to be dissing their sons but were actually bragging.
People who usually treated their daughters well and their sons poorly would show their true colors when it came to inheritance.
When that time came, all the property would go to the sons, and the daughters would get crumbs.
But when it came to needing care, daughters were the go-to.
Realizing all this, Amelia felt sick to her stomach.
How could parents be so heartless?
Susanna noticed it was time and chimed in, "The banquet's about to start. Let's grab some food instead of just standing here."
With that, everyone scattered.
Owen left with the elders.
Vivian, however, shot Susanna a nasty look. "This is the Velvet Sky Ballroom Hotel's banquet, not the Jones Family's. Who do you think you are, acting like the host and telling everyone to eat? So arrogant."
It had to be Susanna feeding Amelia ideas.
Otherwise, proud and aloof Amelia would have been easy to handle.
Susanna just couldn't stand to see her doing well, afraid she'd outshine her one day, so she did everything to hold her back.
Seeing Vivian's angry face, Susanna knew Amelia's sudden move had caught her off guard.
Her lips curled into a smile. "I don't need to pretend to be the host because I own the Velvet Sky Ballroom."
Vivian's eyes widened. "What? You own the Velvet Sky Ballroom Hotel? What a joke! Just because the owner is low-key, you think you can pretend to be them?"
"I don't need to explain myself to you."
Vivian sneered, "Susanna, now that I've left the Abbott Family, why are you still obsessed with me? You were an orphan before you found your family. You should get what I'm going through, right?"
Susanna looked surprised. "How could I understand your experience?"
Taking advantage of Vivian's distraction, Amelia spilled her cocktail on Vivian's dress.
Vivian shrieked, "Do you know how expensive this dress is? It's a limited edition."
"I know, but oops, my hand slipped. You don't mind, do you?"
Vivian glared at her ruined dress, fuming, "You did that on purpose! But let me tell you, even if you ruin this dress, my dad can buy me another one. You'll never stop me from getting back into the Richardson Family. This kind of move is just pathetic."
Amelia smirked, "I picked up these tricks from you. They might be low, but they get the job done. So, from now on, I'll play by your rules. Happy now?"
"Amelia, don't get too full of yourself. Once I'm back with the Richardson Family, I'll deal with you eventually."
Vivian didn't have time to keep arguing. Her dress was a mess, and she needed to change fast if she wanted to keep up appearances in front of the guests.
Today was crucial for her.
Even though she was just Owen's goddaughter for now, it was a stepping stone. She'd clear up her real identity soon enough.
After Vivian stormed off, it was just Susanna and Amelia left.
Susanna grinned, "Nice job back there. Now Vivian's stuck as just the daughter of my dad's old friend. Even if people suspect her real identity, they won't dare say it out loud. An unacknowledged illegitimate daughter isn't a threat."
In big families, this kind of thing was pretty common.
"I should've listened to you earlier. It would've saved a lot of trouble and kept my mom from getting so upset she ended up in the hospital." Amelia felt a pang of regret.
"It's not too late to turn things around, and the timing's perfect."
"I should thank Vivian. What she did made me see things clearly. These people always favor sons over daughters; they just hide it well. They talk about treating their daughters well, but when it comes to dividing the real benefits, their true colors show."
"That's true for some, but not everyone. For example, when my parents made their will, they split everything equally among us siblings."
Amelia looked envious. "Not everyone is like your parents, and not everyone has brothers who love them like yours do."
Susanna smiled, sensing it wasn't the right time to brag, so she switched topics, "The investment banquet's about to start. Let's grab some food and head over."
After grabbing a bite, they made their way to the banquet hall.
Susanna glanced up and saw Vivian coming out in a new dress. She was quick.
Amelia scoffed, "Looks like my dad's got quite a few people looking out for Vivian."
Usually, they'd have assistants bring a change of clothes, but someone like Vivian probably only had that one dress.
Amelia had dirtied Vivian's dress on purpose to get her out of the banquet, but she didn't expect her to change so fast and come back.
This could only mean Owen had arranged an assistant for Vivian.
Vivian hadn't even rejoined the Richardson Family yet, but Owen was already treating her so well. For a moment, Amelia felt completely let down and disappointed in Owen.
Vivian strutted into the banquet hall, throwing Susanna and Amelia a smug look.
Elaine walked over and cautiously asked, "Are you really Vivian?"
